Nintendo intended to bring Wii to shop shelves in the UK and US for £150 and $200, but became influenced by pressure from the larger retail chains, which raised concerns over margins and low so-called 'basket value' (ie, the amount of revenue generated from a customer's overall purchases at the till)
Doesn't make sense. Retailers make a minimal profit on consoles; the margins on accessories and games are much higher. Therefore, retailers would want as low a console price as possible, so that customers would spend more on items other than the console.
On an somewhat note, it's an interesting scenario for third parties (and retailers). On one hand, Nintendo consoles at launch usually have a great tie-in ratio, so more games will be sold. Also, many of Nintendo's own titles have been pushed back, giving the third party games a better chance of higher sales. However, WiiSports is packed in, and developers may be concerned about the impact of it; some buyers may be content with just the package, and won't buy any other games.
