Summon Night: Swordcraft was also a hopeful game for me but i heard the game was super short and the 2nd game came out almost right after it.....strange.

Maybe they just translated the second game faster than the first? Both games are pretty old in Japan from what I can see (and none released in Europe! Baaaaaah).

I heard it was old, but it uses a similar battle system as Tales of Phantasia which is almost enough for me to purchase it.  Actually it has almost everything I would want, Good battle system, Anime Inspired Art, Funny Cut scenes, Worthwhile weapons, but I dunno I can't get over the fact that Summon Night is so freaking short.

Just like I can't get over the fact Riviera and Contact have what feels like an auto battle system.  If only my friends purchased these types of games maybe they could force me to play them and change my mind...

.....too bad my friends only exist in my head and in the form of popsicle sticks with highly detailed drawn on faces....their names are Bob & Freddie.  Bob gets me....Freddie he's just one of those clingy people that u can't get rid of

I guess I'm the opposite...I loved Riviera!  But Summon Night...well, I TRIED to get into it but didn't get very far before getting bored.  I wonder if it's because of the slightly dullish colour scheme...though I know that's awfully superficial of me...  Does it get better?  If I wasn't busy with too many games I might give it another try.  I know from experience that certain games (like Mega Man: Network Transmission) start out pretty dull but get so much better after you put in a few hours.

Anyways, I'm on the fourth island...though I beat the boss of the third island, I feel as if things are unresolved.  I'm guessing I'll be revisiting past areas?

I bought 99 Keys and 99 Hamburgers (or is it Cheeseburgers?  I forget) only to find that burgers suck because they take so long to digest, which is not good in a boss battle situation when you're bashing away and requiring constant healing.  Looks like Herbs are the best bet, I should stock up on 99 of those!

Well, then nice thing about the burgers is that they give your stats a nice bonus.  I usually consume one at the start of a big fight, and then drink potions or eat herbs from then on.

If you go back to Ft Apache now that you've beaten it, there's a vendor walking around in the woods.  He's got potions - they're much better than the herbs; they digest faster and give you more HP.

Why won't you people be my friend?  I know you have the game.  You're not fooling me.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Potions, while costing more, heal more and have a short digest speed, like 5 secs or something.  Herbs heal 30 IIRC and potions heal 80 or something.

The core gameplay is basically a turn-based game in real-time...  But there's a lot of exploring involved, so it's not like your standard RPG...

Anyways, I've just found the single best sidequest in any RPG, and possibly game ever...EVER...I don't even know if I should even spoil it because it's so ****ing hilarious and awesome that I'd rather see everyone's expression when they get it...(Or you can check my gurnal for the spoiler...)

It's a fair mix.  You can sail your boat back to any of the locals you've previously visited; there's lots of hidden rooms to be found and merchants to go back to.  The combat isn't any less exciting that mashing on the A button over and over, or hitting "Attack" in a menu after each turn.  It's basically like using the "Auto" combat option that a lot of JRPG's have, where you can intervene at any time to invoke special moves or use stickers.

I just saw the ending.  Pretty messed.

Though apparently I didn't see ALL of the ending, so I'll fight the last boss again later.

Hey, have you heard about the Supercow?
After finishing the game, return to Cald~~~xa Ruins.  In the room immediately after the grassy break area with the bed and bath, on the east side are some doors.  If you unlock all but the last one, you'll be able to attack a cow (with major HP!  o_0) through the door...and it can't hit you back!  You can build up strength and other sorts of levels here very easily!

What was so messed about the ending?  I thought it was great!  The Professor betrayed Terry (though he apologizes in his little monologue thing hidden at the very end) and it ends on a really cute note between Terry and Mint...My favorite ending in a LONG time!

That's the part I didn't see...the part after the "Fin"...I guess I got impatient.

I also didn't feel anything for any of the characters in the game.  The lack of emotion in them, lack of facial close-ups, unsurety of who's speaking, etc., made it a lot less clear than it could've been.  (When Terry fondles Nadia's nighty, I'm, like, WTF?)  Then there's Mint.  I must've missed something.

I did like the climactic on-top-of-spaceship battle and the smacking of the DS screen from the underside to make it all mosaicy, but it was still kind of awkward.  Props to them for not having a generic ending, for sure.

EDIT: But I wish the end hadn't come so soon in any case...the game's so short, I never even used some of the uniforms AT ALL.  Seriously.  I'll probably play a bit more to build up some techs for them, but it's almost kinda pointless to...

I was about to make a post about how disappointingly short the game was, and then I looked on GameFAQs and noticed how many side quests I've missed, and how many more hours there are left to this game.

I figured there must be more.  There are a lot of gaps in my weapons collection and I don't even know what goes in the top row of food other than the few meat products at the beginning.

Yeah, there are copious side quests.  4 girlfriends to get, lots of little fetch quests, and so on.  Pretty nice touch, since I wasn't ready for the game to be over yet.

I'm doing the sidequests before I hit the final castle, since I needed to grind up a few levels anyway.

I hate to say it, but I sold it back to GS before I finished it.

I honestly didn't think it was a very fun game. The pop culture and internet references were funny, but I agree that the characters were all impossible to grow attached to and the gameplay was very, VERY repetitive. I actually got to the last level then gave up on it because I just wasn't having any fun and CoM was out.

So the professor double-crossed Terry? Hmm, I can't say I didn't see it coming...

It wasn't a BAD game, but there was a lot of grinding necessary.

Couple that with a very slow storyline and characters which are hard to relate to and you'll see why it was difficult to push through it.
