Top tier characters apparent already??
« on: November 17, 2005, 04:48:58 AM »
So, in all the online racing I've done, it seems like 95% of people are picking either Yoshi or Luigi (myself included).  Are we already seeing the top tier characters showing through?  I for one aren't near as good racing as other characters.

Please still spoiler any unlockable characters as I have only unlocked Dry Bones and Daisy so far.

To continue my conversation with myself...

I recently unlocked the third cars for all the characters and Waluigi.  While the third cars open up a few more possibilities for the best racer, I still think Yoshi's combination of handling, acceleration, and speed (in the egg car) makes him the best racer.

Will anyone argue with me?  =P

Whoa I just noticed Yoshi's third kart, that's a deadly combination of stats, i've been using Mario and his 1st kart, which has similar stats, but this seems better. Also i've seen lots of people using Peach and her 3rd kart and powersliding like crazy, and it seems very effective, since that's the closest someone has come to straight up outracing me (they disconnected as I layed it down in Rainbow Road, my favourite track).

Ok, so I just beat the single player Cups on all difficulties with Dry Bones, and his 3rd cart.  I started out as a Luigi/Yoshi guy myself, but the cornering this new guy alotted me was awesome.  There was only 1 cup that I had to replay, and that was on the  150cc mirror mode.  Me likey this game.  Now I only wonder if the game was just made to be easy, or if that guy is actually that awesome.

I might be getting Mario Kart (fashionably late!!) this week - are there, in fact, pretty solid character tiers?

It's become pretty apparent that, although perfectly driving with the slow accel, high speed heavy cars should mean victory, using high handling light cars and spark spamming is the way to go.

I personally haven't been able to use R.O.B. yet as I haven't unlocked him, but Jonny and WindyMan seemed to be doing quite well with him in the races I played against them yesterday.  I look forward to trying him out.

Light cars are best for multiplayer because it's not possible to drive perfectly.  When items are flying all over the track, you want a car that can get hit and then get going again before losing too much ground.  To drive a heavy car, you need to be very good at defending your position.

Agreed, a character like Bowser CAN win but for most people it would take entirely too much work.   I did use Bowser in an online cup once against Yoshi's and Luigi and did win it, then with another group where Bowser took it all home.  In both situations, that Bowser made next to no mistakes and in the second situation the defense was admirable.  However, that's the ONLY times I've seen anyone like that win.  Wario's chances are better, but it's still uphill.

I like using Wario, but that's mostly because I started out playing with him and just got good at using him. I still need to get this wireless thing handled so I can go against some other players.

All I see now is Yoshi or Dry Bones. Very rare that I will see any other characters, pretty sad too.

Dry Bones is statistically the best for straight mini turbos/snaking because of his high acceleration and low drifting. Yoshi is probably second best, but he's also had a big boost in popularity since people on gamefaqs started finding out that Azen Zagenite uses him (he's one of the best online players). ROB and Luigi both benefit from high max speed and acceleration, making them ideal for tracks where it's difficult to snake. These four characters will definitely be the top tier. Get used to seeing them (or their karts, at least).

I like mixing it up.  So far the only character that I can't do anything with is Bowser.

Bowser would be nice if not for the fact that character weight has no effect in online matches. That is to say, you can't bump characters that are lighter than you. Otherwise, Bowser could be a formidable opponent in the right hands, since he's tied for the highest speed and has the highest weight. Heavy weights just got royally screwed for online play since they get none of their benefits and all of their weaknesses.

Has anyone else noticed that the speed stat means WAY more in 150cc than in 100cc? In 150cc I can actually catch up to people on straights with a fast kart, on 100cc I gain like 1 centimetre on the map.

EDIT: Ok i've done some experimenting and it seems the speed stat isn't just straight line speed, but the higher your speed stat the faster you go when powerboosting.

I thought powerboosts were tied to accel, not speed?

Yeah, so I finally got this game today for Christmas...character tiers are definitely apparent.  I played a game with 3 others in Rival mode just now (my first online match) as Dry Bones and got owned (3rd place with Luigi in 1st and Yoshi in 2nd, Toad in 4th).  I played again with the same people as Yoshi, tied for 2nd with Yoshi 2 with Lugi in 1st...played once again with the same people as Lugi and tied for 1st with the other Luigi.  Toad's pretty good too, my opponent just sucked.

I use Luigi in Dry bones' tank thingy, does the character honestly make a difference, I thought it was just the kart.

I'm sorry, but losing just because I happened to miss ONE mini-turbo is starting to get really stupid really fast.  Either mini-turbos need to be toned down or  get taken out of the game.  Game gets to be like a high level tournament in a horribly balanced fighting game at times.

...Mini-Turbo?

EDIT: Oh, and I agree Perm, the only character I've been beaten by ever since I've been using Waluigi in the Zipper (that's what the bike deally is called, right?) is R.O.B.  I have yet to unlock him, so yeah.

If by mini-turbo, you mean power sliding, it was one of the best additions to Mario Kart.  I still can't snake with the best of 'em.  Snaking takes a lot of skill.  If you are a bad snaker, you will go much slower than someone who doesn't snake at all.  I liken it to wave-dashing in SB.  Yes, it can be viewed as "cheap" but it takes a lot of skill to pull off, so why isn't it just viewed as better skill?

Yeah, because light karts should be able to completely dominate.  My problem isn't necessarily snaking as much as it is that it has no viable counter. (and NO, high item stats won't do crap)  And where is everyone getting the snaking = skill from?  It's not nearly that high level of a technique.

Oh, and wavedashing wasn't all of SSBM, nor did it render 95% of it's cast useless.  It ADDED to that game along with L-Canceling, shuffling, and edgeguarding, and those only scratch the surface of that game.

Snaking is a bitch. Not a bitch cause it's hard to do, it's simple. Once you get the timing right all you do it hop left, then right, etc. Not because it hurts your hands, I feel fine when doing it, but it's just because it feels so silly. When i'm hugging the inside of a corner and I see someone fly past me from boosting left and right around the outside I just go "ugh" and start snaking with them but only because I can't stand to lose. In normal races with non-snakers the most I do is powerslide several times on corners, which I consider fair because i'm on the racing line. It wouldn't be so much of a problem if the boost wasn't so insanely significant in this game.

I always sucked at Mario Kart.

That said, I'm not sure why I got Mario Kart DS.  I guess I figured it would be worth getting better at.

Once I started using Yoshi, I started cleaning up.  I'm still far from a pro, but at least I could finish 150CC without much effort.  It's the occasional cheap shots that hit me on Rainbow Road that may mess me up, but that can affect anybody.

Yoshi's good handling on the Egg 1, I guess, is what I needed to survive these races.
