NSMB U director says level editor is possible!
« on: December 27, 2012, 10:38:11 PM »
I found this on GoNintendo.

Quote from: Masataka Takemoto
“I think the Coin Edit feature in Coin Battle is a step closer to that. There is a possibility of this happening in the future, but there’s no use just blindly making that feature available. We would need to carefully think about how to make such a system work. The important thing is that it has to be something that is uniquely Nintendo. Where a beginner can easily make something and have a good time, and simultaneously, someone who is really into Mario can delve into it deeper and make something more complex. So that is a challenge we will need to tackle in the future.” - Masataka Takemoto, director

What's wrong with just cramming a level editor in the game for people to tinker with? It worked with the Mario vs DK games for the DS.

When I knew the Wii U's GamePad would feature a giant touchscreen, a Mario game with a level editor was the first thing I thought of.

Microsoft lets you create levels for Halo games while charging $8 for 3 maps.

Not that simple.

They would have to design a system where you can see other peoples levels, search all the levels made by a specific user and have a spot for featured levels that are enjoyable, for experts etc.

Then they would need some kind of cloud storage for it where you can upload a number of levels and people could download them.

A level designer is one thing but then there's all that other stuff behind it.

Was it Mario Paint that let you make music levels?

I don't think we'll see it because Nintendo are probably worried it'd prevent some people from buying new Mario games. If we do see one, it will be something incredibly simple, like SSBBrawl's editor, and not be worthwhile.

With any other company I'd agree with you. All those things you mentioned are absolutely essential for a level editor to have any real relevance. As this is Nintendo, however, I have a feeling that we're likely to see something much less auspicious should they decide to go ahead with this idea. We still don't have online multiplayer or proper leaderboards for the challenge modes in NSMB U for crying out loud (and I don't want to hear any excuses about how NSMB multiplayer can only be truely enjoyed locally).
Gouge away.

I wouldn't say levels, but you could make music..

You could also make animations but I barely see any of those (at least anything as wonderful as the music) on youtube. I wonder, is it because the animating tools weren't that good compared to the composition tools, or do people just suck? :P

While there is no excuse for them not adding it, I still think on-line multi for NSMB wouldn't feel the same and thus be less enjoyable. That is a personal opinion though.
****, I can't even enjoy local multiplayer if I'm not playing with the right people

The "Mario vs DK" games on Nintendo DS/DSi do all that already. People seem to forget about those games.
