So, there's three modes: one board game (as mentioned), a randomizer (just plays a game a random), and then you can just pick one.

Thanks for writing your impressions. I think I might pick this up on the cheap somewhere down the line once I get a Switch. Bomberman R would be a priority first, but after that I think I'd try to pick up 1-2 Switch. Kind of a shame it wasn't a pack-in; Nintendo Land discs went for dirt cheap pretty soon after those consoles' releases.

Question: does the board game mode look/play something like Mario Party/Wii Party U? Or maybe more along the lines of Smash Board in the latest Smash Bros game? I like the idea of having the outcome of several minigames add up into the broader encompassing boardgame.

After digging around, I finally found where someone posted a gameplay video  that gives a better explanation of Team Battle.  This should answer your questions.  Maybe that should've been the official thread, lol. Sorry, Azeke.

After watching Giant Bomb preview video about the game i realized that "1-2 Switch" game encapsulates the merge of Nintendo SPD (WarioWare, Rhythm Heaven, Tomodachi) and Nintendo EAD groups.

Also -- you've been lied to.

Main mode of 1-2 Switch is not minigames. The main mode is Team Battle which a board party game like Mario Party.

Structure of the each mini-game is like this: you pick a game, they you are shown a video that explains how to play and then you play it. Well that's pretty much copied from SPD's Rhythm Heaven.

But the bigger structure is that of a party game with two teams taking turns moving their pieces on a board, a-la Mario Party or Wii Party.

It's a tech demo not a game.

I don't feel those terms are mutually exclusive.  Wii Sports and Nintendoland were both tech demos.  I wouldn't say they weren't games as well.  I also wouldn't use "tech demo" to be derogatory or dismissive of a title either.

I was looking at some reviews for this game, and I must say, critics seem unjustly harsh on this title.

So many of the reviews talk about the price, saying it should've been a pack-in or "$20 max".  Personally, I think price is more of a consumer's choice and shouldn't weigh down the review, but I can see where $50 may be a little high for it (even though that's already the budget price).  I would've said $40 is more of the sweet spot.  $20 is insulting.

A few reviews bring up Zelda as a comparison, as if you'd be playing Zelda and 1-2, Switch in the same context.  I'm also not really sure what people are talking about regarding depth and replay-ability.  I get that there's not highscores to go for and there's no point in "mastering" the minigames, but they're minigames.  They don't need to have that much depth, unlike Wario Ware and Rhythm Heaven where you play mostly play solo.  And I think they're fun enough to want to break out around a group friends at least a few times.  This just isn't a 1 player game, plain and simple.

when 1 2 Switch is a bargain bin title I'll bet they'll sure be changing their tune. The price for this title is likely to drop.

It's interesting to watch zeitgeist think develop.

When Duke Nukem 64 came out people thought it was old with dated graphics. But really the original had only came out the previous year and everyone thought it was amazing when it came out. It's amazing how everyone turns into a horde  of opinion zombies so easily.

I played some of 1-2-Switch today. I liked the minigame with the balls in the box and the safe opening one. For what it is, I think the game should be way cheaper. It really should have been packed in with the system.

I think eventually it will be packed in...or perhaps the original plan was to pack it in...but Nintendo felt either A) there was enough value to make it a full game.  B) They changed their mind because a lot of money was spent developing and creating the game and selling it helps balance the cost of development.  C) Nintendo needed another game to sell at launch and thought this is the only game ready.

It is honestly probably a combination of many of those...a packed in game could have been nice for the system...and I hope Nintendo does it for the Christmas packaging, but I think some early adopters will be upset about it.

I have just been playing Nintendo Land for the first time in almost exactly three years. It is so much better than 1-2-Switch. I really dont know how Nintendo think they can charge so much for 1-2-Switch. As a minigame collection, its pretty terrible compared to Nintendo Land.

I may have to give Nintendoland another go.  I don't remember liking it that much.  I'm sure the games have more depth.

I've still yet to get around to Nintendo Land myself. It's still wrapped in its plastic. I've been curious to play it but have always had other things I want to get into. I will say this about Breath of the Wild. It's got me excited to just dive into all the Wii U games I still need to play including Nintendo Land. Gaming!!!!!

Nintendo Land is one of the best local multiplayer games I've ever played. I wish I had more opportunities to play it with 4 or 5 people.
