Nintendo will be hosting a massive launch event in New York City, starting on Saturday, March 26, 2011 and concluding on Sunday with the release of the 3DS. The events start at 9:00pm, where attendees waiting in line will be able to try out the 3DS for the first time. The first 300 people in line will receive a special 3DS carrying case.
At 9:45pm, Nintendo President Reggie Fils-Aime will arrive at the event, where he will greet the players waiting in line (Nintendo expects the numbers to be above 1,200 people). At 11:00pm, Fils-Aime will be lifted to atop the crowd using a hydraulic stage where the countdown clock to the 3DS release will appear. Just before the clock strikes 12, attendees will throw their 3D glasses up into the air, symbolizing the fact that players won't need glasses in order to enjoy 3D visuals on the new handheld.
At midnight, the 3DS will be sold, with the Best Buy store remaining open till 2:00am. The event has been hailed as one of the biggest system launches since the Wii in 2006. In honor of the release, the Empire State Building will be lighted in red as well.
