Wi Fi = DS Live?
« on: May 16, 2004, 09:33:09 PM »
So at the E3 conference Reggie revealed Wi Fi ability.  He said its better than Online, its NoLine.  So how does this work exactly?  Is this DS Live as in Xbox Live?  Service charge?  Voice recognition able to be used as voice chat in game?

Ahhhhhhhhh too many questions, im too excited, I think im gonna pee my pants!  And not to mention the wireless lan that has a 100ft range.

Anyone have some understanding about this plz post!!!!

I'm guessing its a simple TCP/IP multiplayer... I haven't heard anything implying that there's any sort of "live" style matchmaking service, I'm thinking more like the way the original Tribes or UT worked on the PC.

For the match making, expect Gamespy to jump in.

Please excuse my ignorance, but can somebody tell me what will be needed to use the "WiFi" feature?  Do I need to have a wireless LAN setup in my room to use it or something?  All the computers in my house are connected through cables, but I'm guessing that's not good enough.  Help please.

i read that already but it didnt clear everything up for me.

As a Nintendo customer i really want to know do i need to buy anything to go online (router, service charge)?

How do i connect to hotspots?

How far can i be from the hotspot?

Will Nintendo be launching alot of hotspots?

Is WiFi the best way to go online?

YES - The built in microphone will in fact enable voice chat for online multiplayer games (for LAN games obviously you can just talk....).

I'm really surprised that no one is talking about this since this is only good thing the microphone is there for....

As for proof, if you go to Nintendo.com and go to the DS features page, it specifically says that developers can use the microphone for voice chat in online games.

YAY!........ Imagine Splinter Cell on DS....just like the Xbox version! well as good as it gets on a handheld anyway...

Not nececarily, it can be used for games like Seaman from the Dreamcast... theres tons of ways to use the Microphone not just talk to others

The WIFI and Wireless connectivity options are very interesting. I like the idea that you could detect others (How far?) with a sleep mode, start up possibly send them an IM asking them if they want to play, and play Mario Kart DS wirelessly with one cartrdige on the go... Thats just plain cool

the internet possiblities are interesting, cause if you connect to a WIFI Hot Spot, (one of the malls where i live has one) You could do the same thing but with people across the country. It will simply take companies to actually use this....  I dont know how many will

perhaps that whole aol/nintendo love deal will come into use...

or nintendo will put hot spots everywhere. I dunno, I suppose they could...just like pay all game shops to have them. That'd be interesting...

Or create hot spot bars with couches? Free places in malls where u just sit and play. Man...it'll never happen but how rad would that be?

I'm pretty sure that if Nintendo put hotspots in Gamestores, the gamestores should welcome the idea without Nintendo having to pay.  Think about it, the hotspot would bring gamers to their store, it would be like a cool little meetup or something.  Customers would likely buy from their stores if they had a hotspot.  It's all about loyalty and you know everyone in the game industry has some degree of loyalty to something.  Basically its a win win situation for Nintendo and Gamestores to have the hotspots.  But depending on how much it will cost me for a wireless lan i might just make my own hotspot or whatever (I'm still not sure if this is how it works, lol).
