So what was the last secret?
« on: May 09, 2006, 01:34:55 PM »
I thought there was talk and hype about how there was supposed to be one final secret for the Wii.  What is it and where is it?

It's the speaker on the weemote. As just a speaker on the remote it's a lame gimmick, but as an audio compliment to the rumble it's a sweet improvement.

How in the world can that be the last big secret?  If that is true than that is just stupid!

If you know anything about audio equipment, a speaker can just as easily be turned into a microphone.  I'm sure they know this and have implimented it, as Rick has even hinted as such.  That addition alone makes me excited.  Being able to hear when you connect with something (like, say, a bat and ball) helps pull you in even more.  I didn't like it too much when I heard it either, but I think it's wonderful.

Yeah, hearing your "sword" clang in your hand when fighting in Red Steel, or hearing your arrow "enter" the screen in Zelda is pretty nifty, and actually really cool. However, for some reason, I think they have a few other things to talk about.

They also revealed that the system will always be on, like sleep mode for the DS, when you're not playing. This allows updates to your game to download even when you're asleep.

You're the stupid one.  You let the internet hype you up for something huge when you should have known it wouldn't be anything bigger than the controller.

I think there is more, they said it was only one of the other secrets at the conference.  I guess that Sony thing must have made them put some stuff in the closet or something.   I think there will a Space World or something of the sort this year.

apparently it can ring when someone wants to play online against you.  hence the "24-hour-online" thing.

pretty neat if you ask me.  just ring up your friend, if they're home and want to play they can pick up the controller.

apparently from egm...

Isn't TGS around the same time that Space World used to be? From Wiki: The Tokyo Game Show 2006 will be held on September 22–24, which is about a month later. So, Nintendo could just be planning a final unveiling at TGS? That is pretty soon before the console will be released, seems a bit close even allowing for the latest possible launch of mid-late November.

lastexit: I think the ring thing was just an idea from a PGC fourmite, not an official feature.

Nah the online thing isn't what I heard. I think there's still something else. It's not a "wow" feature but the system is better with it.

I was referring to the speaker, but by you saying there's something else, it obviously isn't that either..

LOOONG time lurker, first time poster. w00t!

Speaker + mic + internet access = free voice chat with any of your Wii owning buddies.

Think PictoChat, but waaaaay more awesome.

Well people are chatting about it everywhere anyway, and it's been rumored for a while, so I don't think it'd matter to mention it now.  But I was told it had a speaker AND a mic... Whether or not that'll end up being true I guess we'll see. It's odd that they would mention one but not the other... Iwata almost hinted at it when he compared the remote to the DS.

So that's what I was told anyway.
"wow."

I speculate that any remaining secrets will be no more exciting than the speaker.  Don't believe the hype.

Someone was suggesting the speaker would become an online gaming "phone".  So Bill wants to challenge Ian to a game of Wii ballet and calls Ian up by talking into his Wii controller, even though Ian's Wii is off.  Ian's Wii rings, and he picks up his remote, and talks to Bill, and says, "Surely I'd love to play Wii ballet with you, it's the next best thing to wrestling."

edit: But it wasn't me that came up with that, someone smarter than me thought of it.
That's my opinion, not yours.
