Iwata Hints at Possible DLC Content for Mario
« on: February 07, 2012, 07:19:38 PM »

The two biggest 3DS releases could be expanded upon.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/29149

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata mentioned the possible idea of paid DLC for their big-name releases at their Corporate Management Policy Briefing/Third Quarter Financial Results Briefing.

Iwata explained, highlighting Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7, how some existing titles could have potentially strong lifespans and how it could benefit Nintendo. Regarding the question of whether players would get bored of their games, Iwata said "What if we could provide add-on content through the network?" Iwata explained that this initiative would provide new profit for the company by further extending the replay value of existing titles, thus reducing the notion of a game being "old." He used Super Mario as an example of how new levels could be added. He also mentioned that a title like Wii Fit Plus could simply be an update to Wii Fit with their new network infrastructure.

The recently announced 2D Mario game for the 3DS may also benefit from the DLC initiative, but nothing was confirmed by Nintendo.

Not unless Nintendo added in the hooks for the games to look for add-on content/software patches.  I am pretty sure that they did not do this during the development of their current batch of first party titles.  A missed opportunity - especially for MK7.  New tracks and a patch to eliminate the Wuhu Loop glitch would have been nice.

Im just going to call it now... The new "2D Mario Game for 3DS" is going to flip the formula of what we saw In Mario 3D Land.

Rather then a 2D style Mario game (with flag pools, a run button, a time limit, and a very linear style to it) In a 3D game space.

I can only hope and pray that this next Mario game we will be in a 2D game space collecting multiple stars on each level... (maybe that might be a little awkward in a 2D space... but perhaps it can be done well), have a health meter,  and even though it is 2D have more depth then New Super Mario Brothers series.

I think what I and a lot of other people are looking for is an experience more like the one had in Super Mario World! With a big world map! And like having to find keys to access secret levels! Just a bunch of things from that game! It was after all kinda sorta the link between normal 2D and 3D mario. SO I really hope thats what is going to happen.... Anyone with me?

OHh then relating to this article! Just add DLC to add extra islands or something to give more levels!... or something. I don't know. haha but it would be pretty amazing!  :D

I'm calling it now: the Mario Kart Seven DLC will be the monthly challenge tracks. To my knowledge, those are still being released on Mario Kart Wii, almost 3 years after launch.

They stopped being new ones about two years ago, though. Also, I'm pretty sure that all of the tournaments are actually on the disc, and just become available during each tournament period, so they may not technically be DLC. It's also been 3 years, 10 months since the game came out.
