The Wii U eShop has definitely been blessed with some classy shoot'em ups. The latest title to enter the genre is XType Plus from PhobosLab, which proves to be another successful outing in the genre. The developer uses Nintendo Web Framework to bring their vision to life, which has certainly been done before. XType, however, sets a fantastic example for using HTML5 to the fullest and it is the most successful attempt to date.
XType Plus is a traditional twin stick shooter setup, making it simple to pick up and play. Players can use their preferred controller too as the Wii U GamePad, the Wii U Pro Controller and the Wii Classic Controller (Pro) are supported. Sadly, the Wii U GamePad does not support off-TV Play, which is a bit of a bummer.
The game offers two distinct modes for you to experience: Classic Mode and Plus Mode. Both of these modes are pretty fun, though the bosses always have the same shapes and attachments. This feels a bit repetitive, but the growing difficulty does make kind of make up for it.
XType Plus has some smart implementations as far online is concerned. You can compare scores with friends and everybody else who is playing the game. Better yet, you can watch replays from the playthroughs of others. What I truly loved about XType Plus is how the game looked. It is a simple yet neat looking neon style, giving it great visual appeal. Add to that the electronic soundtrack that is heart pounding and the game really comes together.
XType Plus is a fun, cheap shoot 'em up that will both challenge and excite players. While the enemies don't have much variation, the game does make it up with smooth controls and addictive gameplay to boot. The game would have benefited from off-TV Play, that being said though, if you are ready for some highscore action then XType will truly delight you.
