I'm not sure how relevant this is to the discussion, but before Square abandoned Nintendo during the N64 era there were rumors (maybe more than that) of there going to be a Super Mario RPG game on the N64.

I'm not sure how relevant this is to the discussion, but before Square abandoned Nintendo during the N64 era there were rumors (maybe more than that) of there going to be a Super Mario RPG game on the N64.

It was more than just a rumor, but Super Mario RPG 2 for the N64 was renamed before release to *drum roll*: Paper Mario. Wise choice, since the games are totally different from one another besides having stat elements.

Here are some more story ideas:
 
Geno returns, but because the star shards have fallen into the Smithy Gang's hands he is quickly dying. Once Mario recaptures a star shard and reenergizes him back to life. Geno basically used the last of his energy to turn Mario and his team back into their normal selves from being turned into nuts and bolts by Smithy's wishing power.
 
Toad would be in the game as a playable character and owns his very own zeplin shaped like a mushroom. This becomes Mario's airship for the rest of the game. This ship would be destroyed in the final battle, but Geno has it restored via star power as a gesture of thanks for defeating Smithy again.

I definitely concur.  If Mario & Luigi is going to be basically the defacto Super Mario RPG, I want it to move up to being a Wii franchise.
 
As for Fawful, I really enjoyed him in the first Mario & Luigi game.  His cameo in the second game was amusing in its understated way, but it wasn't anything special.  I never played the third game, so I don't know how badly Nintendo overused him there.  I would like more new villains in the next Mario RPG, though.  The really cool thing about the first Mario & Luigi game (and, for that matter, Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door) was that the villain wasn't Bowser but a completely new character.

Well, Paper Mario is moving to the 3DS, so maybe there is a higher chance now that the series will switch places.

How does humor better fit on a handheld versus a console? Is the humor pint-sized and so it fits better on a handheld?

It's hard to explain, the series just has this feel to it that feels more comfortable on handhelds. I think Nintendo (or whatever second/third party they contract) could do a good job with a console version though.

How is any game better on a handheld than a home system when home systems are much more capable hardware-wise than handhelds? I've certainly never played any handheld game which I felt provided an experience that didn't make me think "This would've been so much better on a television system."

Even taking out things that work better with the DS's touch screen than they ever could on a console, there are lots of games I'd much rather play on a handheld than a console. Most puzzle games and RPGs are like that for me.

I haven't seen the touch screen used in a way which couldn't be done with the Wii pointer.

Is it just because you like to take those games with you when you travel, or is there some other reason?

Something like Picross couldn't be done nearly as well with the pointer as it is with the DS touch screen.

The portability of it is nice, but I spend most of my time with the DS sitting in the same exact place I play my consoles in. I don't know what it is, I just usually prefer to play those games on handhelds. There are other genres, like first-person shooters and sports games, that I'd rather play on a console, and then things like platformers that I like either way.

If a sequel to SMBRPG ever did come about, here is a list of the playable characters and what I think their job class(es) should be:
 
Mario: Knight/paladin
Luigi: Monk(?)
Yoshi: Blue Mage(gains abilities by eating his foes)
Peach: White Mage
Mallow: Black Mage and Geomancer
Bowser: Dragoon and Warrior
Geno: Gunner and Ranger
Toad: Gambler, thief and bard

I had the idea of that the Queen of th Smithy Gang, Smithete, would be similar to an insect queen in her role for the gang. Basically when Mario and his group go to battle her in Smithy's home dimension, she turns into a giant mechanical insect with an ovipastor that produces machine mades to fight Mario.

That's a great idea, but there's one small flaw: why would Smithy impregnate a giant mechanical insect?

They wouldn't reproduce like living organisms because they are machines. However, Queen Smithete would basically be the factory that produces Smithy's machine army. The insect part was just a creative introduction to the machine mades.
 
Also, her initial form would be a hunoid form similar to that of Smithy, but with female proportions. When Mario confronts her, she transforms into her true form, which is a giant robotic ant/spider/bee/mantis thing. Her oviposter would be a breeding factory for the machines of the series.
 
After a rematch with the Mario and his group, the Axem rangers return to the Blade airship where they proceed to transform it into a megazord like robot to confront Mario. Mario defeats the Blade mechbot and it lays in ruin in the Mushroom Kingdom.
 
Smithy would be the final boss of the game and would be fought in three consecutive battles. The first battle would just have Mario facing the normal Smithy. The second battle, however, starts out with the defeated Smithy gaining star power and boosting his strength to use against Mario. The third and final battle would have Smithy merging with the remains of the Blade airship and becoming a giant mech on his own.

How would the game play? It is simple. The game would be be in full 3D like Final Fantasy 10 or 12. It would be turn based, of course, and the battles would engage when the character touches the enemies on the screen.
 
Once the battle starts, the player has the choice between attack, items, skills, escape and some others. The rest of the battle playes out like a turn based game and since this series is part Final Fantasy, an ATB gauge would be present, too.
 
The skill system of this game would be similar to the first, except that some skills can be combined together to form super attacks similar to Chrono Trigger.
 
As Mario and his group defeat enemies, they gain mushroom points, which are like a currency that buys skills, weapons, accessories on a board similar to that of the one found in Final Fantasy 12.
 
The biggest question I have is with this being Nintendo would Mario be allowed to carry a sword? The answer to this would be to have use wrneches that are sort of like a sword in the game, but not enough to give a violent impression of the character. Bowser, on the other hand, would uses chain chomp mases, spears, and cannons that fire bullet bills.
