I know this is the Funhouse (W00t), but I must turn serious for just a mo'
Trans fat is bad. Really, really bad. The news that New York has banned it is very welcome in my eyes because it's something that needs to be banned everywhere. It's been banned in European countries for years already. Why? Simple: do you like cancer? Trans fat greatly increases your risk for certain types of cancer (like prostate). Even the tiniest amounts of it increase your risk, so you have to really watch out. I think there are other bad things associated with it, but that's the biggie.
It's in so many things too – even things that say "No Trans Fat!" on the packaging. Apparently, the FDA folks say that companies can label a product with the little "No Trans Fat" seal if there's less than 1g per serving. It's a pretty scary/deceptive loophole, but there's a way to watch for it anyways. Just check the ingredients: if you see anything that says "partially hydrogenated (some type of oil)" then it's got trans fat in it. Now, here's where vudu's and my information differ: from what I understand,
fully hydrogenated oils are ok, but it's the
partially hydrogenated ones that cause the problems. I don't know either way, so I just avoid them both. (shrug)
And, why should the government be doing this? Ignorance. Because consumers don't know any better, and don't seek out the information for themselves, it's up to the government to protect them. Perhaps if there were some "No trans fat" advocacy group out there, consumer demand would be enough. Such a group doesn't exist, or if it does, it is no match for the big food industry lobbyists, so they're restricted to a low profile. I don't know what the reason is, but the more laws like this exist, the less I have to preach to my friends and family about the dangers of trans fat. And, yes, you guys count as friends. Awww!
So avoid hydrogenated oils and by association trans fat! Be a smart, well-informed consumer and look at the ingredients of the stuff you buy and make your voice heard with your dollars. Trans fat is bad and shouldn't be used. Maybe if we make enough of an impact this way, laws banning it won't be necessary, because it won't make good business sense for companies to continue using ingrdients which hurt its consumers.
END RANT.
