What reason did I have not to? The writers were perfectly happy killing Mia in the very second case in the first game and the introduction of Pearl seemed like an obvious set-up for Maya's death in the second one.

You might be right that killing off a main character is something the game writers would not be shy of, however...

Revealing a major plot twist in a thread title would be a really jerky thing to do, and, as we have already established, NWR has no real jerks! Therefore, the so-called "spoiler" S-U-P-E-R put in his thread title could not really have been a spoiler at all!

I think me and S_B have been pwned...BY JUSTICE!

And to think S_B was going to avoid JFA because he feared the series was turning into a never ending bloodbath :p .

I was going to avoid it anyway.

The whole "text adventure w/graphics" bit was admittedly fun the first time, but I wasn't sure how many more times I'd be able to play a game with the exact same formula, hence why I never bought it when it came out and only played it now during a drought.

Capcom is also starting to look like Sega with rampant content reuse. They basically made sure that nearly every character from the first one made a return because it meant drawing and animating fewer characters.

That said, yeah, I thought you were serious, but it was because I figured Capcom would have no qualms with "removing" characters from the game and I already knew Edgeworth was being replaced by Von Karma.

None of what you posted was "OMG! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!!" material so I just took it at face value.

Starting?? Dude, PW is basically a dress rehearsal compared to the king of re-used material, the Street Fighter/VS. series.

And I understand what you are saying. I LOVED the first Kingdom Hearts because it was the first of its kind, but I only enjoyed Kingdom Hearts 2 because it was more of the same and it lacked the magic of the first.

Sadly, it looks like PW 4, which looks to be the first true evolution of the series, will be more of the same.

I saw footage of the first chapter and played near identical to the first two games, complete with shaking screens and sound effects.

I'll admit, though, that I haven't heard anything about the game besides the new characters and some plot elements. Does this new edition changes the gameplay?

The only thing the old games needed is interactive puzzles, and the fourth game has them...

PW2 is just more of the first one except that it uses a special item which basically allows you to cross-examine people outside of the courtroom to get them to spill their secrets.

If they involved more puzzle-solving between courtroom sessions instead of simply poking around until you figure out what the game wants you to present to random witnesses then I could see it as an improvement for the series.

But how would puzzles work in the grand scheme of things?

You mean like in Ace attorney when in the fifth case you needed to spell out the name on the bloody vase?

Or puzzles as if you need to gather evidence and tie them together so that it all points out to the guilty party?

I think the investigations in Phoenix Wright 2 were so annoying because the developers were trying to fix what they thought was wrong with the investigations in Phoenix Wright 1. In the first four cases of the first game, you only had to present a piece of evidence to someone if it was something that would make him or her more willing to talk. I believe this changed because the developers thought the investigations in PW1 didn't require enough thought - they wanted the player to come to the conclusion that she should ask such-and-such a character about such-and-such a person on her own, and so didn't want the game to give her that option up front. And that's why you spend the investigations in PW2 showing every single profile and piece of evidence to every single character.

...But don't fear! I'm pretty sure the developers realized that their fix sucked, or at least that the investigations were still the weakest part of the series. Which is why, in the third game, there are absolutely no investigations at all. And which is also why I'm hopeful for the investigations in the fourth.

They did away with investigations in 3? Seriously?

Strangely enough, I didn't have much problem with presenting the right evidence to people. I seemed to get it right on the first or second try.

I think it's laugho that the investigation aspect is called "poor game design" when it's more "poor thinking on the part of the one complaining about the design"... =3

Perhaps I do suck. The fact remains that the investigations are pretty damn dull. 'Click every dialog option!' and 'click everything of interest in the room!' does not make for great gameplay. I don't hate the investigations - I've played enough adventure games to be used to that kind of tedium, and I appreciate the fact that they're sort of necessary to familiarize the player with the characters and crime scene, and to set up puzzles. And playing detective is a little fun, even if it pales in comparison to playing lawyer. But they could do with some improvement.

Pretty sure. Where did I read that? Oh, in this review.

The gameplay, for the most part, is interesting only because it is refreshing: this is an adventure game, as I have said, that involves no pointing, no clicking on flowerpots, no walking around, no choosing from a pull-down list of locations, no raping your little sister with an octopus, no asking locals for information, no quick-timer-events involving a bar full of bikers when you're supposed to be looking for sailors, no half-assed rendition of the Virtua Fighter 3 fighting engine; not even the phrase "UHO! YARANAIKA?" No -- as I have said, it barely never leaves a courtroom. Or, well, at least, it mostly never leaves the courthouse. There are occasional recess scenes in the hall right outside the courtroom. And Naruhodo's office.

Surprised me too.
