Need Help with IE Favorites
« on: October 12, 2003, 08:53:01 PM »
For some reason a folder called "Links" keeps getting put in my IE favorites. I can delete it and before to long the damn thing will be back there again. So is there anything I can do to stop it from showing up.

Yea I had that too--every time I deleted it it would come back the next time. But then I switched to Mozilla and it's gone.
Sorry I couldn't help

Better question is why anyone would be using IE.  If there was ever a worse browser, it would be Netscape.  But IE is pretty close.

EDIT:  Sorry, but I just have no sympathy for people using IE.  If you have problems while running the browser, I figure you bring it on yourself.

Use Firebird: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firebird/ You can import your IE favourites, so you can fix your "Links" problem, and it doesn't have so many security holes either. And if you ever have problems with it, there is a technical help forum at the link I gave you.

I'm using Firebird 0.7 RC3, and I find it to be fantastic.  Just glad I'm not the only Firebird spokesperson around here Ocarina Blue.

I agree with Grey Ninja (?!), Firebird is awesome, i get a million popups and crashes with IE, not one with Firebird.

Well the Links folder is just put there by IE not long after it is removed. Sorry we can't help get rid of it, because that's how its designed.

Either put up with the folder, or look for an alternative. There are numerous other browsers out there which give IE a run for its money, such as Netscape/Mozilla, the standalone Mozilla Firebird, Safari, ummm, those stand out as very high quality browsers to me. Did I miss any?

I use IE and have not crashes, minor popups from time to time, but never so much a problem that made me want to waste my time downloading another browser.

nitsu, the thing is that you are using this kind of logic:

My car leaks oil, doesn't go very fast, and people are always robbing it because the locks don't work, but it does everything I want it to.  I see no reason to accept this free ferrarri that you are offering me.    It would be too much of a bother to actually drive over there and get it.

nitsu: Not only are Firebird and Opera more stable than IE, but they are also faster. In Opera, when your posting won't work you just need to press back and your text is still there. That's something I miss in every other browser out there (does firebird do that?).

Actually, rather than give you a blank screen, Firebird just gives you a message box that says "Document Contains No Data", which means that you don't even need to hit back.  You just hit Reply again.

Okay I actually had been using Firebird for quite sometime. However I was sick and tired of coming across websites that Mozilla isn't compatible with. Not only that but from my understanding it uses more memory than IE and so it was wanting to more or less crash after it had been opened for sometime.

Because of these problems I started shopping around for something that had the compatibility of IE but also had a good pop up blocker and tabbed browsing. Well I found a nifty little browser called Avant. It's basically the IE browser except it has a pop up blocker and tabbed browser. Although Avant is working great (with the exception of the "Links" problem) I do like Mozilla better but until they can fix the website compatibility issues and the memory problem I won't be using it.

Fair enough.  (for those who don't know, Firebird has a bug in which cached sites are not released from memory when the page is closed.  The memory is released when the browser is shut down, so it's not that big of a deal, but it can be problematic for people with low amounts of memory.  The bug is still being worked on, but it's very elusive.)

As far as website compatability goes, which sites were you having problems with?  I have personally only encountered 2 (one being Windows Update), but I don't surf around a whole lot to be honest.  The added features of Firebird more than makes up for the loss of a few sites in my books, and I am a little nervous around sites that only work in IE anyways, as they tend to use "features" of IE that I would rather not use, due to the security risk.  I should probably also mention that somebody actually wrote an extension to deal with such sites if you are so inclined.

Let me just sum up these guys views for Gibdo:

~ IE is the most used browser. It is widely supported and user-friendly, but this is also a two-edged sword, as there are ways IE 'takes control' of your computer, and the Links problem you suggest is one of them.

~ There are alternatives, which are just as good (or better depending on who you talk to). While these are less user-friendly, just about everything in them is customisible, right down to the source code. They allow the user to have more control over their environment. And these browsers have very good online support (documentation/forums) so there is always help if you have a problem.

I wasn't going out of the way to preach to the guy, just simplifying all the views. Pretty much all the stuff I said is fact or common knowlege, and I didn't once say Firebird

i can't belive no-one has said this, just rightclick on links, goto properties and select hidden, now provided you have hidden things set as invisible, you wont see it anymore, it will still be there, but not visable, which i guess solves your problem somewhat.

This sort of thing might depend on user/login settings. What windows are you using? Maybe you need to delete it from
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User
C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername

Finally. Thanks for the suggestions PIAC and S-U-P-E-R.

I'm using the pain in the ass known as Windows ME S-U-P-E-R. My computers 2 years old now so I am saving my money up and looking around for a new one. Anyway I don't even understand the point of the "Links" folder. It pops up in my favorites for apparently no reason and there is never anything in it. The only thing I know is that it is one of the default folders that is in your Favorites when you first use IE. I figured there would be something in Internet Options to disable it but I couldn't find anything. On the bright side since I last deleted it (when I made this topic) it hasn't shown up again. Maybe this time it's gone for good. Doubt it though.

I can do that with IE.  I could try and post and it would come up saying page couldn't be found, I just back up and my text I had just typed would still be there, nothing ever disappeared.

I have never had a problem with IE like ya'll are talking about.  It doesn't crash on me, it is stable for me, runs pretty fast.  I am on dial-up, so speed is meaningless to me really.

A Dodge Neon is pretty fast too, but what am I comparing it to?  And if you try to tell me the locks work on your browser, I'll tell you you are out of your mind.

It would be a good thing to have.  Running Firebird just assures you that if you visit a website with a malicious script, it can't reformat your hard drive or anything.  It doesn't stop people from busting into your computer through other means.
