Chode, I am one of those people who is old enough to have played on a console when they were young and now has kids who play.  I think that maybe some people in my position are buying GC more for it being familiar rather than nostalgic.  I say this because when you look back to the OLD systems (not really N64) the style of the games were way different.  2D side scrolling style.  It is a big jump to what games are like now.  I will admit that  the first time a played a 3D game on my computer I hated it.  I really wanted the old SNES type stuff again.  Having said that, I was finally won over and went with Gamecube because I was looking forward to new Mario and Zelda titles.

As far as the 12-20 year old gap, I guess I'll see firsthand at some point.  My son is 8 and likes Gamecube.  He has a friend who has a Playstation (not sure if it's 1 or 2) but he is still happy with GC.  At least he can be sure that when he asks for a game for Christmas or b-day his parents know what it is.

EDIT:  Also, if it does turn out to be true about losing interest in the teen years, then at least in a few years he'll stop bugging me for his turn when I play, and when he moves out at 18 or so the whole system we will have built by then will be mine!

I remember when i was in high school, the big argument was SNES vs. Genesis.  (i'm that damn old)  We used to fight tooth and nail over it.  The funny thing was after the dreamcast went into the crapper, some of my friends couldnt stomach buying Nintendo, so they went to Sony.  These were dudes in their mid 20's, still harboring feelings about a system war 6 or 7 years prior.  I have always been on the Nintendo bandwagon. But i've enjoyed sevral other systems over the years, so i'm semi-open.  I think when you reach 14 or 15, things get pretty much set in stone on what name brand you prefer, and it becomes part of who you are.  Which is why Nintendo is losing big time in the teenage demographic.  A 15 year old kid , 6 years ago was 9, and grew up with PLaystation.  Then they get the Playstation 2, and the Sony name is what theyre familiar with.  So its a big hurdle....and if none if this made sense, i apologize...i did have a point somewhere...
