« on: December 17, 2004, 10:26:27 AM »
The name "NeoGeo" becomes a thing of the past; fans of Magician Lord cry on the inside.

SNK NEOGEO USA CONSUMER CORPORATION Changes Name to SNK PLAYMORE USA CORPORATION

Name change brings division in line with parent company consolidation

WALL, NJ. - December 17, 2004 - SNK NEOGEO USA CONSUMER CORPORATION, the US publishing arm of the SNK PLAYMORE CORPORATION, announced today that effective immediately they will be known as SNK PLAYMORE USA CORPORATION to better facilitate worldwide recognition. The name change brings the US division in line with its Japanese parent company, SNK PLAYMORE CORPORATION, which consolidated all of its divisions worldwide under one brand on November 15, 2004.

"The name may have changed, but the business model remains the same," said Ben Herman, president of SNK PLAYMORE USA CORPORATION. "SNK is and always will be about bringing great games to the marketplace."

All communication will be updated with the new name. The new website is http://www.snkplaymoreusa.com.

I just realized that the original SNK died, Sega went third party, and Microsoft entered the console business all in 2001.  I think we have an official time period for when the game industry turned to crap.

I'm sorry, no time period in which Metroid Prime 1 and 2 were released qualifies as crap.

But a period where they are soundly ignored by the general public does.

Well, you got me there.

In that case though, I nominate 1998 as the year the gaming industry turned to crap. Grim Fandango selling badly is the worst crime that has ever been perpetrated by any coalition of gamers to roam the Earth.

Ah, but Fallout 2, Starcraft, and Half-Life all came out in 1998, as well as Grim Fandango. That was a darn good year, actually.

I don't care. It's a simple equation. Grim Fandango selling badly => game industry = crap.

Let me add for the record that I love all those games. They just don't make up for Grim selling badly. That was like a stab to my heart, leaving me a broken soulless shell.

Woah, earth-shattering news.  LOOK OUT EVERYONE, I'M ADDING A NEW MIDDLE INITIAL TO MY NAME!

As for the crudification of the gaming industry, don't lose heart! For every Alien Hominid, there are a dozen Charlie's Angels.  Cruddy games may become more and more prominent, but they won't win the day.
That's my opinion, not yours.

This is like when Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs decided to change his name to "P.Diddy". Are the peasants rejoicing yet?

No matter the name, it seems SNK is a shadow of its former self. They've got balls to mention Samurai Shodown, yet they STILL haven't released part 5 in the U.S in any legal shape, way or form.

Gone is its independent, in-your-face-we-give-a-rat's-ass-about-the-mainstream of yesteryear. Oh well, I guess I'm just mad that SNK sparsely puts out games for the big N.

Wait, SNK of Japan is gone...but theres a US division now?

Are they making real new games (Other than Metal Slug Advance) or reusing animation and arranging things to make them look new?

Oh wait...
