Topic: Non-Gaming Publications Support the Wii

I've grown tired of looking for the threads on news articles on the Wii (Time magazine says..., CNN says..., etc etc.) So I'm gonna make this thread for all Non-Gaming Publications that release news articles regarding the Wii. I know Popular Science, CNN/Money, Time, NYT, Washington Post and many more have released articles but I'm not gonna bother looking for them.

Things will get better. The debut last year of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console was almost as unimpressive as the PlayStation 3’s introduction, but now the 360 has Gears of War, a fantastic third-person shooter from Epic Games that is similar to Resistance but superior to it in every way.

But most of these games will offer a very familiar experience. Nintendo is gambling that the Wii’s innovative controls and relatively low price will attract gamers who want something fresh, even if the Wii is too underpowered ever to support a game with the glossy good looks of Gears of War. I hope they’re right. If the Wii makes innovation profitable, perhaps so many inventive games will come out next fall that I won’t even have time to play the boring ones.

Sounds good to me, so I will just move the previous Wall Street Journal point into here:

"Some more good press it seems, as the Wall Street Journal, in a head to head comparison of the Wii vs. the PS3, dubbed the former "the more exciting, fun and satisfying of the two new game machines." I read most of the article at work today, but sadly the Wall Street Journal only has their articles online for subscribes", and sadly the summary is now down for everyone but them too.

I'm going to laugh if by the third Generation of Wii games we get a game that looks and sounds better then Gear of War somehow.

At first glance, the Wii might seem like an inferior video game console, at least when compared to the Sony Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360.

But what the Wii lacks in processing power, it makes up for with its controller. Unlike every other game console, the Wii controller isn't built around a confusing alphabet of buttons. Instead, Nintendo uses Bluetooth wireless technology to translate your body movements directly onto the screen.

This is the Wii's real innovation. To understand how the Wii turns Zelda into a passionate experience, we have to revisit an old theory of emotion, first proposed by the great American psychologist and philosopher William James. In his 1884 article "What is an emotion?" James argued that all of our mental feelings actually begin in the body. Although our emotions feel ephemeral, they are rooted in the movements of our muscles and the palpitations of our flesh. Typical of his work, James' evidence consisted of vivid examples stolen straight from real life, such as a person encountering a bear in the woods.

"What kind of an emotion of fear would be left," James wondered, "if the feeling of quickened heart beats nor of shallow breathing, neither of trembling lips nor of weakened limbs, neither of goose bumps nor of visceral stirrings, were present?" James' answer was simple: without the body there would be no fear, for an emotion begins as the perception of a bodily change. When it comes to the drama of feelings, our flesh is the stage.

Of course, all this emotion can have its drawbacks. Just imagine how bad you'll feel when the Gooper Blooper kills off Mario. Because you've spent the last few hours inhabiting Mario's body, his death will be difficult to shrug off. While our brains know that Mario is only a cartoon, our bodies are much more gullible. (As James noted, our feelings also linger longer in the body than in the mind.) Sometimes we just want our video games to be pleasant distractions, without the melodrama that comes from having our bodies involved. That's why we have the Playstation and Xbox: they only get our thumbs excited.

Not a publication per se, but I was watching Glenn Beck last night and he reccomeded buying a Wii for the kids so that they could play Wii Sports, the strap would break, the remote would smash the old TV, and the wife would be forced to agree to purchasing a plasma TV. Pretty clever win-win scenario and free publicity.

I thought it was interesting the news carried so fast as it was the same day Iwata acknowledged there might be a "problem" with the straps.

Thanks for bringing this back to the top MJRx9000 so I didn't have to go searching for it, but anyway in the latest issue of "Business Week" they cited the Wii as one of the best products of 2006. They have a listing just for the console up on their site too related to this:

Apparently Glamour magazine likes it, imo the editorial is inches away from pointing out the similarities between the wiimote and nunchuck vs a certain female pleasure product   The girls might not need us guys anymore, lol.

The Wii hasn't been award as of yet so I shared the time of the other call ins. There is an HDTV also.....

The two prizes awarded were to Digital Camcorder and the Home Theater System.

The funny thing is American is an Electronic Store but they are big on Sony equipment, so I'm surprised they didn't offer the PS3 but instead they are offering a Wii, another surprise is they don't carry game systems or games usally.

Forbes magazine has picked the Wii at #4 as one of the Top 10 Disrupters Of 2006, saying that Nintendo "has transformed the gaming experience, making it more immersive, compelling and widely appealing. The big boys better be taking notes."

Target shoppers in search of a PlayStation 3, however, were in luck. In addition to the handful out on the floor on Tuesday, there were at least 15 PlayStations in back waiting to be sold.

Ok the magazine came a while ago but once again the PC Magazine had another article on the Wii. They seem to really love the console because this is the third month in the row they have talked about it. (The article is some things that they want to see get impoved, most of them are on the way as they noted.)

Some on NeoGAF counted up the first hundred responses to the question posed at the end of this New York Times Article about how the Wii is so far upsetting the PS3 majorly. People were asked which of the two systems they preferred:

97-2 in favor of the Wii.

It's amazing, you have to see it to believe it. 318 comments so far as of this post, and practically 99% of them are all in favor of the Wii. it's gangbusters!
