IGN's import coverage is very critical -- bad controls and terrible acting, they say.  Both could be improved in localization.

Issues like controls don't tend to get fixed, the acting will be redone anyway but I'd suspect the English acting will be a miserable little pile of secrets.

The controls have a few little annoyances, but overall they're fine, and certainly no killer flaws.

I dunno what ign's beef with the [voice-] acting is though, it seems fine to me.  Maybe ign doesn't like the style -- it's more weepy drama than epic battle -- but the voice acting itself is absolutely fine, and to say it's "terrible" is simply ... wrong.  Indeed, at least the initial segment with "PF" is quite moving.  The pervasive voice + simultaneous text is really nice -- unlike most games, pretty much all the text has voice.

Complaints I have:
  • it's very linear (essentially like most japanese rpgs)
  • poly count and texture quality are kind of low sometimes (though never absurdly so)
  • the enemies can be repetitive (though they're not really the focus, and can usually just be avoided)
  • too much simplistic "find key to unlock door" gameplay

The main strong point is the atmosphere, which is drop-dead wonderful:  there's a wistfulness and melancholy showa-era feel about everything that's just really cool.  It's a really refreshing change from the typical fantasy rpg.

Lookin' around...  That's one reason I wish it were less linear, it'd be cool to have larger areas to explore.

I haven't played all that far, mind you, so who knows though...

It's obviously not a grade-A+ title, but I think it definitely has its niche.  I've always been fond of that nostalgic showa vibe, so for me it's a trip.

I was hoping we'd hear some news about Fragile during E3. It's great that it's getting localized. Fragile just looks like it will be a unique experience.

I did finish playing Fragile, and must say, while I really liked the general atmosphere and vibe of the first 2/3 or so of the game, it has a very lame ending, and in general gets worse and worse as the game gets near the end.  Even though I liked the earlier parts of the game, it never really felt like it got going, there was always this "when will the real game start" feeling -- right up to the point where you realize "wait, this is the lame tacked-on ending!"

It seems pretty clear that they had some neat ideas, and managed to implement some of them at least partially, but simply ran out of time/money/inspiration/management-support at some point.

It would be great to see some of the creators make a more fully-realized game along the same lines.

BTW, the "soundtrack CD" included with the game (at extra cost!) only includes the "incidental" music, which was pretty annoying, as the title/ending tunes (sung by Aoi Teshima) are really nice.  [OTOH, I downloaded them from somewhere without feeling guilty...]

Fragile
Arc Rise Fantasia
Valhalla Knights
Little King's Story

Now I cannot say the Wii will be lacking in JRPGs/Sims that I want. I'll have to find something else to kvetch about...working on that now.

I'm glad the game is confirmed for those places. I really have the lack of console region parity. I scared one of my non-gamer friends when I went off on a near hour long rant about it. I also did it to another friend on the phone but toned it down to include all forms of media and gave it an especially music focused spin.

All signs point to me needing to blog about it. Except I don't blog. I write, and typically don't post those things on the internet. Maybe I should man up and change that.

Arc Rise Fantasia

And since Conduit came out with ringing success the complaining about quality core/traditional focused FPS games is out the window as well.

Though if your a European you could join Greg's ExciteStrike, currently in week 10 I believe.

There's also the Fatal Frame Failure.

TGS 2008 trailer 3 (song: "Hikari" by `Aoi Teshima`)

This game has a cute barefooted girl who appears to stay clean in a post-apocalyptic world.  I also started listening to the theme song A LOT last night.

I wanted this game this year D=

Jan 2010 release.  AREN'T YOU OVERJOYED?

2010 is the most crowded year EVER.  All those out-of-touch journalists will be like "wow what a great year for gaming!" while normal people will be like "**** you!  We can't afford all those nice expensive electronic commodities."  Aniticipated game after anticipated game will flop left and right.

Yep, there's definitely an long-dreaded irony in all these companies delaying their games past Christmas to avoid having all their stuff out at the same time and drown each other out...only to schedule them all in Quarter 1 of 2010 so they're all out at the same time and drown each other out.  Hooray for common sense in the video game industry!
