3DS Shop Channel Shown at Investors Meeting
« on: October 29, 2010, 08:29:24 PM »

Some video showing the Shop Channel equivalent for 3DS.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/24373

Part of the presentation at today's Nintendo Operational Briefing showed a video example of the Shop Channel for Nintendo 3DS.

Mario, Donkey Kong, Dr. Mario, and utilities such as the Mario Clock are shown in the clean new interface. The video also shows a Super Mario Land video loaded and played from the service.

See below for a portion of the Briefing, including the Shop Channel demonstration.

Nintendo has learned from previous mistakes and is really hitting the 3DS out of the park. What's next NO friend codes and built in voice chat in all online games?

I had always speculated that Nintendo was going to implement some kind of Skype communication system into the 3DS for online play. Also, will the 3DS store be as slow and cumbersome as that of the DSishop?

Was the DSi's worse than the Wii's?  Please tell me that that's not possible.

Exactly how was the DSi/Wii Shop channel bad? It's not perfect (Live Arcade has a better shop, obviously), but it gets the job done.

It's slow.  and shifting though the available titles is a chore.  I'm guessing you've never used it?

Le's say I'm flipping though the $2 titles on DSiWare.  It loads the first two.  Click, then it loads the next two.  Click.  Next two.  Repeat until you find the title you want.  Click like three or four times to confirm the download/purchase.  Wait.  Wait.  Wait. Yay!  Download successful.  What?  You want to download another game?  Okay, go back into the $2 titles.  Load the first two again.  Already seen those?  Tough.  Click.  Next two.  Etc., etc.

Dear Nintendo, please give me a faster, cleaner way to select to purchase multiple products and download them at one time.

Of course, you probably shouldn't listen to me.  I'm still boycotting WiiWare/DSiWare.
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

The Wii's shop is incredibly slow and the download times are awful.  I can download a SNES ROM in seconds.  Why does it take the Wii shop channel 5 minutes to do the same thing?

To be fair, Virtual Console purchases include a customized emulator with each ROM, so you are downloading much more data from the Wii Shop Channel. It's still not that much, though.

From what I can tell in the video, the user isn't playing Super Mario Land, but rather watching a video from the store itself. That's a great feature to have.

Hopefully they got rid of that GB Limit developers have to use.

edit: They are also gonna show the actual sales of the titles in the info page?
that's pretty cool, no more wondering how a game is doing or if it's even popular.
you might even be more inclined to try a game once you see 1million other people have already downloaded it too.

That's chockful of good news.  Videos, player info, and web site access straight from the Shop Channel?  Yes, please.  And that consumer tryout event at an exhibition hall nearly two months before release is a great harbinger of things to come out west, as it hopefully means NOA is planning a similar thing in large markets sometime before March.  Hmm -- Can a "harbinger" be positive, or is it only a bringer of doom?  Either way, I love this drip of 3DS info out of Japan.  Keeps the urges fed until 3/2011.

The trailer function and user comments function will be very helpful when browsing 3DSware. Occasionally, I see games on the DSi Shop that look potentially interesting, but with nothing to go on, I usually pass on them. A quick glimpse in a video might be all it needs to get me to consider purchasing it.

Hmmm, overall this looks good, but there's still no sign of playable demos. I guess I shouldn't be surprised--Nintendo seems philosophically opposed to them for their own games and is therefore uninterested in implementing such an option for third parties.

Actually a direct translation of the presentation says downloading Demos, but the translator left that word out for some reason.
This was confirmed by AndriaSang who helped to translate the text:

When we activate the shop for Nintendo 3DS, you will see the arrays of shelves by the themes. How to shift from one icon to another has become smoother, as you can see.
There are multiple software titles on the shelves sorted by their themes.
When you select a software title, you will see such options as checking the software details, watching a trailer, downloading a demo, and reading the users’ comments.
When you select the game’s details, just like you do with Nintendo Channels on Wii, you will see an explanation of the game and how long the existing players have been playing with the software and with what frequency. Directly from here, you can also visit the official website for that software.
When you select the movie option, you will see introductions of the content, such as trailers, before purchasing the software.
Other than the shelves for the software, there are places where you can see a list of the latest software or a list of the best-selling titles. You can search for your preferred software, and you can express your support for some software if you’d like to recommend it to other people.

With Nintendo 3DS, in addition to expanding the packaged software sales, we are aiming to pursue the new possibilities of digital content download sales.

Then what exactly is the DS demo thing on the Nintendo Channel for? Developers had a voice with the 3DS development, so demos HAD to be mentioned more then once.

I wasn't aware of that.  That makes it slightly more excusable.

We should all also be aware that the DSi/Wii do not have the same horsepower the 3DS will have. Yet in Wii's case, I don't why an update for the Wii Shop Channel to have the same layout of the Nintendo Channel isn't possible.

Though then again, console power may have to be put into consideration.

But to be fair, I think the Playstation Store is just as bad as the Wii Shop Channel, in slightly different ways. (Taxing my purchases and being really fucking hard to read in 480p? **** you Sony.)

How is that new? It's the same for buying Nintendo Points (at least here in New York, which is why I don't use Amazon as much since I still have to pay sales tax).

Yeah, the damn legislature needs to cut spending. New York has the highest property taxes in the country, our soon to be former Governor David Paterson (he is not running for election) also tried to do stuff like add more fees for soft drinks.

Sales tax on digital downloads is a state-by-state thing; it applies across platforms. If you pay tax on the PSN store, you also pay it on the Wii Shop Channel and Xbox Live. In Colorado, I just started paying sales tax on these shops within the last year.

The PSN store isn't great, but I think it's better than the Wii Shop Channel in many ways. I'd say that none of the digital platform shops is very good, except Steam and Kindle.
