Nintendo fans reach 'cult' status
« on: September 20, 2003, 07:45:40 AM »
It appears to me that the hardcore Nintendo fans, me included, almost enjoy the against all odds position since the N64.  Other fans come and go, but we go down with the ship.  ...in pop cultures eyes, that is.  This doesn't mean you only own Nintendo systems, but it means you have a strong connection to everything Nintendo.  You go to EB, and ask for Madden 2004, and they hand you the PS2 version, and you get agitated.  You see kids in Gamestop saying "Nintendo games look so ghey", and you want to ring their neck, as you see them holding DOA:XVB.   You look at Nintendo as the unsung heroes of gaming, and you are a card carrying member of their 'group'.  You buy other systems, enjoy them even, though part of your mind is telling you,' this is wrong.'  You love that Nintendo comes out with games like Cubivore, Pikmin, and Animal Crossing.  You love being the only person in your group of friends who owns the GC.  Its the underdog status, i guess.  This all comes up because my friends wouldn't play my Madden 2004 because it was on the GC and the controller was 'ghey'.  They say intelligent things like, 'Arent they out of business?'  and 'did you know that Nintendo tried to steal the Playstation name?'  In closing, embrace your misfit status, it sets you apart from the flock.

Bottoms up!!!

The problem started with when Sony entered the market.  They took what Ninty had set up, jumbled it all around, and made videogaming a part of pop culture.  It makes me sick that videogaming is on the decline with more and more developers shipping out crap to catch the casual gamer's eye.  I agree with you completely...The Nintendo gamer is becoming more and more rare as more casual gamers enter the market screaming for more violence and sex that is already ruling the movie industry.  I can't help but feel that another videogame crash looms over the horizon...Maybe then people will realize that videogaming is an art, not a way to control the violence and sex appeal they see on tv </rant>

well yes, im part of the nintendo cult,  and i dare say i allways will be, its like the music industry, nintendo is the better music that is apreciated by only a select few, ps2 is the big boyband on the scene that everyone loves, and xbawx is like the new shocking metal band thats out there to prove WE ARE HARDCORE. thats how i see it

funny story, went to EB yesterday to get FFTA, and while i was there i was annoyed by no fewer than 5-6 kids saying things like 'nintendo sucks' 'nintendo is for kids' and yet there was me and a few other people around 17-25 looking at the cube games on display, yeah nintendo is for kids allright

Honestly, Kansas must have a plethora of Nintendo fans- I find people all over my school that share my fanatical devotion to Nintendo. The only people that I ever hear bashing them are my friends and only do it to piss me off (which it does ). I see people checking out Gamecube games everywhere. Only a few days ago I had to wait in line to play the Rebel Strike demo my Wal-Mart just got. This kid kept playing and wouldn't give it up- I eventually had to leave because I was waiting too long.

Anyway, I completely agree with you, Omen. Being a Nintendo fan is one of the few absolutes in my life, but it's definitely one of the strongest. And I think that holds true for just about every Nintendo fan, as well. "Devotion" doesn't even really begin to describe how most of us feel about Nintendo. Sure they have their faults,  they've made a few bad business decisions in the past, and will do so in the future as well (there's no such thing as a perfect company), but what they bring to the table far outweighs what they take away and while this may sound more like wishful thinking than a factual statement, I think Nintendo's here to stay. This is but a down in a glorious and illustrious history of Nintendo that's only just started.

Can you guys believe AgentSeven actually said I hated Nintendo?

I love you guys.    I am really speechless right now.  That doesn't often happen to me, as I will usually have SOMETHING to say, but I really don't.  It's just that I don't often feel that I fit in with any group of people these days, and all 5 people who posted in this thread today have said exactly what's on my mind, and in my heart.

I hate it when a child has the balls to tell me something is kiddy.  I try to tell them that kiddy games are inmature games aimed at people with inmature minds.  Inteligent older people play good games while the kids follow fads.  I'll play through Mario Kart on every Nintendo system before I'll play through Gran Turismo even once.

That is one seriously cool room, PIAC.  Gotta love those posters.

Anyway, I too have to agree with the thread.  It's way too often I see some 12 year olds saying Nintendo games are "kiddy" but others older than them (including me) picking out a game to buy.  Who starts these stereotypes anyway?  But I would pick my Cube over any other system any day of the week.

Funny you said that.  This exact thing happened to me today at Gamestop.  The thing was, we had been talking about Nintendo and the guy KNEW I was a GameCube gamer, yet when I asked him about an upcoming game, he asks "for the PS2"?  Was he not listening??  Very frustrating.  One of these days I think I'm going to have a stroke because of the stress this so-called "console war" has caused me.

Jeez you guys are great. . . I agree completely with everything said thus far.  I live by Nintendo, and I will die by Nintendo.  Long live Mario!

I know of no real GC haters around here. . . my own friend owns one (and a PS2) and all of my friends play it and love it, even the Xbox guy.  I've never gotten into any kind of argument with anyone about consoles, either.  Ah, and one time at Sams some dudes were playing the Gamecube. . . little kids fighting over the controllers, some teen playing WW, another guy play some RPG.  Brought tears to my eyes.

I love being a Nintendo fan, and no matter what anyone says about them, i will defend Nintendo, i will defend what is right! I am happy having a console that many idiots look down upon, if they dont like it it's their loss, not mine. I dont care what anyone thinks about the GameCube or Nintendo, i dont let anyone change my opinion, i am happy with Nintendo, and the fact that i know im getting a better gaming experience than most people.

I have 17 games for my Nintendo GameCube, thats more games than i have had for any other console, ever. I see many, many, many high quality games coming out in the future for our my purple little cube, and F-Zero GX, Soul Calibur 2, Viewtiful Joe, Mario Kart, Billy Hatcher, Rebel Strike, Pikmin 2, Animal Crossing, Mario Party 5, Mario Tennis, Starfox 2, Metroid Prime 2, Wario Ware, Pokemon Colosseum, Pokemon Channel, Resident Evil 4, Killer 7, Tales of Symphonia, Baton Kaitos, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Zelda: Four Swords, Zelda: Tetra's Trackers, another Zelda, Mario 128 are just a handful of them. Nintendo, i am one freaking happy customer. I can think of... two exclusive PS2 games that im interested in and... one Xbox game. And dont get me started on the GBA, what an awesome little thing that is, i have about 11 GBA games and heaps more that i plan on getting when i get enough cash. I love my GBA. I love my GameCube. Ever since i got my GameCube at 9am on launch day, i have loved it.

Nintendo fans, take a stand! If anyone is dissing Nintendo, set them straight!

Nintendo for life!

Yea I can relate to this. Gamecube is no longer "cool" to most people. I was at gamestop looking at games, when I saw 2 10 year old kids looking at Xbox games. One of them said Xbox is the best, and that Outlaw Volleyball was the best game ever. I had to resist the urge to kill him. Also one of my friends was looking at Super Mario Sunshine and said "don't you just clean stuff up in this game?" Things like this piss me off. But I love my GCN and wouldnt trade it for any other console. Except maybe the N5 .

Omen, you get my vote for Post Of The Year!

I remember countless times when my sister's "cool", "thug" friends would badmouth the Cube.  They saw me play Mario64 and thought it was a GCN game!

As we all know, "Mainstream gamers" believe games like Smash Bros, Zelda, and Viewtiful Joe are, dare I say, "Kiddie" and consider Tomb Raider, GTA, Max Payne, and The Getaway to be greatest thing since sliced bread. This is a joke.

I certainly hope Viewtiful Joe wins Game Of the Year.  As Bill said, Something like this could show the mainstreamers that "Videogaming is an art, not a way to control the violence and sex appeal they see on tv"

I find that my love for NIntendo is just in my mind, cause i have neither the money nor the time, nor the energy to keep up the act. But not that it matters, cause i at least love Nintendo.

I just haven't been bothered lately. Uni is just tiring me out.

Just wait till I get a job in the future. I'll review my attitude to Nintendo Fanboyism then

Our love for nintendo is whats goin to keep nintendo aflloat during the next gaming crash.  When that happens, all the casual gamers will drop their ps4 or sos and xbox 3 and whatnot like a cold since they have no true sence of loyalty, it'll just be one big fad for them, a trend to drop and move on from.  We'll still be here though, playin our nintendo games, supporting and watchin nintendo rebuild the industry all over again lol.

Awsome post!

You know I agree with just about everything I've read here, as I can relate. I've been a huge Nintendo fan ever since my wife bought me the Nes for christmas years ago. I have EVERY system that nintendo has made. Yes even Virtual Boy. And I will be in line on launch day to pick up my N5 and a couple games. I'm curious, how old are you guys? I'm 39. I have a feeling there are no youngn's in this post. Common sense comes with age. Give the rookies time and they will see the error of their ways.

I turned 22 a couple of months ago TOY.    I've been around since I got my NES back in 1990 for Christmas.  I started out late, but I made up for it by getting all Nintendo consoles from NES - GCN, and no others.  (except a GBA, and a nice PC)

Hmmm... Heaven forbid there be another gamecrash; that's the last thing we need. Oh, PIAC, that's one pimpin' room you got there, all it needs is a fridge and a bathroom and you have little need to see the light of day...

I think we're simply suffering a generation gap here. Back in our day, there was a good chance that Nintendo was the first console we ever saw. (Lest you go back to the Atari days, my question for you is how did you get hooked to Nintendo?) I'm going on a limb and say Nintendo single handedly saved the video game industry back in the day; its a damn shame a worthy rival like Sega isn't around to balance it in this day and age. (Though their collaberations today are merely a hint of what these companies can do together, I can see them making the next AAA must-have title if things work out right.) These kids today have so much to choose from, even PC games which back in 85 were simply nothing more than text based games that appealed only to the geekest of the geeks. Back then, it was all about the games; our minds were not filled with how boobies make games 'cool', beating Super Mario Bros w/o using warp pipes was.

Unfortunaltely, those days have vanished; forever ingrained in our minds, but will probably never be repeated. Society has now an age of where children are capricious, and are pushed to grow up faster. Kids in their preteens now have cell phones, and young girls are dressing sluttier, but that's getting off topic. The point is that I believe kids are a little trendier, and that 'kiddie' Nintendo isn't 'it.' I can only hope that there will be enough members of the Nintendo army to keep it afloat in tough times. With out it, many publishers will be content to get their piece and be out, leaving no legacy behind.

Thanks for listening; my bed is calling me. (Or is that SC2?..)

My dad says trampolines are for kids. Pah, that's why it's an olympic sport, right?

Honestly, saying XY is for kids is definitely the dumbest thing anyone can say. It's usually just to dis something you have no real arguments against. I guess the average kid just needs something to patch its ego.

If you hear someone claiming N is for kids laugh at them in the most humiliating way you can. That is VERY effective in shutting up idiots.
