Pokédex 3D FAIL
« on: July 24, 2011, 07:08:38 PM »

You might never actually catch 'em all.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blog/27251

My Pokédex 3D stopped downloading Pokemon the other day. This was a complete surprise, since I'd scanned every AR Marker available on the Internet back when the app first came out, and I was getting three Pokémon a day: two in the morning, one after work. It ran like clockwork, until yesterday. Yesterday, my 3DS got no Pokémon, despite missing four of the elemental monkeys and several different forms of existing Pokémon, like Deering or Sawbuck. Some internet research turned up some annoying findings: without other people who also have Pokédex 3D, I'll never have a complete Unova Pokédex.

Turns out, there are certain Pokémon you can only have one form of, or one kind of, and the rest you have to get by trading with friends (with the "Give/Receive" function in the menu). Here's a list of Pokémon that you'll only get one form of:

Deering, Sawbuck, Frillish, Jellicent, and Unfezant

That leaves three versions of Deering and Sawbuck, and one version each of the other three for you to get by trading. Furthermore, you'll only get one of the elemental monkeys and its evolution. I got Pansear and Simisear, but if I want Pansage, Panpour, Simisear, and Simipour, I'm gonna have to go do some beggin'. Finally, and this is the best part, you'll never get six Pokemon through SpotPass--you have to get them by scanning AR markers: Victini, Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizian, Reshiram, and Zekrom. It's not difficult to find an AR Marker website, so don't fret, but it's still a raw deal.

I understand this is Nintendo's way of adding typical Nintendo trading functionality to this useless app, but in North America, especially ALASKA, it's just not gonna happen. I can only hope these missing forms are downloadable via SpotPass in the future, because I hate to see missing Pokémon in my 3D Pokédex.

This would be my PSN Trophy Card, but I guess I can't post HTML in my Signature. I'm the pixel spaceship, and I have nine Gold trophies.

This is BS, I don't know anyone else who even has a 3DS. So there is no way I will ever complete it (not that it will bug me much since it's a lame app anyways), but this sucks. They should at least let you do those online.

I guess I'm lucky that I live in WA and will be going to PAX later in August.  I'm sure there'll be enough 3DS owning nerds there that I'll be able to complete mine.

Alternatively, I could probably try Gamestop.  The staff all had their 3DS systems with them when I went to get OoT3D and I was able to get some StreetPass tags in the process.  I could probably get some Pokemon trades as well if they aren't too busy.

As for it being BS, at least it's better than it was in all the Game Boy iterations of the game where getting them all not only required knowing someone else who had the system and the other color of the game, but one of you needed a link cable as well.  I dunno, maybe it just doesn't bother me as much because Red was the only game I actually played.

With the real games, all you needed was another copy of the game and another system. By the time each Pokemon game came out, it was cheap to get another system (if you didn't have one) and another copy of the game. With this, you need another 3DS (not cheap) at the very least.

Zach I sort of feel the same way about puzzle panels in mii streetpass plaza. I got all the panels, but not all the pieces. I would have NEVER gotten the panels if I didn't go to anime-con because they are IMPOSSIBLE to get without street pass. Now that I have all the panels it seems impossible for me to finish one, I keep getting repeats and its very frustrating when I have two panels with only a piece to finish and it gets the wrong thing. One day I got two repeats, of the same piece !!!! Totally wasteful.

I goofed around with pokedex for like 20 minutes and said it wasn't worth it and deleted it.

OHHHH. I was wondering why it sort of stopped dead in the tracks. and that I couldn't get Pansear and Simisear for the life of me.

In fact, you might need at least four 3DSes and luck that they all get different forms (unless wiping data on a second system is enough). Either way, it's not worth the trouble. I guess I can trade whenever I'm at another gaming event.
On a side note, I can see why the Pokemon look so good in this app. Their data weighs in at around 1/2 MB each if you look at your SD card! They take up a pretty significant chunk of space.

I can't believe people actually do this for fun.

It takes about 30 seconds total to check the app 3 times, not that much effort. Scanning the AR Marker's is different.

3 a day x 50 just to find out some Pokeymon information that could've been posted on the internet.

People pay to download iOS sports stats apps despite that info being online for free. It's about convenience. I wouldn't have paid for Pokedex 3D, but I can't complain too much since it's free.

Despite where  you live, urban or otherwise, I think one thing we have to keep in mind is that the 3DS is still very young- For North Am, we're just barely finishing 4 months in the 3DS life cycle, if you can believe that.  There's barely 5 million 3DS's out there right now?  Imagine 2  years from now, with quite a few more 3DS's out there, the social stuff will really take off.

Oh yeah, I know I have 2 sealed copies of that game.   1 is for trading.  But people who collect Amiibos?  They really have a problem!
