Flickering GBA SP screen?
« on: June 07, 2003, 02:05:24 AM »
Problem:
Under direct sunlight the screen of my GBA SP seems to flicker. Its like looking on a monitor with poor refresh rate. Most noticeable is this effect on grayish colors, overlay elements (borders of menus etc), and some high contrast areas (like black meets white).
(Most noticeable in Castlevania Aria of Sorrow)
On a place with poor lightening condition, I mean when the backlight is stronger than other lightsources the screen/colors etc. are just perfect.

I just wonder, isn't the GBA screen supposed to look the best under direct sunlight? Is this a 'normal behaviour'?

Did you try turning the light off? Because if you have a direct light source like the sun, you don't need the light on.

I have never seen a single GBA do this.  Truthfully I'm starting to grow suspicious of all these "my GBA/GC doesn't work" posts.  Personally I think this post is a crock, and unless you can prove what you are saying, well....

How bout this?

Why don't you just call Nintendo. If it's a GBA:SP it should still be under warranty.  I play mine outside every day, in blazing California sunlight, and I have not had a single problem.

I've already shown my gba sp (running Castlevania under direct sunlight of course) to various people which also own a gba sp and they all confirmed the existence of this "display error" on my gba.

BTW how should I proove it in this forum? <sarcasm> Should I take photos, film the flickering elements with a digi cam, or send the handheld to you? </sarcasm>
I just asked for opinions, maybe I am not used to the gab screen and this behaviour is normal, maybe someone had the same problems.

Already tried this, and there is no difference between  "light on" and "light off". I mean the screen or parts of the screen are still flickering under direct sunlight.

Thanks, at least you confirmed that this kind of behaviour/ error doesn't occur on your gba SP. I'll return the machine to the shop where I bought it (already informed the seller about this issue).

Sorry if I seem a bit cynical.  It's not meant as hostility directed towards you.  It's just seems that a ton of hate-filled 10 year old fan boys seem to get off by coming into rival boards and saying "my game system doesn't work"
When really all they are doing is blowing smoke.  I'm sorry to hear about you problem and I hope you return that sucker ASAP.

No problem... as you realized I did not disapprove the gba. On the contrary I had a lot of fun with my GBA SP and the two games I already own (Tactics Ogre, Castlevania Aria of Sorrow, soon I'll get Golden Sun 1 and 2)

Today I brought it back to the shop. Unfortunally I have to wait around 1 month for the replacement. The machine will be send to Nintendo, get repaired/replaced and send back... (Wish Nintendo would handle the matter as indifferent as a certain 'big home entertaiment selling company' which simply replace the old unit with a new machine regardless the defect. But oh well I can live without SP for a while *g*)

i have 2 sp's and it is completely normal for lcds to do this, like your pc, a laptop, a handheld device, even the nokia n gage does this, this is completely normal. there is no display flaw on this, besides you can only see it when under direct sunlight right? well if it isnt hindering you from having a pleasant gameplay then it isnt a problem is it?
