New Super Mario Brothers 2?
« on: April 13, 2009, 09:42:42 PM »
It's been at least two years. I know the original still sells well, but when are we going to get a sequel?

I also hope it's more difficult.  The first one was fun, but there was no challenge in it.

I think a sequel is inevitable considering the first games success. It's just a matter of when they feel they need to release it.

I personally hope they add elements from Mario Brothers 3 like the leaf.

The original managed to sell at least 366K in December 2008 and is still selling well, a sequel won't come anytime soon. I would be surprised if we see a sequel before 2011 at the earliest.

'11 seems to be a long shot. I'll bet they are already making it in some form and once sales drop they will release the new one. I guess 2010.

I think they will take the approach they have with console Mario's. They haven't released multiple Mario platformers on 1 system since the SNES (and even that is depending on if you count Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island as a real Mario game). I don't think they feel the pressure to make a new Mario platformer for the DS since they have tons of other software pushing the system.

I want a sequel of coarse, I just don't think one will come anytime soon.

Maybe we'll see a DSi specific one to encourage fans to make the upgrade? Add some camera mini-games or the option to give Mario your face.

I personally don't think we'll see another platformer bearing Mario's name. A spin-off platformer? Maybe. Developed by either Good Feel or Tose, I would be happy. Artoon? It's chances of me enjoying it would be shot right to hell.

...Can I have a Goemon type game for DSi, Good Feel? Plz?

Nintendo seems to have understood that "retro" reinvented is selling.

New Super Mario Bros.
Yoshi's Island DS

So a sequel to New Super Mario Bros is coming, the question is what do you do for the game?  Personally, I would go straight to Super Mario Bros 2, and make a true sequel to that game and name it New Super Mario Bros 2.  Keep the game play the same, and figure out a new power up that fits that game style, or even a new character to play as.

I would save Super Mario 3 for New Super Mario 3 and I would think that would be a launch game for DS2 or whatever next evolution of the DS will come in about 2 years.

Well, at the very least, I wonder if they'll release Super Mario All Stars for download on the DSi in the meantime....

By Super Mario Brothers 2 do you mean the one that was a redesign of Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic? I love that game, a sequel to it would be like a dream come true.

While that is true in and of itself, it isn't the case with Super Mario Brothers 2 or any such sequel. I want to see Birdo as playable, not as an enemy, so I'd actually rather not see Birdo in any such SMB2 sequel though I know that wouldn't happen since he was a prominent enemy.

I want a New Super Mario World.  I loved that game.  Playing it in 2.5D would be awesome.

Super Mario World and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island are the best 2D platforming games created.

I have not played a platformer game without as much care or balance than those 2 games.  However saying that, I think Super Mario Bros 3 is more classic than Mario World.  It was the game that redefined the direction of Mario platformers and really platform games in general.  The suits, the world map, scope of feeling like the Koopas have an entire army attacking the Mushroom Kingdom, it was amazing.

Now, I do believe Super Mario World had many of those story elements in the game, but it was more localized and felt like a smaller adventure.  So as much as I want a new Mario World, I realize that can be accomplished with a New Super Mario Bros. 3.

Also, I would save the 2.5D Mario game to be Super Mario Bros. 4, which would be completely new power ups (even if they are similar powerup with a different look) and new gameplay elments.

Nintendo's not going to call any new Mario Super Mario Bros. 4, that was the name of Super Mario World in Japan. And I hope they base it on SMB3 and not World, I don't think I've ever been more disappointed in a game than I was with Super Mario World.

Wow, I don't know what to say. I love Super Mario Bros. 3, but to me Super Mario World is easily the best 2D Mario game ever (maybe the best Mario gamer period, or a closed second to Super Mario Galaxy).

What? How so? I agree that I'd rather see SMB3 next but what was so disappointing about World?

I can see how someone coming off of Super Mario Bros 3, could be disappointed with World.

1)Less Power Ups,
2)No Suits
3)Smaller Scope Story (compared to 3)

However, I would say that limiting the powerups to basically 5 powerups allowed for the game to be much tighter in level design.  Levels were generally much larger, better balance of difficulty, and overall much more enjoyable then Super Mario 3.

However, I think some people could see the design choices of Super Mario World to be a step backwards, which is why I expect a New Super Mario Bros 3, before a New World.

Super Mario World wasn't very ambitious like Super Mario Brothers 3 was, but instead it was a refinement of all of the elements which made the first three games so wonderful. Maybe some people expected more, but I'd rather have a refinement that works than an evolution that falls flat.
