idea for next mario kart
« on: November 23, 2003, 04:05:18 PM »
I love mario kart double dash but i think i thought up a good idea.  You keep the good multiplayer modes and stuff but you add a story mode.  You play as mario as he goes through 4 different cups.  When you when teh race you get some items and when the cup ends you go to a platform mode(similar to mario 64).  As the races pass bowser and his freinds cook up a scheme to do some dastardly deed like steal the princes and her allies's karts and win the cup and take a hold of mushroom kingdom.  When you end each cup you use your items to defeat bowsers friends and stop his plan. HOw do you guys think of the idea?

I do want an adventure mode, but I want it more like Diddy Kong Racing, not mission-based...

Well.... instead of another Mario Kart, I would like to see a "Smash Kart", with all of the other Nintendo characters in use.

I love when these threads show up. One week after the game's release and you're already tired of it and thinking up a new one. Enjoy your games people! They don't call them "timeless classics" for nothing.

The adventure mode is a great idea.  I've found that DK Racing added a lot of really cool elements to the kart racing formula and if it didn't require so much meaningless repetition with the balloon collecting it would have been  better than Mario Kart 64.  If the next Mario Kart (ie: for the N5) had official online support, an adventure mode, and multiple vehicle types (like the karts, planes, and boats in DKR) it would have a lot more depth and the game would feel more fresh.  Sure it's stealing ideas from DKR but that's better than nothing.

One idea that would tie in platform mechanics is to have a hub world like DKR but instead of driving around it you explore it on foot like Mario 64 and you use your platforming skills to find secret race courses.

Another idea is to have a battle race mode where you race on the normal tracks but you have balloons like in battle mode and it's possible to eliminate people from the race.  That would be a good way to blend in the battle and racing modes and it would be really easy to pull off.

Oh, Ian Sane made a good point.

We could have air planes, ships, and cars, maybe even motor cycles.

Why not just make Super Race Brothers or something? Put Link in a go-kart or something =P

Okay, maybe not the best idea in the world, but look what happened to Super Smash Bros.

My biggest wish for the GC Mario Kart was that they would include all the Nintendo characters, ala Smash Brothers. That, and online. Hopefully they'll do both next time.

A Diddy Kong Racing-like Adventure mode would be very cool also I reckon, although I don't think moving the racers into planes and boats is a good idea.

Also, more tracks are needed. 16 is just too few. At the very least they should create 20 new ones and include upgrades of the 16 from Double Dash and perhaps MK64 as well.

this issue about having other nintendo characters is splitting the forum in two.  I think they should keep the characters in the mario world. having link and samus in a kart would not look right, think about it?

How about adding 50 multiplayer battle maps, good huh?

Yeah, the big problem with Double Dash is that the tracks arent all that challenging. Perhaps its just in case the LAN battles could get frantic? But either way, there were some pretty bad tracks in the game. Baby Park has to be the lamest idea for a track ever...

Am I the only one who thought Diddy Kong Racing's "Adventure" stuff was a bit tacked on and lame?  All it was was a big overworld between the tracks and while that was neat and all, it knida wore thin and I ended up playing the "Tracks" mode or whatever it was called where you just chose the track.  And the multiple craft?  If you didn't chose the plane, you were a fool.  You would be relatively untouched by the cars and hovercraft and be able to use air boost pads that they coudln't use.  Totally one-sided.

When where the tracks in a Mario Kart game ever that challenging? Baby Park is a great track, and it offers a good balance against some of the more complex tracks.

I agree with you that the whole story thing was a bit 'tacked on', but no more than any of the stories for Mario games, and that doesn't make them bad games. The boss races were a mixture of fun/frustration, and the silver coin thing added a challenge I enjoyed. It might not have been brilliant, but it was a feature that added alot to the game for me.

As for your comment about the planes, the planes were, as far as I could tell, much slower than the cars and hovercrafts. I played the game to death but rarely used the plane, opting almost always for the car. Above anything else, the variety of vehicles just added a bit of variety to the game. There were a few tracks that required you to use a certain vehicle, and each of those tracks emphasized the differences in vehicles, forcing you to learn how each one works properly. It isn't as balanced as it could be, but I still think it's a good feature that adds a bit to the game.

Just out of interest, can you remember your best time for Ancient Lake? I want to see how mine compares (it was 51:48) to others

I think you miss my point.  I don't care about story.  Story is nothing to me.  I meant the whole adventure concept for DK Racing was kinda lame.  Because at the crux of it all it was just a big overworld separating the tracks.  The Silver Coin Challenge and the Boss Races could have been implemented otherwise.   The overworld was what bothered me.

And the plane could also use the boosters on the ground... and it's affected by terrain... and the shortest distance between two places is a straight line, so... The Plane has a major advantage anywhere it's alloewed.

Opps, sorry about that.
The overworld at least had a few interesting items and secrets that could be exposed when it was explored. I agree that it was a bit thin, but I still enjoyed flying around it, just seeing what I could find. Perhaps it would be a more worthy addition if more secrets and features were added?
I still fervently disagree with you about planes, but I'll debate it later.

Here's my two cents:

Adventure mode: Eh, nah. Racing plots are usually non-existent or totally lame. I'd rather just focus on the racing.

Different vehicles: This has potential definitely, but how would it work with the existing MK items. My favourite vehicle in DKR was the hovercraft, just hooning around and doing donuts in battle was fun, so if any made it in, it deserves to be that!

More tracks: That's a given, but there has got to be a limit to it. To spout a random number is easy for you guys, but the developers have got to set limits. And with the tradition of four Mario Kart Cups (Mushroom - Special) it was always going to be 16.

Tougher tracks: Nah, the tracks weren't what makes DD hard, it was the AI. Trying to defend a lead is very tough in 150CC (and lets not comment on All Cups Tour , so why make it impossible for you?
And don't rip on Baby Park - that is one of the most challenging courses in the game. Try playing a four-player versus, and making it through the minefield of shells and bananas before you tell me that it sucks. Just because you keep turning in the same direction doesn't make it any simpler.
