You might be able to find one or two people willing to have an adult conversation on the internet but as for most people, their internet age is 8 and bellow.

What am I actually trying to say? Just give up already. It's not worth the effort. You might as well just join in with the corus and start bashing as well.

I doubt people are pulling a fast one and making stuff up. I believe that for the most part people are being honest, it is just how they phrased the question along with HOW they said it. The negative ones will have one way to say the question, while the so called followers will have another way of asking the question. Even with that said, I am having trouble finding anyone that likes the name that said someone "loved" it, so really your "find" is exagerrated a bit. It seems to be mostly "hate", "confused", or "indifferent".

For the record I am a supporter of "Wii" and I did tell about everyone in my family, most reactions were subdued or confused, there was nothing negative (definately no pee jokes) or nothing really positive. Personally I am going to use joystick's questionaire from now on which can help to avoid any bias in the phrasing of the question about the name.

Mentioned it in my non-gaming related online diary.  I basically said Nintendo's new system is called Wii, I want to know what people who haven't already heard it think, and I included a link to the animation on Nintendo's site.

One person thought it was dumb but didn't care too much.  The other person thought it was okay, but sounded a bit too much like a "try-hard" marketer name.  You know, I think she may have read the whole spiel that came with the animation, I personally found the explanation of the name cheesy and full of marketese.  "It's not about you or me, it's about Wii."  I find stuff like that insulting to my intelligence: it's obviously marketers making too much out of a name.

I also mentioned it casually to my family.  Something like, "So, Nintendo's new system has a name...it's Wii."  I hesitated a bit, may have sounded kind of unsure about it.  My mom had no reaction, my dad was like, "... ... ... Well, that's okay, it's definitely not like anything else."

So I'd say I've got one mildly positive, one indifferent and one mildly negative.

For the record my initial reaction was, "What?", then, "Man, that's fruity, but interesting, I wonder what everyone else thinks?"  My first reaction to the explanation was, "ARGH!  Okay, I get some of the logic behind it, but please shut up with the quasi-inspirational marketing crap."

Well I imagine for most of us our friends and family are going to be a fair bit like us and they're going to have similar ideas and opinions.  It makes sense to me that my family would react similarly to how I did because they think a lot like me.

My dad laughed, made a Wii joke, and then gushed for 10 minutes how awesome Madden would be to play.

He doesn't have much time to play games, but I did buy him Madden on the GC for him and he would play that every spare moment he got for about 2 years.

I've only told my sister and my mother, both of whom are (obviously) girls, and who were already interested in the system.
One friend (who owns a Gamecube) heard about it.  He said the name Wii is fun, but he preferred Revolution.
Another friend (big-time gamer) disliked the name at first but grew to like it.
I'm pretty sure that's all I know of, right now.

My sister called me yesterday and asked if I had heard about Wii.  She isn't much of a gamer, so I was surprised she's been following it.

She wants me to suggest her mother to get her one for her birthday.  If it were my brother it would be pretty much impossible to resist saying "he really wants to play with his Wii using his free hand [controller]."

This reminds me, a really big part of this name change was, I imagine, removing barriers to gaming for females. That's why I don't think any name Nintendo chose would really satisfy the hardcore crowd - no matter what, the name wouldn't seem 'normal' or 'neutral' to hardcore gamers, because the name was specifically designed not to look or sound like a traditional console name.

I just thought that the "Now Nintendo needs you, because its not about you or me, is about Wii" is a really creepy phrase, like they are recruiting us as mindless drones to promote their console.

You know, she asked for a DS last year (Nintendogs).  It is the first (and only) video game machine she has ever owned.  She plays Animal Crossing online, and steals my villagers (letters to her often read something like "GIVE ME BACK PUDGY! ").

That stuff they feed us about "avenues to girl gamers" isn't total BS, just like 60%.  I mean, yes she owns a pink DS, and she bought one additional game.  But that's all she owns.  If "opening" is selling 2 game carts then I guess mission accomplished.  I would think they would have higher aspirations.

I really hope my brother asks.  I already have the email to our father in mind.  I'm pretty sure I will squeeze more Wii jokes in then in all the IGN-blogs combined.  Hey, I know he hasn't heard them.

Good thing Nintendo doesn't sell their hardware at a loss!

Personally, I think sales are sales. Those 2 games may not seem like much, but they're 2 sales that wouldn't have happened on another gaming system. And this stuff adds up.

I think they need more "non-games" that target specific demographics.  I don't care if they put out Nintendcats or heck Nintendferrits, she isn't going to play Metroid Primer Hunters.

I think a good strategy would be to make "non-games" that have elements from more "game-like" products.  The goal being to ease people into "real games."

Crimm you are right on, the "non-games" should be the bridge to real games. Nintendo needs to do the frog in boiling water analogy, they can't have the water boiling at first or it will jump out, but slowly heat up the water until there is no escaping .

yes, nintendo wants girls to play with Wii's. they'll introduce IP's that will attract girls and you can say "hey i have that game" and she'll come over and play with your Wii. you should thank nintendo, stop bitching about the name (to everyone who does bitch)

I wanted to report one more person I asked about the name "Wii" this is from a father in his late 40s. I used joysticks questions and the response I got was "It sounds oriental" he pronounced it right too. Also he added once I told him it was the new Nintendo console that "I don't like it. Sounds too "trendy" ... like they overdid the techno angle"

Okay, this time I'm not making it up. The other day I told my mom the name of the new Nintendo system, she was like "Alright, that sounds kinda weird," the important thing is, the other day she proved my point about the name being memorable. Then a couple of days later she was like "When does that new Nintendo thing come out, you know, that 'Weeeeeeeee' thing." This is amazing as my mom never get's the names of consoles right. She called my GameCube an Xbox hundreds of times. The N64 and SNES were simply called "Nintendo."

My girlfriend was excited about the Wii, and still is. She simply said that it's a weird name. Nothing good or bad about it, just weird.

This system is basically targeted to be interesting to everyone no matter what type of game player, age-group, etc. you are because rather than pushing buttons, you're actually PLAYING the game.  To stir a pot in cooking game you don't repeatedly push a button; you actually stir the controller.  To sword fight in an action game you don't repeatedly push a button; you actually swing the controller like a sword.  To throw the ball in a football game you don't repeatedly push a button; you do a throwing motion while holding the controller!  It makes video games fun because it makes them an active recreation activity.  It looks like it will be a cool system for groups (similar to board games of today) because various skill levels can pick it up and instantly have fun.

It's tough to explain, but as soon as it comes out we'll play a demo and that way you can better understand the fun in 'PLAYING a game' rather than 'playing a GAME.'"
