If random hackers can program N64 emulators for the PC that can emulate controller packs, you'd think Nintendo could.  Lame.

Whine, whine, whine, it is not easy to make a be all to end all for all three controllers. Besides the Wiimote works perfectly for NES, TGX, and the classic works decently with N64 and perfectly with the SNES, and Genesis.

I think the N64 memory card stuff is just Nintendo being Nintendo.  They have the special ability able to pull off effortlessly stuff that everyone else seems to f*ck up and to f*ck up stuff that everyone else seems to pull off effortlessly.

Ah, but when do we get Streets of Rage 3?

Also: Vector man? COOL! I( was a Nintendo fanboi when this was released and didn't own a Genesis, but I remember despising vectorman for doing what DKC did first... still, that hate has allowed me to remember the game in a nostalgic fashion, and now I may actually want to buy it...

Oh, that's the JAPANESE VC LIST? DARN!!!

SEGA is usually good about releasing VC titles the same time here and in Japan.. sometimes earlier even.

"Whine, whine, whine, it is not easy to make a be all to end all for all three controllers."

Actually it is remarkably easy.  Make a replica of the N64 controller.  If you add a select button to it it can run any NES, SNES, Genesis, TG-16 and N64 title.

MKD would be a lot better if it had as many tracks and modes as MKS.  It was just a lack of content on that game was what really got me and stole greatness from it.

What about new VC games? Or Wii games that also use the Classic Controller (DBZ, Mortal Kombat, etc)? They need a second analogue stick.

I remember suggesting this too.  But perhaps they could just use the N64 controller and use the Z as Select.  Easy!

To make it less "weird-looking" and more standard, they could change or remove the central "prong" and have two analogue sticks instead.

If it were up to me, I'd either do that, or take the Classic Controller as it is, and add two more shoulder buttons and two more face buttons.  A few more buttons isn't going to make a difference in terms of scaring away people by having too many buttons.  How many people who complain about "too many buttons" actually have a number (larger than one) that is their absolute threshold of button tolerance?  No one ever says "I can handle eight buttons but not nine".  WTF?!?

"What about new VC games? Or Wii games that also use the Classic Controller (DBZ, Mortal Kombat, etc)? They need a second analogue stick."

Then use the same design but with six face buttons.  It still isn't that hard.  You basically take the requirements of all the supported VC systems, add any requirements for new games based on whatever Nintendo decides they want and away you go.  It's pretty much just simple addition.

Minimum VC requirements:
1 d-pad
1 analog stick
2 "adminstration" buttons
6 face buttons
2 shoulder buttons

Logically these should be included as part of the Classic controller at the very least and then any other modern requirements should add to that.

I like JonLeung's design which is pretty much the most flexible controller for almost all classic systems.  The Wii and DS are pretty much the only games systems that would have a problem (though to really have an overall standard two of the shoulder buttons would have to be analog like the Cube and the analog sticks need to "click" like the PS2).

Three shoulder buttons.  Some N64 games actually used L, R, and Z.

I've yet to read complaints about the classic controller for N64 games. Has anyone else had difficulties?

Not that Ian usually has any actual experience to back up his bitching.

I may be the only one, but I can't stand the classic controller. It just doesn't feel right, doesn't sit comfortably or something, I think it's the curved back. I loved the NES, SNES, N64, and GC controllers. I tried playing MK64 the other day and it just wasn't the same at all, hopefully third parties will release a few classic controller options.

Well there only has been two N64 VC games released thus far.  The "problem" is the lack of two face buttons.  In a case like Super Mario 64 the second analog stick is a good workaround but it may become an issue as more games are released.

...and it may not. Shocking you would simply assume it will. Shocking.

I love the CC, it feels nice to hold and works very well.

There were a fair number of N64 games that used the C buttons as actual face buttons.  Some of them could probably have their buttons remapped decently (e.g., Starfox 64 could probably have brake and boost mapped to the a and x buttons, and ROB64 could be put on one of the Z buttons or something), but I can say with certainty that Zelda is just awkward without six face buttons.

Why? It worked for the GC and Navi doesn't need a button all of her own. The classic controller may not have 6 face buttons but it has four shoulder buttons. Just use ZL and ZR as face buttons if necessary.

It worked on the 'Cube, but it was awkward.  And you can't just map some of the c buttons to shoulder buttons, because then playing the ocarina becomes confusing.
