Wiimail addresses: simple!
« on: November 21, 2006, 05:11:03 AM »
People can send your Wii email if you register them as email addresses, at which point they receive a message like this:

An owner of a Wii Console is asking permission
to register you as a Wii Friend to exchange
e-mail with you. This individual's Wii e-mail address is
w4563568255995867@wii.com <mailto:w4563568255995867@wii.com>

If you would like to exchange e-mail with this
individual, simply reply to this message.
You will then be able to exchange e-mail with
the following Wii address:
w4563568255995867@wii.com <mailto:w4563568255995867@wii.com>

If you are unfamiliar with this Wii console and
its sender, please erase this e-mail without
responding to it.

Your Wiimail address is "w" followed by your Wii's unique console number, followed by "@wii.com".

Neat, eh?

So your Wii code also doubles as a Wii e-mail address? Do you need to input the long number code every time you want to send an e-mail or does the system automatically writes it in for you? I ask because it would be an annoyance to write those long numbers every time you want to send a simple message.

Only people who don't have Wiis need to use that email address to send emails to Wiis.

As for typing it in, every email program worth its salt saves the email addresses you use so when you type "w", it should come up with a list of Wii email addresses.

Oh! Wait...what you are saying is that I can send YOU an e-mail from my computer to your Wii?

...I don't get it. :\

You can email a Wii.  That's what it boils down to you.  You can email to or from a Wii, to any other email address.

Also handy, if your phone has text messaging, you can send a text message to an email address.  That means, you can text your Wii.  Handy reminders!

OK, let me see if I got it right...

1. First I fire up Outlook express (or any e-mail program of service)
2. Then I create a new message
3. Then for the address I write it exactly as SB explained it here (w"wiicode number here"@wii.com")
4. At that point I receive the message SB posted
5. My friend will get the e-mail on his or her Wii

Is this how it works? I admit I am not 100% clear on this...

Yes - but the Wii you are e-mailing must first have your e-mail address set-up in the address book (this is where your friend info. is stored) otherwise it won't go through.

Wait, so that means that you need a Wii and a Wii code so that the other person can register it, THEN I can e-mail their Wii?

...I'm sorry I am still lost as hell.

You can email their Wii once they've added your email address to their Wii address book.

Likewise, on their Wii, when they add your email address to their Wii address book, they will not be able to email you right away - it will send a confirmation email to your email address, and you will have to reply.

To summarize:

To email another Wii from your Wii: add their Wii code to your address book, and have your friend add your Wii code to his Wii address book.  Then you will be able to email each other's Wiis.

To email a Wii from an email address: Enter the email address in the Wii's address book.  Wait for the confirmation to hit your email address, and then reply to that email.  Then you will be able to send email to that Wii from your regular email account, and vice versa.

Your conversational partner has disconnected.

Ah, this helps greatly. Thanks!

I think this post should be on the first cause, quite frankly, I did NOT understand what SB was getting at...

Pap, I will add your email address to my Wii's registration database when I get home from work tonight.

You will receive an email which contains my Wiimail address and THEN you will be able to send my Wii email.

Got it?

I haven't messed with it yet, but it sounds like the Wii has an email address whitelist.  It won't accept any messages from any address not on that list.  You do not have to own a Wii of your own to send an email to somebody else's Wii.  The owner of the Wii has to initiate contact by registering your email address (adding it to the whitelist).  If typing the Wii's email address is a bother (which it is), any email program worth anything at all will let you add it to an address book.

OK, although I did send the message (since I wasn't still clear how the whole system works).

I tried the email feature late last evening.  It seemed to take a while for it to send the "please reply" email from my Wii, and afterwards I had trouble connecting to the Internet to see if I could now send email back and forth.  I'm not sure if it was my Wi-Fi Connector or if Nintendo's servers or whatever are still having some initial hiccups.

Because of the various online services, I'm considering a wired connection instead of a wireless one.  The wireless one requires my other computer to be on, but with ZoneAlarm off (I'm not comfortable with that).  I turn off my computer every night out of habit (even though apparently most people I know don't do that) and even if I do change my habits my mom now sleeps in the computer room and she goes to sleep way too early so I have to turn off that computer anyway.  A wired connection should mean that I can go online anytime, be connected constantly, and more reliably, no matter what the other computer is doing or not doing.

My Wii will not receive emails from you until I've added your email address to my list, making it an "approved" email.

Otherwise, you COULD message someone just by knowing their code, making it possible for pedophiles to browse forums and email children.

And get on aim, Pap.

I tried to send myself 2 jpeg files for the Wii. The email didn't seem to go through. Has anyone been able to do this?

I haven't tried sending image files yet but I'm guessing they won't go through.
