Four Wii U games, all decent placings, too. Splatoon's got them legs, and Mario Kart is sitting in a respectable place. Even Wooly World isn't that bad, just because it's not a huge deal.

I hope Splatoon's success teaches Nintendo that they need to branch out more from the usual Mario fare.  They launch the Wii U with a by-the-numbers Mario game that's the same routine everyone has played a million times since 1985 and the console just DIES.  Later they release a brand new IP in a genre that they've pretty much never touched before and the game sells great considering the platform it is on.  An endless assortment of 2D platformers is ignored but something new that's not quite like anything else on the market attracts attention.  If you want people to buy a new console you have to give them something new and different.  If the same tired franchises moved systems they would have moved Gamecubes and they didn't.  So next time around they should put some real effort into new stuff like they did with Splatoon and not assume that trotting out tired Mario clichés is going to sell systems.

Oddly, I could have sworn one of the largest complaints about the GameCube launch was "no mario title"....

I agree UB.  I think a bit of it was more releasing the Mario game as an afterthought and not as the flagship title, which was Nintendoland.

NSMB U did great at launch though.  Everyone seems to forget in Japan and America, the Wii U had a good launch for that holiday.  The hardcore Nintendo fans bought the system in good numbers in both countries during holiday 2012, with NSMB U having an insane attachment rate among the buyers.  The problem is after the holiday the sales dropped like a rock, but for the launch itself, Mario did his job.  The problem was the legs were killed because Nintendo released the inferior NSMB 2 a few months earlier.  Once the hardcore bought the system at launch, the more casual Nintendo fans were perfectly happy with their cheaper, lower quality handheld version.  This has been the biggest problem for the Wii U in general for Nintendo.  Nobody wants to buy a Wii U because they can play most of it's biggest games on a much cheaper handheld.

It's like the success of NSMB DS and Wii made them think they could get away with releasing similar games on each system, not realizing there was a 3.5 year gap between both of those games, and NSMB Wii introduced actual 4 character multiplayer which was a huge addition to the Mario franchise since now friends and family could play the game together at the same time.  None of the Wii U games that had 3DS versions have had anywhere close to this gap in space between them with a big new game-changing gameplay feature like that included.  Not hard to see why history isn't repeating itself.

Seriously, if Nintendo had released Splatoon for the 3DS a few months earlier then the Wii U version the Wii U game would be lucky to sell even half of what it's currently doing.  What Splatoon really shows is if they want to continue having 2 separate consoles, they need to give each one more unique titles again which is what they pretty much were before this generation.

If someone asked me to describe a squid the first thing I would mention would be the tentacles.  Anyone else find it odd that Nintendo squids, both here and with Bloopers, de-emphasize that feature?  It would be like if Nintendo rabbits had tiny little ears or Nintendo leopards had very few spots.

Is it an indication of a low sales month that Minecraft is #2 and the Black Ops combo pack charted?

Yes. Sales leaks on GAF have Until Dawn at less than 90K sold and Rare Replay at less than 106K sold. In Until Dawn's defense, it had been out only a few days but overall software sales were pretty dire.

Well you have to give it to Sony and their TGS 2015 showing.  If anything they are not content with 2nd place in Japan and they are going for blood.  A whole range of exclusives, more colors, and a price reduction for the PS4 (which makes it comparable to WII U pricing) leads me to believe Sony knows what it needs to do to reclaim the top spot.

While Nintendo's basically swapping out their bundles with different downloadable games, keeping it two plain colors with no custom art, and at the same price point it was 2 years ago. :(.

Kinda low sales for an 2D Mario game but if like anything like Splatoon then it really doesn't matter.

Persona 5 is officially delayed until 2016 which just kills me, this was supposed to an stellar year for RPGs but atlas, no Final Fantasy, no Kingdom Hearts, and now no freaking Persona :(.

Still have Fallout 4 and Xenoblade X.

----------------
PS4 price cut won't take effect until Oct 1 so the next couple of weeks I'll expect lower numbers than usual.
