"Is the TV you are watching now a wide screen TV?"
« on: August 19, 2007, 03:55:51 PM »
Does anybody else think the recent poll result on Everybody Votes channel is interesting?

48.8 percent voted "Yes", 51.2 percent voted "No, it's different".

Since "wide screen" is basically synonymous with "HDTV", it seems that Nintendo vastly underestimated the adoption of HD...

Also, is this an example of Nintendo using Everybody Votes channel for market research?

I hear the next poll is going to be "who has the longest user name on the internet".

And reported you have been. If I see anymore of this garbage from you, I don't think I need to tell you what's going to happen.

I disagree.  There is a non-responder bias inherent in all Internet polls.

Not to mention... the country with the highest number of widescreen penetration is the UK, where it's possible to buy SD widescreen TVs. (or so I hear)

The US is waaaaaaaaay down at the bottom with less widescreen penetration. And there's even more people without widescreens who aren't tech-progressive enought to hook their Wiis to the internet.

Good points, but the response for "yes" still seems higher than I thought. Too bad we can't see the raw number of responses.

Yeah, it was much higher than I thought. Sounds like Nintendo should start giving a little more 16:9 support!

This is how I get down. 32" for TV, movies, gaming and computing

I actually plan on buy ing a 20+" specifically for the computer pretty soon though.
I have a 19" monitor but that thing takes up way too much space.

SD widescreen TVs have been around for a long time. I'm confused by your comment or was it a joke?

The next question needs to be "Have you already filled up all 100 friend codes in your Address Book?" with the answers "Yes, need more room!" and "No, I'm fine."

Because I NEEDS MORE ROOM.

I'm sure Nintendo's decision regarding HD support will be dependent on how popular it is in Japan.  NCL doesn't think of the world outside of Japan and will make blanket decisions for all regions based entirely on their homeland.

Plus the poll is biased as it relies on people who can actually get a wireless router working with their Wii.  Those people are likely not non-gamers and are more tech-savy and thus more interested in widescreen TVs.  The "the black bars cut off the top and bottom" people aren't online with their Wii.

Most people that can't work that kind of stuff get their kids to do it for them.  Most younger people can figure it out well enough, or get more tech-savvy friends to help them out.

It isn't, though. An HDTV is a TV which can run in 1080p resolution with a specialized tuner built in.

Widescreen TVs were being sold for years before HDTV came out.

But in the U.S., 99.9% of widescreen tvs sold in the last 5 years are HD.  It could be those people have SD widescreens from 2000.  But it's more than likely the UK SD thing making the poll meaningless.

Or you could just go into the poll details and see where each individual country falls.

This is easy:  because multiple Miis can vote, the users with Widescreen TVs have a larger Mii/Wii ratio.  My roommate voted on my TV, a widescreen, and so did I.  This is the first poll I can think of where all Miis on a Wii would cast the same vote, and I think that had a strong effect on the outcome.

Actually, according to another forum, Japan was the first to adapt to this HD stuff long before the rest of the world. They're actually ahead of us in HD adaption rate.

I honestly don't know if it's true, but even if it is, it's sure as hell not hurting the Wii in anyway.
