BOOOOOOM-SHAKA-LAKA! EA ANNOUNCES NBA JAM
New Take on Classic Game to Appear on the Wii in 2010
GUILDFORD, UK,. – 11th Jan, 2010 – Electronic Arts Inc. (Nasdaq: ERTS) announced today that EA SPORTS™ is developing one of the most popular and culturally influential arcade basketball games ever made -- NBA JAM -- for the Nintendo Wii™. EA SPORTS NBA JAM revives the classic franchise with vintage NBA JAM gameplay, and all-new features that deliver a fresh new take on the game. Featuring the sights and sounds that fans of the franchise will instantly recognize, EA SPORTS NBA JAM mixes the old school with the new, to deliver a one-of-a-kind sports presentation on the Wii.

“NBA JAM is one of the most recognizable franchises in videogame history,” said Peter Moore, President, EA SPORTS. “Diehard fans of the original game have been asking for a remake for more than a decade. We’re very excited to give them their wish this year with the return of this iconic franchise.”

Featuring gameplay that is true to the original, NBA JAM will have players spinning with ankle breaking moves to the basket and on the way to high-flying, backboard-smashing dunks. In addition to the classic experience, EA SPORTS NBA JAM will also introduce new game modes, characters and gameplay depth.

NBA JAM brought an all-new visual style to the sports videogame genre when it debuted in 1993. Now, the new EA SPORTS NBA JAM re-defines the visuals for a sports game yet again by bringing true-to-life body types, updated physics, and visible player emotion to the over- the - top experience.

EA SPORTS NBA JAM is currently in development at EA Canada in Vancouver, BC and will be available for the Nintendo Wii videogame system in 2010. The game has not yet been rated by the ESRB or PEGI.

I hope they plan on going with the 3 players per team design of the later NBA Showtime and work on adding some amount of gameplay depth, because even though Jam was fun in its day it was really simple.  Most of the game just consisted on hammering on the steal or jump button on defense and dunk after dunk on offense.  Also, for this kind of game online play is really a must, especially if it's going to be a retail title.  I'm also hoping they're using the current NBA roster, much as I'd like to see Stockton and Malone back "on the court."

I'm hoping for lots and lots of secret player.

Stockton, Malone, Jordan, Bird, Magic, Kareem, Barack, Biden, H. Clinton, B. Clinton, Lil Wayne, Eminem, Sarah Palin, John McCain, Michael Jackson, a freakin monkey, team mascots, Miis, Mario, Luigi & Princess Peach, your mom, my mom, everybody.

all accessible (for free) with secret codes.

All the secrets of the past need to work in the game of tomorrow.
All Fire mode, super steal, unlimited turbo, BIG HEAD, everything needs to be there and more.

EA needs to go all out on this and it's a guaranteed seller as long as they don't mess with the formula and fun factor of the game itself.

I'm glad this is a Wii exclusive. But then again, there remains a strong possibility it will be ported to other platforms at some point. The original was multiplatform so it would make sense.

Eh. When NBA Jam was around, the basketball game for me was Tecmo Super NBA Basketball. But I've told a co-worker or two about this & they were psyched about it.

Mission...complete?

The screenshot looks like it's from South Park. All of these NBA players must be Canadian.

I hope this turns out better than the 2004 remake. That one basically ruined all of my memories from back in the day.

On the offical site you can vote on which 3 players you want on a team in the game. This week it is the Kings,Clippers, and the Thunder.
Maxi is dead. I killed him and took his posts and changed genders.

Honestly all I would want from an NBA Jam would be the exact same classic game complete with digitalized sprites and everything only with an expanded roster that includes all the all-time greats.  So I want to play as the Celtics with Bird and Russell.  And the Bulls with Jordan.  And put Wilt and Shaq on the same Lakers team!  That would be cool!  This is how I would like it with most sports games actually.  I usually find a "engine" I like and want to just be able to use whatever players I want with it.

The real appeal of NBA Jam was that it was just the bare essentials of basketball.  That's the appeal of any arcade-style sports game.  As a result these sort of games don't lend themselves well to sequels.  With sequels you build on what was there before but in this case addition would be subtraction.

NBA Jam was always just a name anyway.  The real franchise was Midway's arcade sports games.  They also made NFL Blitz and NHL Hitz.  Midway lost the NBA Jam name to Acclaim and thus made NBA Hangtime instead which is very obviously a direct sequel.  EA just putting the name on the box doesn't make this NBA Jam.  The name itself is worthless.

It's not just a name, it a recreation of a classic.

Since a different developer is working on this game, I hope they go and play the original if they haven't already. Hopefully, they can analyze the game, and hopefully figure out exactly what it was about it which made it such a beloved classic.

I see that, but that's one person. One person cannot create a game, and it can turn out entirely differently than previous efforts. See: Super Smash Brothers Brawl.

They tried to do too much with SSBB.

NBA Street is not much different from NBA JAM.
With Mark Trumell on board, they can make NBA JAM what NBA STREET was trying to be.... NBA JAM.

I haven't played NBA Street so I can't really comment on that.

Like I said, I have hope, but can you really blame me for having some skepticism of a third-party Wii game?

No. not really.

But I refuse to let go of hope on this one.
If the pic up above is any indication of what the game looks like then they are already on the right track. If they can take the NBA Street and boil it down to NBA JAM complete with all the secret characters, codes, and arcade style play with he help of the original creator then add in some online competitive play, they should have a guaranteed winner on their hands.

& with buying the name to the game, I'm hoping they bought the code and all the previous version of the game to go with it.

That gives it potential then.  Unless he's one of those dellusion creators that's all "this is what I REALLY wanted to make" and NBA Jam was just a happy accident because he lacked the money or technology to implement shitty ideas.  You know, the George Lucas scenario.

Can't wait for this game!  Hopefully they have a classic player roster, or a way to unlock the original roster.  Can't go wrong with Skiles and O'Neil.

Little known fact about me.  I used to scream "boomshakalaka" during the Bulls first championship run back in '91.  Then NBA Jam started doing it.  I guess I'm cool with it.

You mean Ed O'Neil (Easy Cure's avatar)? If you mean Shaq, his name is actually spelled O'Neal I think.

But seriously, it would be funny as hell if Ed O'Neil were a secret character, lol.
