First DS Game Announced
« on: May 05, 2004, 12:02:15 PM »
The first official game for the system has finally been revealed, but don't get too excited about it.

Telegames, known for the Urban Yeti GBA game, has announced its E3 lineup.  They'll have some GBA games at the show, but more importantly, they are the first company to mention a specific Nintendo DS title.

Don't be too excited about it, though, as it's simply a compilation of board and card games, from Chess, Checkers, Mahjong and Go, to Hearts, Gin Rummy, Blackjack and dozens of Solitaire variations.  There will be 28 different games in all, and counting all the different variations promised, there should be upwards of 100 ways to play when all is said and done.

The interesting thing about this pre-E3 announcement, however, is that Telegames is holding back on revealing all the features of the game because Nintendo won't let them.  The game will take advantage of some of the DS's as of yet unknown capabilities, so until Nintendo lets the cat out of the bag next week, we'll just have to speculate with what they might be.

Though I probably won't be looking forward to this specific compilation of games, I'm guessing it somehow makes use of the innovations of the DS, otherwise they'd release it on the GBA and sell more, and sooner.

Though at the same time maybe they think it'd sell more on the DS anyway than if they were to release it on the GBA because it'd be one of the few DS games near its launch...

There is in fact a game of that very type already on the GBA, I forget who made it though.  However I think the amount of games totaled to 15 tops.

Mahjong is only good when it's "that kind" of mahjong.

But Nintendo doesn't allow that type of game. They're as bad as Sony sometimes. Always keeping the little guy from getting ahead. Where's Sega when you need them?
Poor people should eat wheat!
I'm about to go punk up some 3rd parties so they don't release games on other hardware, ciao!

I wonder if they mean Mahjong as in Mah-jongg, or that other game with the same tiles, the Taipei/Shanghai games of matching pairs to reduce a stack?  I think "real" Mah-jongg, despite its similarities to card games like Rummy, hasn't ever been released in game form to mainstream North American audiences.  So I'm guessing it's the "reduce-the-stack"-type of game.

Now was Urban Yeti! any good?  It seemed really...yucky, in my opinion, and my brother told me about some commercial where somebody specially orders a copy of the game.  Bizarre.

Me guessy that the cards, game pieces, etc. will be laid out on the 2D touchscreen and a 3D opponent + special effects will appear on the other.  I hope I'm wrong, because when I write it out like that, it sounds pretty boring.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Oh come on guys- this one is ovbious.  What special features would work really well for multi-player card games (not to mention checkers and chess)?
