Lots of movies lately.
FLIGHT
Great movie, but not happy by any means. Not really about the plane crash--that's just what frames the larger story of one man's struggle with alcoholism. Kelly Reilly, who played Watson's fiance in those gawdawful Sherlock Holmes movies, is a similarly-addled drug addict here. I definitely recommend seeing it.
THE DINOSAUR PROJECT
One of the worst movies I've had the displeasure of seeing. No, seriously. And there's only one kind of dinosaur in the entire movie. Giganotosaurus-sized waste of time. Found-camera movies are not my bag anyway, but the promise of dinosaurs lured me in. Don't fall for it!
HERE COMES THE BOOM
Surprisingly hilarious and touching. I watch UFC fights with some regularity, so it was interesting seeing Paul Blart get into a fight with an actual UFC fighter towards the end. Salma Hayek was a bonus, too. She's my "get out of marriage free" card, so anything with her is gold. But even without her, it would be a great movie. Kevin James is really growing on me as a comedic actor.
ATLANTIS (the Disney movie)
At the behest of former staffer Pedro Hernandez, I gave this movie a shot. It was good, and not at all what you'd expect from a Disney film. There's no singing (huge plus), very different art direction (supposedly inspired by Mike Mignola's style) (which isn't clear at all), and a great hodgepodge of voice actors including Michael J. Fox, Spock, and Jim Varney in his final role. There's a bizarre turn toward the 2/3rds mark that...doesn't make a lot of sense, but whatever. I wish some more time had been spent on the few interesting vertebrates that barely make an appearance. The tiger-thing looked cool.
SPAWN (1997)
Caught the last half on TV. Holy crap, people. Remember when we thought this movie looked GOOD? Go back and rewatch it, seriously. The battle scene in Hell is ABYSMAL. The movie's only redeeming quality is John Leguizamo as Clown, chewing scenery in every shot he's in. Violator was cool in 1997, but looks terrible now. Like most of the film. I do wonder why it never got a sequel, though. I remember it doing well at the box office.
