Not too long ago at a press conference, they didn't turn on the system once...They didn't even show the OS...I think that proves it right there...

Hm, I'm still wondering whether it is (A) A scam or (B) a money laundering operation.

I was skeptical about broadband being the future too until I heard of this interesting technology being tested. It will get broadband to homes by using zepplins to transmit broadand to a wide area on the ground. It is being tested and it is believed that not only will it allow broadband to get to new areas, but it will also make broadband cheaper to own and easier for the companies to maintain. (A few dozen zepplins are easier to maintain than 100s of mile of wires and gizmos.)

I'm not saying that I support the Phantom. I've always believed it was a fake, and this recent interview proves it.

A zepplin?  If this fails the irony of this will be too great for me.

A dozen zepplins in the long run are no where near as cost efficient or workable as cabling.  The fiber that is already layed has been in use since the 90s and costs very very little in maintenance.  Where as a zepplin, you are paying for fuel, for maintenance, countless things, and it does add up over time.

As for microsoft not understanding bandwith, rather ironic considering comcast has been fining and banning people for 'using too much bandwith'

HardOCP posted an article about Infinium Labs a while ago. In the article the CEO admits that Infinium Labs doesn't have any offices yet, even though the company claims to have offices all over the place on the company website.  After reading th article I believe that this isn't just another hoax, it is a scam.

Zepplins? *pictures Hindenberg disaster*

Do you have a link of some sort Oldskool? Its just that cabling, while initially expensive with the laying of cables underground, is more cost-efficient in the long run, because there is no on-going cost apart from occasional maintenance. There are definitely alternatives, but for large-scale networks nothing comes close to good old cables. The plan you discuss sounds very ambitious, partly because I've never even thought of it. Ah well.

And I believe the Phantom console to be just that - a phantom console. It indeed smells of a scam, and I don't expect to see any games running on this console at all.

After reading that article, I have concluded that Tim Roberts is a scamming dick, but since when DIDN'T we know that

I believe the Phantom WILL come out, but when people buy it, they will discover that the console is just the Xbox with cover stickers on it.

After 5 months of speculation, we still can't leave it alone. Here's another tidbit courtesy of Gamespot:

"Infinium Labs and Venturcom have today announced that Microsoft Licensing GP has approved an agreement allowing Infinium Labs to use Windows XP Embedded for operating system components of its Phantom Game System. Venturcom is an authorized distributor of Microsoft operating systems for use in embedded systems, and will provide developer support as well as the Windows XP Embedded licenses to Infinium Labs"

Strange isn't it? MS is indirectly helping this Phantom by giving it a soul. Oh when will the jig be up? How long will this masquerade continue? It just sounds like a dedicated gaming PC with Broadband being its selling point. If they marketed it like Alienware of something, maybe it could be taken seriously. As a console? Nah....

Somehow, we're addicted to the drama. Oh what will they do next?

Phantom to be Unveiled at CES
Quote

Infinium Labs announced today that its Phantom Gaming Service will be unveiled to the public January 8-11 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada.

looks like we should have some more information on the phantom by tomorrow or friday.  i'm really interested to see what people have to say.  it appears to be nothing more than a pc with a controller.  but i kinda wish i'm wrong on that one.

It was supposed to have been "unveiled" at just about every trade show since it's "introduction"...I sort of doubt it will be "unveiled" here either...

The Phantom is going to get a competitor, VIA, Apex and Deltachrome are introducing a games console at the CES which is also based on pc-technology. The main advantage of VIA's machine is that it will play any pc game. I expect more from this effort than from the Phantom because VIA is an established name within the computer industry.

whoa, if THAT'S true, then wont it need a keyboard and mouse instead of a controller? And in that case, isn't it just a pc without windows? Or will it have windows? And a desktop? And internet?

Hey, I already have this console!! I just plug my computer into my tv with an s-video cable and voila!

No, seriously though, that actualy sounds interesting to me. Hmmm....any computer game?

All PConsoles run on Windows. And I bet none of them will succeed.
The Phantom ws shown at the CES, but still no tech demo. Could have been just an empty shell.

I was expecting quite a lot from VIA's ApeXtreme, but now I have seen the specs, I have changed my mind. It will have a 1.4 Ghz C3 processor and have a DeltaChrome videochip that is about as fast as an ATI Radeon 9600. The X-Box Next and GameCube II will both have a videochip that is supposed to be faster than anything on the market right now. The ApeXtreme will only be suitable for current and old games, and some future games, but don't expect to be able to play the latest PC titles on it in a year or two, the specs of the machine will be completely outdated.

EDIT: The ApeXtreme is going to get it's own games as well, one of which is a straight port of the N64-/PC-game Rogue Squadron. In other words: the system is most likely already outdated as it is.

And it looks like the Phantom is going to go in the same direction as the ApeXtreme, as the "exclusive games" the Phantom is going to get are all going to be direct ports of budget pc titles like Lemonade Tycoon and I Spy Junior. Games I have never even heard of until a minute ago.

The Phantom has inspired my brother and I to make our own console; we're hoping to unveil it within the next few weeks... and please, don't let the duct-tape and cardboard fool you!

Honestly, I never put much effort into the Phantom; I figured it was either a hoax or a horrible idea destined to fail.  Even if it's real and sells for $200 I'm still not interested; for that I could buy four new games I actually want to play on a system I know actually exists.  Reading through this thread is the most I've read about the Phantom... I've found bits and pieces here and there, but I don't see how anyone can still have faith that this isn't a hoax or fraud (as I said, I'm not interested enough to learn more about it).

hahaha good one.  I dont know why everyone thinks this is a hoax i remember reading some news site where they even bought a license for windows, they are teamed up with other companies.  I doubt someone would pour that much money into a hoax.  If it does turn out to be a hoax it will be one of the biggest and most known online hoax's ever made.  I feel its more likely to be real but never reach the production line.  I think the whole basis behind it really does have potential though.

Perhaps it is that the guy who is doing this has a history of spending outrageous ammounts of money, only for the company to fail, the office that this place is supposed to be in is COMPLETELY empty, and everyone involved in the company is related to his family.

I wonder if anyone has thought of this yet, bankruptcy fraud.  Think about it, he gets a mass debt on video chips, mother board, cpu's, electronics loads of stuff.  Then it fails purposely and files for bankrupcty.  All of the debts gone and he still has his stuff.  Well that is one scenario or the government could repo everything he got at the same time but i dont think that happens as often as the gov just paying it off.  Either way hes gonna get somthing out of it.

Actually, Infinium Labs doesn't have offices yet, they have even acknowledged that fact. Though they claim to have offices all over the USA on their site. The whole company is being run out of that guy's home. Theyt don't even ave production facilities yet!  Because of this, I am starting to think that they don't even have a working prototype yet.
