European sales!

Last week in the UK (second week of GTA PSP being released)
Quote

DS - 40,000
GBA (SP & Micro) - 32,000
PSP - 12,000
PS2 - 35,000
Xbox - 5,000
GameCube - 1,500

Total numbers from France
Quote

DS - 350,000
PSP - 210,000

Spain numbers from the end of September (would be much more in favor of DS now after the Nintendogs explosion)
Quote

NDS - 200,000 sold through (approx.)
PSP - 144,000 shipped

So the DS is dominating in every single region! WITHOUT Mario Kart! Holiday sales everywhere are going to be massive.

i dont think the mainstream really cares about either system; it seems like neither the DS nor PSP are really achieving the desired sales.

having said that, the DS is still kickin some butt

Obviously the PSP hasn't become a mainstream status icon ala the Ipod like Sony probably wanted, but it definately is seen as the "cooler" more desirable system by most teens and 20 somethings. I know girls who want one for christmas just cause of "how badass it looks". One of my friends who prides himself on always having the newest and best technology didn't even know what a Nintendo DS was till last week when I was telling him to pick up a Mario Kart DS.

Nintendo has to get their product in the public conciousness, and I think Mario Kart and Nintendogs are definately gonna do alot to acoomplish that, but I'd still like to see some commercials for the system itself.

The PSP getting its ass kicked is just the fact that it's 'look how cool this is' factor is weakening by the minute, all the yupps who buy stuff to impress other probably for the big majority already bought it. And the PS-fanboys with some brains in their heads probably started thinking in the lines of 'so... any new content... that isn't a port or remake...no? well screw that, what does Sony think they can screw my ass for the third time!!, hell no!'

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and predict that of all the video game systems this Holiday season (including 360) DS will be the big winner. Or maybe the Ngage, I don't know for sure.

Ehh...the DS is reaching it's one-year birthday in what?  Six days?  If anyone doesn't know what the DS is at this point, then Nintendo's not doing their job right.

That said, the DS is shaping up to be FAR FAR more than the sparkling innovationy Game Boy I thought it would be.  Never before have I been in such a game-related financial crisis.

Yes.  The maisnstream also believes that the PSP is a digital camera, a vibrating condom, and a falafel machine.

"Yes. The maisnstream also believes that the PSP is a digital camera, a vibrating condom, and a falafel      machine."

To say people have no idea what the PSP actually is, and does... is right.  I work at Gamestop and i've had many people come in with misconceptions.  The most prevalent is, like someone else said, thinking it plays DVD's.  As soon as I tell them it doesn't play DVD and then direct them to the UMD section I can INSTANTLY see them lose all interest in the PSP after eye balling the prices of UMD's a few seconds.  Not to mention when I inform them that it can indeed store digital media off of your computer but only if you buy an expensive memory stick.... the price point is really killing Sony.

Even quite a few of the so-called tech guys who have to have the newest and the best are turned off by it.  It's just a money sink if you actually want to get any functionality out of it concerning movies and digital media off your computer.  And if people arent willing to shove out the dough for the extra their left with what.... the games?... not much of a reason to buy a PSP. Thats why the sales figures showing the DS trouncing the PSP line up exactly with what I see when im working.

Minimal Cost of PSP entry (for full functionality) - $600.00, $250.00 for the PSP, $50.00-100.00 for memory stick, 2 games + 2 movies.

Minimal Cost of DS entry (also with full functionality) - $250.00, which will get you your shiny new ds and three full price games with money to spare.

Sony needs to find a way to cut costs if they hope to compete in sales figures against the DS. In the meantime I will be playing my DS.

Just a thought, maybe the PSP is too expensive?  Everyone wants one, but at the price, it can be hard to justify.  I don't remember for sure, but I think that the PSP is basically the most expensive system on the market right now, isn't it?  Well, that's going to change this week with the launch of Xbox 360, but I don't think that will make it look any more attractive in Japan.  Maybe when all the new consoles are out, PSP will start to look cheap in comparison and will sell more over there.
That's my opinion, not yours.

According to Nintendo, in one week more than 45% of the people who have purchased Mario Kart DS have taken their game online via the free Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service.

In just one week, more than 112,000 copies of Mario Kart DS have been sold in the US. Of that number more than 52,000 unique system/game pairs have connected to the online service for Wi-Fi multiplayer gaming.

And thus we see Nintendos online philosophy start to take shape with much success.  45% penetration is HUGH! With the Big N's first effort into the online forum they completely decimated any single xbox live offering. Now thats saying something.

Well, it's Mario Kart.  I don't like racing games but even I like Mario Kart.  And it's always been a great multi-player game.  The amount of people online with it may be surprising, but if any game was ever going to get it that high, it's really no surprise that it's Mario Kart.

Then there's Animal Crossing: Wild World, a game that is appropriate for social interaction.  The DS is going to pull people online since it's free and easy.  So many already have if Mario Kart is any indication, and Animal Crossing and hopefully later games will maintain that momentum.  Metroid Prime: Hunters will get those with trigger fingers excited, hopefully, and then if the Revolution uses the same or similar system, wow.  Looks like Sony's going to appear behind in the online department now.

And with the PSP's lack of exciting games (IMO), the DS will probably continue to outsell the PSP for a while.

All I ever hear about the PSP (at least on the Internet) is how people want to emulate Super NES games (or put pornographic videos) on there.  It's not very exciting as a gaming system just looking at its own library of games.

45% is huge considering that many people won't be getting the game from their friends and family until Christmas...
