In all actuality the PSP, if implimented correctly, could be a killer remote and, believe or not, with the right features could be considered a bargain.
Think if you will when you start a movie. You can have fun factoids streamed to you psp. You find out thats not where your at so instead of going back to the main menu and distrubing the other people you can find the scene on the psp and skip it right there without anyone knowing it took you a little while.
It's night. Everyone is asleep and your killer hometheater system doesn't have a headphone jack to save a few bucks, or your regular joe setup doesn't but you're pimp so you have a PSP, of course you don't want to wake the wife and baby plus the pets are asleep too. So you just tell the PS3 to stream all the sound to your PSP remote which does have headphone jacks.
Another scenario. Your watching anime. You like Japanese with Subtitles. The misses like English. What to do? Give her the PSP and it can spought out english through the headphones while you enjoy the original Japanese.
PSLive! has a message sent to you. Normal it would pop on your screen interrupting your watching of last weeks Eureka! Maybe even pausing the show to deliver the message. Well that be fine if it's just you but your wife is watching as well. She could care less that SuperNitro626 has found a Goth Lollito Tennis game. So you set it for your messages to go to the PSP where you can still watch and message.
Your watching a documentary and you swear the Lochness Monster showed up in a few shots. So you grab the screen shot to you PSP that allows you to zoom to different parts of it and load it to your computer for further analysis.
Your watching a movie it's dark. The only button you ever use is play and pause. So you change most of the buttons to pause when a movie is playing and you program them so they go to play when the movie is paused. You tell the PSP not to have the screen on. No more fumbling.
Now if the PSP had a touchscreen we could really do some fun things. Actually this has got met thinking on how excellent of a remote the DS could be. Now if it only had an IR transmitter.
