Soul Calibur 2 Artwork - Next Gen Cel-shading?

For those of you who haven't seen the two new pieces of Link art for Soul Calibur 2, click the link.

Now this is pure speculation and daydreaming, but I would love it if cel-shading on next-gen systems could make a Zelda game that looks like that.  It would look "cool" enough and you could probably avoid having to get too realistic with things.

I've always wanted next gen cel-shaded to be able to create the kind of art seen in the Ocarina of Time official artwork.

What if the bosses in the next Zelda game actually looked like that? I've been wanting that ever since the whole cel-shading thing came up. Cel-shading is not a bad idea...instead of childish anime, why not use cel-shading to make the next Zelda game look like Ocarina of Time was meant to be?

It's amazing how they manage to show every aspect of the female body in those pictures and still keep them Everyone to Teen rated. . .

It doesn't really matter to me, but yes, that would be cool.

You can't rate something T or M just because the females in that game have their "proper parts"....That's like rating Sesame Street TV14 because the women have breasts. o_O

I saw the images of Link from Soul Caliber on the PGC home page. As a matter of fact I made 1024x768 wallpapers out of them and the pic. of Astaroth (the dude with the big axe) if anyone is interested, let me know.

Looking at the way the Link art is drawn, I'd say you'd never try to use cel-shading to produce visuals like that.  It'd have to be something like "pencil-shading" or similar, cuz cel-shading sure as hell wasn't meant for that, it's meant to imitate cel painting animation via solid flat color shades.  To be practical, cel-shading would be appropriate for anime styles and the artwork used for GB Zeldaracle games.

The only place I see for cel-shading in those Link pictures would only be to draw thin (insignificantly thin) body outlines--and that's all.  The rest of him could be achieved through lighting, shadowing, and dirt mapping.

I too would love to see Adult Link represented in that style.  Although I don't think that Professional got his definition of Cel Shading down pat, he is correct that that level of stuff would be insanely difficult to do via cel shading.  In the realm of possibility maybe... but I still don't think it would look that good.

Hey, games like Star Fox Adventures, Half Life 2, etc. would be "insanely difficult" to do too...about 6 years ago during the age of the PSX, N64, and when TNT2 powered PC's were all the rage.

Hey, just wait till the next systems come out. If first generation cel shading can look as good as it does, I don't see why second generation cel shading couldn't look that great. After all, we are only in the 2nd generation of 3D console games and look at games like Halo 2...
