Smash Bros. 3DS Not Compatible with Circle Pad Pro
« on: September 07, 2014, 08:40:16 AM »

New information on the control options for the upcoming 3DS title.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/38435/smash-bros-3ds-not-compatible-with-circle-pad-pro

The Circle Pad Pro accessories, for older 3DS models, will not be compatible with the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game on 3DS. Despite this, the latest portable Smash Bros. game will take advantage of the C-Stick found on New Nintendo 3DS models.

Information regarding the New Nintendo 3DS enhanced features for Smash Bros. was revealed by Iwata in the latest Japanese Nintendo Direct. The news about the lack of Circle Pad Pro support was discovered on a Japanese game compatibility list provided by Nintendo for the accessory.

There is currently no word if Smash Bros. will make use of the additional shoulder buttons on New Nintendo 3DS platforms.

And yet, the Wii U version supports 37 different controllers.

And this same functionality has already been touted as a feature of the New 3DS, using the "C-Stick" for Smashes.

Nintendo: supporting their own accessories since...never.  But hey, I'm suuuuure the Amiibos are going to be that rare exception.

I don't even care about the C-stick for Smash attacks. The Circle Pad Pro is just more comfortable to hold. The extra shoulder buttons mimic how I typically play Super Smash Bros. I use the right shoulder buttons almost exclusively. I'm not entirely sure why; I've always just played that way. Maybe it's because the GameCube controller didn't have a left Z-button counterpart. I'm hoping it gets patched it. I'm not holding my breath though. Nintendo begrudgingly released it for Monster Hunter 4. Makes sense even though they'd rather it didn't exist.

And yet, the Wii U version supports 37 different controllers.

Well the Wii U version is the main game that seems to be getting the most attention.  If the leak screen shot of the select screen is the final stage count, the 3DS version has less stages then Brawl did and several series just reuse their Melee or Brawl stages without getting anything new.  Despite the fact all of these franchises, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, Sonic, Wario and Metriod have handheld games Sakurai could have easily made a stage from.

Plus it's looking pretty likely at this point the 3DS version won't have a Event mode or Stage Builder either.  If those are in the Wii U version along with the other modes except Smash Run which was said to be 3DS exclusive, the 3DS version is looking to be pretty half-assed in the end.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is why they really wanted the 3DS version to come first and why we haven't heard of the Wii U versions modes yet.  After the Wii U version is fully revealed, the 3DS is going to look like a scam in comparison.
I’m gonna have you play every inch of this game! - Masahiro Sakurai

Good thing I was never planning on getting this for the 3DS. No support does suck though as the CPP is good for improving the ergonomics.

Kinda weird as Sakurai is usually all about the control options.

Maybe patch?

We won't support this accessory that works with your existing 3DS but if you want c-stick smashes you can buy a whole new system!

Could they be more obvious?  I really hope this New 3DS is a massive bomb.

Like DSi, New 3DS may underperform as people just treat it as a regular 3DS. I can't see it bombing. I can't see it being a resounding success either.

I doubt many people will buy New 3DS for C-stick Smash attacks. By the time New 3DS is even released outside of Japan, the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. will be out. Even if it supported the Circle Pad Pro, it'd still be the worse version of the game.

Somehow I was expecting this. I have my doubts that any NEW 3DS games will be compatible with the CPP, and I doubt CPP games will work with the extra inputs of the NEW 3DS.

It may be possible that it's more of a super gameboy/gbc dynamic where the NEW 3DS is backwards compatible with CPP games but games designed for the NEW 3DS may not always work with the CPP.

MH4u still has CPP support I believe.
