Share Your Personal Gaming Anecdotes

I thought of a funny story from my childhood earlier today and felt like sharing.

One day as a kid, I was at the mall with my family. I think it was 1995 and I was 8. My dad took me inside the KB Toy store and told me to pick out a SNES game. Awesome! For whatever reason, I decided to buy the Mighty Max game (an easy mistake in the pre-internet-game-review era). I took it to the counter and I'll never forget what the clerk said to me. He took a look at the game and said "Let me be honest. This isn't a great game. You want a great game? Buy this instead." He presented me with a new copy of Super Metroid and started explaining the cool powerups, bosses and graphics. I was sold!

Now I'm not sure why he felt the need to interject with a father buying his son a game, but God bless him for doing it. Super Metroid is one of my all time favorite games. I've beaten it countless times and have picked up every other game in the series since then.

To you, Unknown KB Toys Clerk from 1995, thank you. You have added something positive to this world. We need more people like you.

Anybody else have strange or interesting gaming related anecdotes like this one?

Me and a buddy had rented Xmen Legends 2 for the Gamecube. We had just reached the third level and we stopped to get snacks from the kitchen. When we were in the kitchen, One of our controllers slipped off the couch onto the carpeted floor face down. We watched in horror and amazement as the controller exited the game to the title screen, Selected the saved games and deleted our save file, even clicking the a button to confirm.

My buddy threw up his hands and refused to start the game over. It was really bizarre.

My story isn't that interesting, but it's probably the best gaming experience I've ever had.

Now, I always have a habit of getting spoiled with most video games, movies, books, and TV shows before I watch them. This is one reason why I tend to buy games ASAP and watch films in theaters instead of waiting for home video release. However, for The Last of Us, I managed to stay unspoiled, mainly due to the fact that I went home after the midnight release and stayed up two hours to play the beginning.

Spoilers for The Last of Us below.

Imagine for second: one o'clock in the morning, with the creepiness of the opening playing as Sarah in the house, transitioning to the car ride and the running through the city and eventually her death. The emotions that the game was designed to make you feel was heightened due to the darkness and the fact that I didn't expect it whatsoever. This feeling persisted throughout the game, since I happened to beat it the same day once I woke up in the morning. It was a rollercoaster ride of emotions and it left me impressed the whole way through. I feel as if my experience with the opening definitely made me enjoy the game even more than I had already done so.

Boring story, I know, but it sounded better in my head.

Sounds like a great experience. You'll probably look back on that game fondly for years and years. Cool stuff.
