The arcade discussion thread
« on: October 29, 2003, 05:04:41 PM »
I was thinking, I have a whole lot to post about arcades. Being one of the few several-times-a-week regulars for two years, and then a 'customer service' goon, I've noticed quite a few things.

I'm starting to see a new trend, maybe like fighting games back in the mid-90s, that brought people out in droves to play play play and make arcades hot again. I'm referring to what I call a "leveling" game - people will come back constantly and even play for lots and lots of time to level up a character in Soul Calibur II's conquest mode (which is MUCH different from the console version's, for the uninformed) or a character in Gauntlet II. I hear there's another horse racing game or something that has stat-building which I hear is a pretty hot earner. Personally, I don't care to get caught up in what I consider a token-spending contest, or a stat building contest. (Also I loathe all online rpgs, despite having tried time and time again to enjoy them)

I mean, it might sound silly to you too, but people get ADDICTED. Not just like teenagers and college kids, but even OLD people play SC2 and Gauntlet here. Like, in their 40's. It's bizarre.

If this catches on, remember who CALLED IT, UNGH

Arcade fun facts:

Ticket redemption games still bring in an obnoxious take. We have this one, Wonder Wheel, where you just put a token in and try to shoot it into some doodad. I've seen a birthday party full of kids sink like 200 tokens in that thing in an hour.

Sometimes initials for high scores are pretty quirky. Some censor rude phrases, some don't. Sometimes they censor bizarre things like 'AUM' (MVC2 does - I happen to know why, I'm curious to see if anyone else does). Sometimes, hilarious things happen with default high scores, like in Time Crisis 3. On the Time Crisis 3, one of the 'filler' high scores is for Wild Dog and Wild Fang, which, thanks to Namco's hilarious slip-up, was DOG & and not FNG, but rather a hilarious slur that gets a lot of people banned from the chat.

Since Midway shut down their arcade division, it costs hundreds of dollars more than it should to get a silly replacement part for Hydro Thunder. : (

I wish there was an arcade around here worthy of Super's.  The most recent they HAD was Soul Calibur 2, whcih they traded for... wait for it...

Konami's TotalVice.  The Second worst  light gun shooter after CarnEvil.  And they also got rid of Crazy Taxi for...  Off-Road Challenge.  It's like they want their arcade to go down in flames.

Yeppo. I see old dudes (ie: in their 30's.. HAHA, WATCH OUT OLD MAN!) hogging the Initial D arcade machines all the time, with their fancy card inserted in the machine, racing for money to buy another car and save it to the card and complete this long sentence. What's scary is I'll sometimes see the same guy on the machine an hour later. Woah, buy it on PS2 or something old man.

If I wanna go to an arcade that actually gets new machines in, it's a half hour ++ train trip. The arcade here, their last 'new' machine in was Metal Slug 3. But they got rid of it 2 weeks later, and replaced it with Point Blank. Complete with broken gun. Clap clap... ;__;

well, i can't even find an arcade around here, which sucks because they are great, the two we had in newcastle were pretty cool, one had Metal Slug 2 (RSI IS FUN!) and the other had MvC2, their best games, they both had TC2 i think, but that game can go away, gimme metal slug anyday, ohyeah one of them has/had/hopefully still has, Wild and Lucky! its some funky old school racing/shooting game, i absolutly love it and want to get the machine for my home

driving around backwards and annoying total strangers in daytona is fun

Man, I haven't been to an arcade in about 2 years...Though I do remember having some great fun playing Gauntlet with friends...

Where I live now the only arcades are in places like Franky's Fun Park and Putt-Putt...and the stuff there is crap...*sigh*

I remember Wild 'n Lucky, that game was awesome, it combined the best of being old school and COMPLETELY INSANE.

There's some Bemani that haven't come out on any home consoles, like Dance Maniax (and DMX2) and I don't know if Pop N Music or Mambo A-Go-Go have come out on anything either.

P. S. support your local arcade

I have to agree with SUPER about fighting games coming back.  My local arcade has CVS 2, MvC 2, and both bring in very large crowds.  However, SF3 is also present, but doesn't seem generate much of a crowd.(SF3 is much different fighting game then the "versus" series.)

I wish I could find HotD 3.  I 've beaten the first one many times.  It's a great game if you can find it.

Funny thing is, some of the best games are found in hotels.  I've spent alot of time on Samurai Showdown 2 at a local hotel.

The arcades around here are crap.  yea.

I'm kind of one of those ticket maniac things SUPER was blabbing about (not as extreme, though).  But last time I went I was like, "even the crap is too expensive!" and then I noticed that the ticket games are NOT FUN.  Unfortuanatley, most arcades round here have mostly ticketers. ;__;

The NoE boards censor "Speed". Looks quite funny when someone refers to "Need for *****: Underground"...

I used to love going to the arcade.  I didn't usually have much money but it was a fun atmosphere and if I did have some quarters I'd play some multiplayer beat-em-ups like X-Men or some fighting games.  I stopped going to arcades mainly because of one thing: every game now costs a dollar.  The only games I ever see that are a quarter are always at least ten years old.  Everything newer than that is at least fifty cents and everything current is a buck.  That's partially why I think arcades are dying.  What could play me FORTY games during the days of Street Fighter II now can only play me ten or fifteen games.  Plus if it's a new game that I haven't played yet I'm more willing to risk wasting 25 cents than a whole dollar.

Console games are cheaper now than ten years ago.

Arcade games are more expensive now than ten years ago.

Do the math.

I think it equals seven but I suck at math.

But what you say is true, arcade games just cost too damned much.  I go there and I'm like, "Wowee.......

Well, once I got settled in to my arcade, I've been able to play for several lengthy sessions on 20 bux. Unless it's comedy GameWorks or in the Metreon or something, it isn't really expensive. You just needa find a 'bulk' token plan, and also not waste tokens on ticket game nonsense or continuing nonstop through a really hard game (olol I've seen guys put in like 10 bucks in Time Crisis 3 or Silent Scope in as many minutes).

Also, when I buy in bulk, 2 tokens equal about 30 cents, which is LESS expensive than arcades EVER were if you take inflation into account. I WIN THIS ROUND, ECONOMICS!!1

Time Crisis 3? 10 Bucks? I can do that game in two credits. One if I knuckle down more. Silent scope is a different story though. More about memorization and getting that lucky head shot on the boss than anything else.

couple of arcade style questions, aside from F-Zero AX is anything else slated to use the Tri-Force arcade board? and is Donkey Konga going to get an arcade release? possibly with a bigger drumkit, like 4 bongos or what ever, not that any of this would effect me we only have two AX machines in australia, one of which is in New Zealand but would be interesting to know

Time Crisis 3???  The only place I can play that is at a local movie theater in at a dollar a pop.  If I'm having a good night I go along ways on five dollars.

Though finding any Tri-force/X-Box based arcade games are nearly impossible.  Does HotD 3 even exist??  Owe well, finding a good version of SS a tough enough.

Yeah, HOTD3 has been out and about, but I haven't seen one in person.
