Alright, first I want to say good job on the forum. The new logo at the top is pretty cool and the layout is excellent. But.... the color is a little bland. You should find some way to use more then a few grays and whites. (And a very rare purple)... second, there has got to be a better way to get our names to stand out! Enlarge them, let us change the colors of our names, allow size restricted signitures (to be avature size), give us all custom titles, ANYTHING! Some of the moderators need to think about this, every board has some way to recognize members of a community more then text. So, thats all I have now.

I definatly think you shouldn't return to the old one, this one looks better. But a few changes can be made, maybe not how I think, but we can find a way somehow. Anyone else have suggestions?

EDIT: Oh, and then there is that "see who's online" thing. Well, we need something quicker. We shouldn't need to go through an alphabet to find who's on, anyway to make the default "all" instead of "A"?

Is it at all possible for those who had custom forum titles on the old boards have them back?  I was given mine by Ty because of purchasing something from PGC.  Atleast with custom titles our names would stand out a little better.  What with us not having avatars and all...

Hey Rachtman! Ah, so thats how you guys got custom titles... hmm... well I have another thing. Does the messages/day work in the profile section or is it just disabled? I thought you guys didn't like that kinda stuff.

The problem is, we don't want this to become a contest, who can have the best avatar, who's got the best title, etc.  We turned all of that off on purpose.  In any message board community, the MOST important part is the conversation, the posts themselves.  Everything else serves to get in the way.  Custom titles based on post counts is part of the software, and we disabled it specifically to avoid garbage posting used to get new titles.  It's just not worth the effort.  For the record, many of those features are still enabled for moderators, so we can see your post counts, when you registered, your IP Address, etc.  It's just hidden from general view.

As for the custom titles you already had, I might consider bringing those back.  I realize that you all bought things from PGC to do that, and we do want to reward that sort of thing.  We might even do something along those lines formally in the future.  Right now, I'm just more concerned with getting the bugs worked out, and sprucing things up a bit.  Better graphics and whatnot are coming, it's just going to take a bit.  The color scheme, however, is pretty well set (and those actually are shades of purple, believe it or not).  It was a matter of improving legibility more than anything.  But maybe ... just maybe ... we'll let you guys pick your own scheme later on.

Yeah, the forums are a bit "light"... I wish there was more graphics and features.

Rick makes a great point: converstation and discussion is the most important part of the forum.

Exactly how is having an avatar, or a title a competition? I think that people use them to personalise a message more then to prove to themselves that they are better then other people. Although I do understand why you dont have colourful names (fluro green is bad for the eyes) but let us personalise our accounts more than a signature please!

Also in the profile could you please include a place to put a description of one's self.

Hehe, yeah that would be pretty cool. I was also wondering about something else, that would take a lot more effort. Is it possible for each day to have a different theme that was already put in? When its 12:00 AM, the theme could change to a MARIO theme or then the next day, be a LINK theme. I don't think its anything needed at all, but it would be cool to have changes in the forum once in a while and I think EZboard let you have the theme change on certain days. Just a cool thought. And.... like EvilMan, I don't understand this whole competition thing and I think you mean that you disabled signitures, not avatars... but well, its your decision. Of course the talking is the main part, we are just finding small improvements that could be made. We can settle fine here, if that were not the case, I wouldn't be talking here! But there isn't ANY chance for you to allow a very THIN banner in the signiture area, you can enforce rules on pic size there as well as you did on avatars, and it would look fine if you allowed it to be wide enough and not too tall to stand out. Just so we can put some pic there. I don't think this would be THAT bad on the bandwidth, considering how many would even use the signitures anyway! It isn't any competition, but I like to see who someone is right away. Just some small things, its very good that you are making new graphics too, thats a great idea.

Uh... why not YaBB or UBB somthing good. I even like EZBoard over this one. The interface of this one is just too bland and boring. It didnt have the same feeling that the EZBoard forum had. I dont think that people will move from EZBoard to this bland stuff. Also, is there a way to import old topics on to this board. I really enjoyed reading them.

No one is forcing you to use it, so if you dislike it that much, feel free to leave.  We're not using YaBB or UBB, because FuseTalk integrates VERY tightly with the website.  The forums are in BETA, and we will be updating the graphics a bit.  However, it's going to stay fairly "bland" in order to keep the speed up where it needs to be.  That's the trade-off you're making for not having 12 pop-ups launch in your face every time you click a link.

We're trying to give you guys what you've asked for while trying to keep it from crippling the site.  But we're not going to try to please everyone.  That would be impossible anyway.

This was most of my post about suggestions for the forum:

If I may add a few suggestions, they are:

1) Get some colour!!! (light and dark alternating purple for the posts would be good, since that is PGC's main colour)
2) Make the person's User Name appear larger on the screen, so if there are no avatar's, then at least something about the person stands out
3) Get some more separation between the Name area and the Post area. A black outline would work good

Rick, you said that the colours were actually shades of purple, not grey. Why don't you make it the bluish/purple shade of the Game FAQs forums? I really wish there were avatars by the name, but thank you for trying to keep the furums free from clutter. That is much appreciated. The new forums are great, it just lacks the personality of the old boards. The only personality there is right now is the quality of post you associate with the names of recognizable people like a Zach Adams and many others. All I and others are asking is that you try and incorporate as many ideas as possible, so that we can have a kick a$$ forum just like we have a kick a$$ Planet Gamecube website for news & reviews.

I definatly agree with Clonester. What I can say though is that you guys did a great job with the ads, I like how it is integrated in the page now instead of popping up over stuff. And I just noticed GameFaqs, that place does not use avatars and it works fine for some reason. Anyway, it looks good. This place could use a little more color, but other then that I guess its fine. You're right on the title up there, this is the place where your readers go to bitch about everything.

"Oh crap, we're losing the 'Win the Free X-box' ads?!" - PGC Forum Poll Option

LOL. That is funny!!!

(*sarcasm*)

That has to be my biggest gripe about these new boards. What were you thinking? No Xbox ads? C'mon guys and get your act together.

(*sarcasm*)

Posting options are easier to use, that's a plus. I didn't really know how to use all of EZboards posting options. When I tried to learn, my post got screwed up. Maybe when everyone starts using these boards and they get some more life (and we get used to them) then everything will be OK.

Please don't listen to these people that are calling for more neon colors and dancing GIFs.  The new forum is refreshingly simple and even rather elegant looking (especially compared to the tacky horror that is ezboard).  It may not be perfect, but unlike most web forums, it was apparently designed by someone with a bit of taste.

The web is full of sites that are apparently competing to see who can have the most clashing colors, the most confusingly complex layout, and the slowest load times; don't let this one become one of those.

I'd just like to say that it's about damn time you guys got your own forums.  EB is easily the worst forums system on the entire internet and frankly, i'm surprised you guys kept them for so long.

Also, all the complaints about colors, avatars, signatures, ect. are just annoying the crap out of me.  Who cares if you get some stupid picture underneith your name or some piddly title saying you've posted more then someone else? Things like that are what makes forums suck.  I much prefer the way you guys are doing things now then in the past.  You're old forums were slow, cluttered, and filled with stupidity. While the stupidity still remains thanks to certain forumers, at least it's no longer slow and cluttered.  While avatars at the very least would be nice (hell, they can be limited to 100x100 pixels and limited to being hosted off the site to keep bandwidth usage down) they dont really matter.

My only suggestion is to give hte look a little bit more depth.  Mainly in the forums logo and the buttons that say "customize" "profile"  and the formatting buttons on the message form.

When I was talking to Windy in the chat, I was surprised you guys paid for a forums system when such great systems as phpBB are available, but when I found out how well it integrates with the site I was pretty impressed.  Once I got a chance to get a better look at the layout and such I really like the setup.  Just one quick question. Is this the fuse talk's default layout with a custom color scheme, or did you do the whole thing yourselves? Either way I really like it.

Keep up the good work,
The Frozen One

PS: if you can add a spell checker please do, maybe I wont despise the forums quite so much if they looked at least half way intelligent, but then again no one uses the devil's...errr I mean gamefaq's spell checker so it probably wouldnt matter...

Frozen,

Actually WE (as in PGC) didn't pay for the forums.  I personally did, and I paid for it quite a long time ago.  I've been helping the FuseTalk guys build this product (through testing and making suggestions) for the longest time.  It started as a project for AnandTech (the hardware enthusiast site), and they got such great response, they started their own company building ColdFusion software.  I've had a license for FuseTalk since 1999, and have been buying upgrades ever since.

But yes, the main reason why we're using it is that PGC is built in ColdFusion, and having a ColdFusion forum system allows us a lot of leeway.  Having the source code for the Forums helps a lot too.  There is so much cool stuff that we're going to be able to do, you'll hardly beleive it when we start unleashing it on you guys.  In fact, it's going to make you guys wonder why you were griping about avatars and titles so much.

And that's about as much hinting about it as you're going to get from me.

There's nothing much more I want change about these forums, I love them, color and all!

Regarding the post about the graphic at the top taking you back to PGC and not the forum main page, I agree, but also understand Rick's reasoning.  I'm just throwing this out there - I'd be happy with it:

Why not do an image map or something on that graphic, and have the "Planet Gamecube" part take you back to PGC, and the "Forums" part of the graphic take you to the forums main page?  That makes sense, and it would help a ton.  I hate having to click that tiny "home" button.

Keep up the great work!!!!!!

Nice contradiction there. Who cares about avatars? Obviously YOU DO, or else you wouldn't have said they would only be nice to the very least. (Meaning the least they can be is nice, I wonder if you even know what you are saying.) Of course, I am also disappointed to hear you say that we are stupid. So much for having mature "forumers".
Now let me explain this thread to you. They are suggestions for improvements if possible!!! None are complaints. I even tried to explain that a little, even by the topic sentence, but obviously some people just have a hard time understanding.

one thing this forum reminds me of is the discus boards...we didn't have signatures(we just posted a phrase every single time...kinda a manual signature before they were called signatures...or something)<BR>At the same time its a lot like ezboards...one thing is it looks a lot cleaner. I think in this forum we will be able to increase once again our level of eliteness. The original op2000 boards were a cesspool of eliteness(hell we criticized people's spelling for god sake; you don't see that any more!), unfortunately too many people came in<BR>and flooded it with idiocy. We rarely had "fanboy attacks" in the old day where some fanboy would come on the board and wreak havoc...hell how old is the term fanboy?

Ahh, the OpN2000 days of the intelligencia. Though in retrospect it was too closed a community for its own good (leads to intellectual in-breeding when you can't bring in new blood often enough), the concept of it being a place where people HAD to step up to the plate to even register as a blip on the radar is somewhat missed. The stupidity here comes from people not being able to read.  I said "avatars would be nice but are not needed" - I'll take bannerless, popupless forums that are hosted on a site's own over some pointless avatars any day.

Frozen, did you read what I said? Yes, you only suggested it would be nice, but it is not needed for this forum to function. Well, thank you for that obvious information. However, like you, I think it would be nice also, and if there is a possibility of getting avatars, I am not going to just lazily sit down and say "Oh well." I want to find out WHY there are no avatars. You find that stupid, but lazyness will get you nowhere, buddy. You can't complain saying it would be nice and saying we are stupid for saying it would be nice as well. Thats just truly idiotic. You need to realize what you are saying before you do say it.

Once again, you fail to see my point. While they are a "nice" addition, I really couldnt give a damn about them.  These forums are already fast and work great, avatars would just slow them up again.  And while I am lazy, that is not why I dont care about avatars.  I dont care abotu avatars because I DONT CARE. They are a useless perk and I couldnt give a damn if they were here or not. 99% of people's avatars looked like pure <insert word here, stupid censors...> anyway.

One thing I would like to see is a link that you can click that shows you all the new posts since your last visit.  It's a feature that I sorely miss from the last forum I was an active poster at.  It was blended into their search function, and presented you with the link when you logged in.  It was nice because you could just browse through the pages of new posts, and post in the threads that caught your eye.

That's probably not going to happen, unless I can find a way to manage the sheer size the list would become if someone left for a month or so then came back.  It would be a fairly major database draw, unfortunately.  It would work fine in a small forum, but if this gets anywhere near as large as the last one, it would get very unweildy, VERY fast.  Sorry.

And Rick, you know that link you click to see all users online? Well, can you make it so the default list we see is "all" instead of "a"? Because I am thinking that is unecissary to go through an alphabet first.

Same reason.  While it might be handy NOW, when the forum starts getting really busy, it's going to create a huge database draw.  I mean, we're already getting between 10-20 people online at once, and that's in only four days of being in BETA.  When we shut down the other forums and kick this into high gear, it's going to be a LOT worse.

Trust me, if we're not giving you a very logical and helpful feature, it's probably in the interest of keeping the Forums moving at a decent pace.

Actually, the forum I am speaking of was very large, and got a large amount of traffic daily.  I am willing to bet more than the PGC forums.  Usually I would log in about once a day, and whenever I searched for the new posts I would get about 200 results. I know that someone recently was gone for 5 months and got something like 10,000 results.  I am not sure how much bandwidth it consumed, or how big a draw it was on the database, but it seemed to be manageable by the site.

It seems to be offline at the moment, but if you would like I can PM you with the URL.

Though possibly not the best place to talk tech for Rick, if you did want to build in such a feature you could put a cap on the records returned. Thing is, it would still be a somewhat unnecessary strain since this board at least will point you to content that has been updated, just at a high level and it makes you drill down. It's one of those things though... if you check in often enough the number of new threads to check is manageable, if you leave for too long you may as well assume just about everything is new anyway...

Never let it be said that I don't try to listen to our users.  I've set the Who's On screen to default to listing ALL users Online.  However, we reserve the right to turn this feature OFF when/if it becomes to much of a database draw.

Can you set it up so that users can decide how many Who's On users they want to look at on a page,  5, 10 per page, and so on like the number of topics, or threads on a page?  I like features like that because I find it easier and faster to display 10 instead of twenty.  It works in my e-mail and on the old forums.

TALKBACK

Can you set things up so that when readers want to discuss a news item it doesn't just go into the "Talk back" forum? I think it would be better if the threads were in the proper forums: gameboy news would go into the gameboy forum, gamecube news would go into the gamecube forum, and so forth.

Actually, you're not the first one to suggest this, but I do think it's better to have all of the news in one discussion area. - And remember not everything falls neatly into a category which makes things much more complicated when you're talking about setting up an automated system.

Thanks, Rick. Don't worry, I won't hold my breath or anything; it's not a big deal. I figured it couldn't hurt to ask (even if it's been asked before), so I asked (thinking it was just a matter of clicking a few buttons)... If a news item or article or whatever doesn't fit neatly into any one category, it could be posted to the two or three forums where it sorta fits, with only the thread in the most appropriate forum (or the one with the most activity), er, reply-able, and the threads in the other forums locked and maybe with a note/signature saying where the unlocked thread is...

Okay, that does sound like a lot of work...

Anyway, great site, don't miss those pop-ups at all.. great job all around, PGC'rs.

Interesting, I'm not begging or griping, but I bought both the E3 DVD and the PGC shirt (tucked in an extra donation too, check David Eggleton), but never received a title. All well, I suppose I didn't tell them my username, but it was never asked for.

And I do like the new forums, but I admit it's quite a bummer that I lose my ezSupporter ad-blocking functionality on these new ones.

These are easily some of the fastest and best looking forums I've ever used.  Let's keep it that way.

Yes, we don't want overtly-wasteful BMPs and badly-dithered GIFs scattered about, but come on, griping about tiny avatars (and I know PGC would keep them tiny, they wouldn't even allow graphics in a sig back on ezBoard (where the sigs are universal for all the boards someone posts on, as well as your sig preferences), and went after anyone with an avatar over... 7k, was it? There's a point when it just seems to get too picky, and I know it's not my place to dictate, which I'm not, but my opinion is that it was already getting enforced a little too much, now totally removing avatars? Avatars let people ID others at a glance. A simple graphic mnemonic so you can see, "Oh, there's Windy, there's Rick, there's Kulock", and so on. Yes, people can read, but, especially with the de-emphasized names on the left (they're just hard to see at a glance for some reason), it takes two to four times longer to find it, read it, and click who it is. Avatars can be seen out of the corner of the eye and you know who it is. But the text looks the same at a quick glance no matter who it is, and yes, sometimes it matters who is saying what (especially on the PGC forums, where saying the wrong thing to a moderator can result in an instant ban :/ ). Allowing small avatars would allow people to immediate click who's saying what as they scan down a topic, it's just far easier. It's not just a luxury.

Most forums allow you to restrict the avatar, not only the size, but the file size, so if that's an issue, like it was before, that could hopefully be prevented. Bandwidth for avatars is obviously external, and as for speed of the forums for the users, I don't think it'd make any real impact. The current layout is incredibly graphics-light as it is (to the point of sparse), anyone complaining about their download speeds would be splitting hairs and trying to squeeze life out of a 2,400 baud. I have a 26k dial-up connection (not 56k like most, 26k thanks to the lines out here), I handle far worse during the day, and the old ezBoard threads never gave me much hassle even with the avatars, I'd often open up multiple windows at once, and they'd load pretty swiftly (avatars last, but most browsers don't wait for every image to totally finish downloading before the page is properly rendered).

That's pretty much all I have issues with. I just think avatars are a necessary addition, just restrict the size and file size.

If I had one other qualm, I'd say move the "Planet GameCube" group of forums up to the top so Talkback is frequented more again (I like the news article links that now tell you how many people have replied since), but it looks the forum categories are in alphabetical order, that might be a default you'd have to fight with.

I know that people are talking about avatars just about everywhere so you've apparently missed the main reason for excluding them.  This software was not designed with off-site avatars in mind, and hosting avatars was what hogged our bandwidth and forced us to use ezBoard in the first place.  There is a chance Rick could go in and re-tool some of the code to allow externally hosted avatars, but it's not a priority since there are still a number of things we have to watch out for: bandwidth theft, file size, questionable images etc.

True, but people can be just an inappropriate with sigs or usersnames as they can with an avatar, even with a word censor in place. :/ (lewdity/cussing in a sig or username versus nudity/violence in an avatar) And due to PGC's previous rules on avatar sizes, bandwidth theft would probably not be that great of an issue, at least in the sense of the impact of the offenders. But I understand right now you have other concerns, it is merely suggestion for later on, avatars can go a long way into personalizing forum members, and frankly, making it easier to read threads. It feels like that left bar is wasted space, currently, there's barely a name and a generic title in it.

Was this forum something you guys significantly coded _yourselves_? Because most premade forum scripts offer and often default to allowing external avatars. I'm surprised FuseTalk totally lacks that functionality and would require it to be coded in...

That's about as false an assumption as one could make.  Even a small, under 20K avatar can cause a huge bandwidth problem when it's downloaded by thousands of users.  Remember, just because there's only 1100 people registered here, anyone can VIEW the forums without posting.

As for off-site avatars, I've explained that quite thoroughly now ... FuseTalk doesn't support it.  Period.  I can try to hack in something, but there is no way for me to just turn it on.  And right now, I have much larger fish to fry.

Kulock, please stop acting like we purposely went out of our way to get rid of avatars and kill everyone's fun.  The software does not support off-site avatars, and on-site avatars are simply not an option. That's really where it ends. The other things are just side issues.

Is there a way you can change the color of the name, make it larger or something?  People's eyes tend to skip over that dull black deal.  I never used an avatar in all the time I spent on the ezboard, so that doesn't bother me in the least, but some sort of emphasis over there would be nice.

Sarcasm Tag. I saw this in a sports message board. They just changed the color of the text to purple. It makes it easier to see that the poster was just kidding around.

Well Rick said on the first page that it was mainly because of competition between forum users. It seems that everyone wants some sort of visual, though, so I thought my suggestion might solve that problem.
Oh well. It was worth a try.

Edit: Well, you say bandwidth. Can't we just upload them or something? Or would that use bandwidth too?

As another feature, how about a button that will mark all forums as read?  I navigate almost entirely by links, and so it doesn't update my cookies as often as I would like.  I think that visiting the main page again should mark all posts as read...  (I think that's how it works), but since I usually just click on home...  that doesn't work for me.

I think you know the game I mean

Yes, that was a bug in our TalkBack posting that has since been fixed.

If you go back to the main Forums page, there is a button that says "Refresh".  Clicking that will mark threads as read that haven't been posted since your last login.  Hit it twice to clear everything (letting the page load fully after each click), since the first click will still show some messages as unread if they were posted since your last login.

Is it possible to get a forums where we can chose skins to use to make it look nicer?

The currently layout is a bit plain, I'd like some more colors and graphics.  (I want avatars too, but I understand fully that the forum software won't allow off-site avatars yet.)

No, there are no "skins", sorry.  The Forums pull enough bandwidth as it is.
