Switching to another new direction in the Zelda franchise.
Following the announcements that the Wii U versions of Yooka Laylee and Stardew Valley would be canceled in favor of a release on the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo has announced that "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild," will also no longer be releasing on the Wii U.
In a press release Nintendo stated that "Due to ongoing technical issues with the Wii U version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, we have decided to focus our development of the game on a single platform. It was a difficult decision but we believe that this newfound focus on a single platform will allow us to ensure that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will meet the expectations of our fans. With that said we wish to apologize to those who were looking forward to the Wii U version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and we thank you for understanding this decision."
This news makes the Wii U the first Nintendo console not to receive an original mainline Zelda title since the Virtual Boy. Nintendo did not make any comment on whether or not they still planned to release The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in 2017.
