Super Mario 128 thread
« on: July 06, 2004, 05:57:58 PM »
Hmmm has Nintendo ever made a game that was as covered up as this one? They've given no information on this game and I've heard it was being developed shortly after SM64 can someone clarify that or correct me on this bit of info? It seems like Nintendo is so protective of their extremely innovative idea that they are not releasing any info on this game so other companies can copy them. Did this ever happen before in a Nintendo game?

I don't really see a point for a SM128 thread since we have absolutely no info on it what-so-ever...There's also the strong possibility that it will be a launch title for the Revolution, possibly making it the longest developed Ninty title yet...The only thing I can confirm is that the game has been in development since before the GC hardware was first revealed...

What do yall think their EXPLOSIVE idea could be?

I hope that there is a lot more flying in sm128. Remember the good times doing the tripple jump and guiding Mario as he flew through the air? I also hope the cape comes back and there are more secret levels to access by flying, having certain powerups, whatever.

Post here what you'd like to see or what you think is the big idea in sm128

RPGFreak: I guess the game you're referring to is DK Jungle Beat.

I hope they bring back the old items (mushroom, flower, feather but not that whole SMB3 overkill) and damage model. Oh, and of course the checkpoints, so you don't have to start all over again if you die.

Checkout "the Next Super Mario Bros." on DS.  Early footage showed enemies, such as Goombas, were fair game with power-ups, as a goomba I saw went super-sized in front of itty-bitty Mario after picking up a mushroom.

been in development before the cube huh Bill? That's amazing. I hope this game gives us that new warm fuzzy feeling that SM64 did. Give me Super Mario World gameplay in 3D and I'll be a happy little fellow. Just make this a compilation of all the previous game's gameplay. Give us the best of the best items, enemies, costumes (frog, hammer bros, etc) and launch it with Revolution (I agree with Bill, they are going to launch it with Revolution...they have to after the reaction at cube launch with Luigi's Mansion) and many many people will be happy!

Screw the suits, they're too rare and unnecessarily bloat the game. We need the traditional powerups and gameplay in the 3d iterations, though. The 3d exploration style isn't as good.

They should use pipes more in sm128. There should be a level where you just explore a whole pipe labrynth trying to find that one route that leads to the goal, with secret places having powerups or something beneficial along the way.
That would add another dimention to sm128 since their's three ways of playingn foot, underground, or in the skies.

"Hmmm has Nintendo ever made a game that was as covered up as this one?"

Luigi's Mansion.  They had to keep it super secret so that other companies wouldn't steal their innovative "no replay value" design.  It seems to have worked because no one has!

With Mario 128 I want to see a full 3D Mario game (no fixed camera angles) that isn't just a fetch-quest and feels like the classic 2D Mario games.  That's going to be hard to pull off but I think if anyone could do it it would be Nintendo.  The best way to do this would be to make levels smaller and have only one or two objectives each (ie: one regular exit and one secret one).  Instead of finding useless crap you explore the overworld to find new levels.  The Bowser stages in Mario 64 and the super hard "Secret of" stages in Mario Sunshine are a good template to work from.

As for innovation I'm a little worried about taking it too far.  Mario Sunshine tried to be innovative by giving Mario a permanent water pack and having objectives based on cleaning up paint.  It was innovative but it wasn't all that fun and didn't seem like a natural addition to the Mario formula.  It seemed like change for the sake of change which I don't like.

I think Mario Sunshine is just like any other sequel, cuz it's innovative and fun. Mario's abilites in platforming are extended with the FLUDD pack. How many times did you ever screw up a jump and use the hover nozzle? How many times did you wish you had it when you were in those secret stages? Come on now,  Sunshine's platforming has gone more complex now, and Mario had to have more abilities, so why hate the FLUDD pack? Also not every single stage required you to clean up paint as the main objective. They were all different, like collecting the 8 red coins, chasing fake Mario, whatever.  Sunshine still could have improved but I think it is a very good game.

I LOVED SMS, and think it is really underrated. It was a good change from the norm and had some real classic Mario elements in there. But SM64 also kicked ass.

SM128 better come out for GC next year, cuz if it doesn't, I am going to cry (no more systems for me) JK

I hope Nintendo spends more time on it and releases it for its next system because a new Mario game as a launch title for the Revolution or whatever it is will be wiser, to bring back the tradition. I hope Retro Studios and Nintendo will work extremely hard on their next Metroid and Zelda games for the next console.

What are HAL Labs working on right now?

I agree, that would be excellent.  The linear stages in SMS were great.  A whole game of linear levels (though with actual backgrounds grounded in earth) would be amazing.  I want it extremely difficult, clever and addictive.

As for power-ups, I want power-ups that compliment the gameplay, not ones that are different to the point where they become a mini-game (like flying in SM64 - it was fun, sure, but only to a point).  Fireballs, feathers/leaves/capes (to float, not to fly), hammers and whatever else would be fun.

I want Retro to work on a new game...particularly Raven Blade...

As for HAL, they are working on Mario Party 6 (great news for the series), Mother 3, and are also rumored to be working on the next Kirby console game...

Well Raven Blade was canned...they're doing fine and are busy enough with Metroid. But I wonder how far they were in Raven Blade when they cancelled it...Mother 3 meaning GBA right? I hope when they are done w/ MP6 they do another SSB game that's my favorite fighting game. If they do another Kirby game on a console I hope they make a fully 3D game. I would imagine it having auto targeting for the sake of hurling stuff at enemies above the ground as well. Bill do you know anything else about the upcoming Geist? If you check n-space's site there's another game in development prolly 4 the Cube it's called "Hope". There's no info on the game just a cool looking logo.

Raven Blade comes out on GameCube next month in Brazil. You can get Super Mario 128 by linking up two Nintendo 64's and starting a seven player game of Bomberman Hero.

Pardon me for being ignorant, but doesn't Hudson develop the Mario Party titles?  Did they change that for 6, and I missed it?  Just curious..

Yep, according to Nintendo's official site HAL is working on MP6...Don't complain...

And from what I remember, Raven Blade wasn't really cancelled but put on hold while Retro went through rehabilitation...

As for Geist, there's info all over the place if you look for it...

Not complaining..  Did a little digging though after viewing "great news for the series."  I missed that line before I posted.  After I posted though I did a little digging and found the official site saying that.  Then again, they also say that Hal developed MP5.  I hadn't heard that, and don't own it to be able to check, but is this true?  I would love for Hal to take over the series, but kinda doubt it, as currently the only source is nintendo.com. *everywhere else says Hudson still has it*

Are Hudson and Hal possibly related?  I hadn't heard that, but that could explain some confusion *while adding a ton more*

Luigi's Mansion, no replay value, are you insane? Luigi's Mansion is one of the most replayable games of all time, i've completed the game 8 times, just for fun, I can't say that about many other games.
