Will Digital Television Make New Features Available?
« on: December 11, 2003, 04:22:36 PM »
This just came to my mind but  a lot of newer tv's are going to be digital.  I was curious to the fact that on the next generation consoles if they will have features to work on the digital tv or if it will make no difference to games?  Sorry if this is just totally wrong im just curious

They already do.  A bunch of xbox games display 525P, 720P, and sometime down the line 1080P will get there (for tvs, not consoles) PS2 and Gamecube both have a bunch of 480P games, with maybe one or two 525P, just depends.

It means that the games are already taking advantage of higher resolutions (sharper objects, more detailed appearence)

P means progressive, as in the game is showing 1 frame at a time only, instead of I (interlaced) where each frame is actually a split of 2 frames.

480P would be comparable with a 640x480 computer resolution, 525P is a tad less than 800x600, 720P is about 1028x768 and 1080P will be around 1280x1024.

Dude, 720P would be 1280 x 720 b/c it is a widescreen format, and 1080i would be 1920 x 1080 (also widescreen).  1080P pretty much doesn't exist because there are only a few TV's that can even display it, and as far as I know It's not even an ATSC standardized resolution.  And, yes, all the new game systems will support all of these standards.  Digital TV is definitely catching on and more and more people get HDTV's everyday, so they will certainly support the resolutions.  1080i will probably be the most common I would guess, as it has been so far with most HDTV broadcasts.

As far as making new features availbale for games,  I don't see how.  They will just be higher resolutions.
spiral out. keep going.
