Wow. That sure is a lot more characters than we're used to in Mario Kart games.
I wonder if there will be more than eight racers at once in the new game.
There are a few characters I'm definitly glad to see. Dr Mario is my favorite character in Smash Bros and I've loved Baby Bowser since I first saw him in SMW2:YI. Getting Diddy and Dixie along with DK is also great. I think from now on, the newer Kongs will be treated as true Nintendo mascots and be included in these types of games. Rare really screwed up the Kongs during the N64 days and I'm looking forward to Nintendo restoring them to their former glory. A lot of people don't seem to like Waluigi but I personally think it's great for Luigi to have an evil twin like Mario does. Plus the guy was hilarious in Mario Tennis.
The best additions by far are the Koopa Kids though. I've been waiting forever to see them again.
The characters I'm not sure about are E Gadd who was kind of enjoyable in LM but just doesn't seem like a Mario character, the random baddies like the Goomba and Shyguy, and wasn't Plum just some stupid character created for Mario Golf? Why is she in the game? I guess maybe they just wanted another female character. There are a lot of girls who like Mario Kart afterall.

i hate to say it, but doesn't Rare own Diddy and Dixie kong? Only Donkey kong could be used in a nintendo game...

Koopa the Quick is the giant Koopa Troopa that is found in Bob-Omb Battlefield and Tiny-Huge Island in Super Mario 64.  Mario has to compete in a footrace against him.  If Koopa the Quick is in the game, I would expect him to look like the Koopa Troopa character in the SNES version of Mario Kart, with the only difference being that he would be in the same size and weight class as Bowser, Wario, Donkey Kong rather than in the Toad range.

While I hate to rain on anyone's parade, I'm almost positive that the list of characters on NintendoNow is bunk.  I'd be truly surprised if their list turned out to be anything but a fraud.

Edit:  Wesisapie -- No, to my understanding Nintendo got the rights to everything in the Donkey Kong universe -- including the stuff that Rare created.

Yeah I would have to also say that list doesn't sound just right. Including ALL the koopa kids is just something Nintendo won't do. I'm guessing around 12 characters who will be:

Mario
Luigi
Wario
Bowser
Princess
Yoshi
Koopa Troopa
Toad
Shyguy
Waluigi
Boo

That sounds more realistic to me. I don't want a gigantic cast with a bunch of low named Mario characters. I can't wait for a screen shot...I know this game is going to rock.

The idea of having to have an extra GC is well to put it nicely BullSh**. I have no problem renting a computer or two for the weekend, but rent a gamecube, ya right.

Didn't SSBM have about 25 characters?  Why is 30 so difficult to believe?

Mario Kart 64: 8 players
Mario Tennis: 16 players
SSBM: ~25 players
Mario Kart GC: 30 players?

Seems pretty reasonable to me.

Nintendo and Rare have resolved all copyright issues.
Nintendo own all of the Donkey Kong, Star Fox and other charecters derived from the nintendo franchise.
Rare own all Killer Instinct, Conker , Banjo, PD  and Rare's other original creations.

Nintendonow confirmed that both the Character List and the LAN/Online interview were both April Fool's Jokes, but not by them, by Gamecubecafe.

Remember, all that was an April Fool's Day Joke too.  We have no idea how/if LAN will be implemented.

Im not that stressed that Mario karts is confirmed to not be Online.
In fact at E3 2003 no Nintendo games will have Online components.

I am also not stress that Mario Karts will have a huge lineup of characters simular to that of Smash Brothers Melee.

I am also not stress that Mario Karts will be cel-shaded. This has not been confirmed but IMO becuase F-Zero and the NEC developed Racer have futuristic and or semi-realistic comic or futuristic realistic graphics, its common that Nintendo spreads out the art directions of games in the same genre.

Basically Mario Karts and F-Zero will offer variety. In particular for Mario Karts I would love to see some very cool smoke effects simular to that cartoon style in Wind Waker. Those spaghetti-sparks in F-Zero dont appeal to me they are distracting and ugly.

I played through F-Zero X (N64) recently after overdosing on XG3 (GCN) and they are very different games.
XG3 is quite intense while FZX is relaxing.

Wonder how much improved F-Zero GC and XG4 will be as both franchises are great and scheduled for later this year.

I know this is far from official news but it's interesting anyway.  Mario Kart finished?  With a release date of July 1st in Europe?  Probably not but hey.

Ill find a link if you want, but i cant be bothered right now...

i've seen many people comment that these new innovations might include lan capabilities, new characters, new courses, etc.  am i the only one who thinks that makes zero sense?

if the new innovation is a new character, post a screen shot that doesn't include that character.  new level?  don't post shots from that level.  customizable karts?  don't post any pics of anything but the standard kart.  etc.

if it's something that's so big nintendo can't show a single screenshot it's got to be big and it's going to affect gameplay.  my thinking is it's got to be something like a different graphical style (more real, less cartoony; or, dare i say it, cel-shaded) or a different perspective (first person instead of third).  or (unthinkable ahead) maybe they're ditching the nintendo characters theme and going with generic racers (i know it sounds horrible, but they might think these classic characters is what's giving their system a kiddie image.  just a thought.

on a slightly different note, i've been e-mailing chris morris (author of this article from cnn that was in the talkback section of the forums) and he let go this little bit of information:
Quote

George Harrison and I played F-Zero - which was pretty darn fun. Damn fast paced, but if that's your thing, you should enjoy it. And a new Mario Kart is indeed in the works - and is currently slated for a November 2003 release. Start salivating now. Expect screen shots next month.

thought everyone would like to know.  it's not official, but it's as close as you're going to get for now.

UNCONFIRMED: Nintendo's Mario Kart GameCube will not include online capabilities, instead it will have LAN support, which allows two GameCube consoles connected together using link cable. Up to 8 players can battle, by using 4 players split screen on both GameCube systems and two TV displays.

that was according to the magicbox....and really annoys me. nintendo needs to grow som bigger balls and just put some of their ish online. 1 online game is hardly focusing....that all i am asking for......

Of course im just dreaming ehehe, but still... arg E3 is only a month away, MARIO KART SCREENS WANT!

Isnt an offshoot of having LAN capability enabling it to go online ?  I thought Halo was put online, although i forget the details....
