Mega Man Legends 3 to Be Co-developed by the Fans
« on: October 10, 2010, 02:50:49 PM »

The Developer Room website is now open so fans can help shape the upcoming 3DS title.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/24246

The Mega Man Legends 3 Project is Capcom's attempt to involve the fans in the development of Mega Man Legends 3, which is coming to the 3DS. The newly unveiled Developer Room shows the beginning of this effort.

Currently, fans can vote on their favorite heroine design. There are nine different options, each created by a different Japanese artist, including one from Mega Man's creator Keiji Inafune. The voting will last until October 25, and fans can also discuss the topic in their forums.

Additionally, Capcom is looking for candidates for the position of Mega Man Developer Room Community Liason. This temporary job in Capcom's San Mateo, Calif. campus is for avid Mega Man fans who can manage both the Japanese and English versions of the Developer Room.

Keep an eye out on the Developer Room website for more information about the Mega Man Legends 3 Project.

Outsourcing the Community Manager position? Well, I guess it's better than Sony's QA testing offer. ;-)

Darn, you need to login to vote. My vote would go to Sensei Haruki Suetsugu.

I don't know if it's a good idea to let fans make major decisions, but as far as this one goes I think I like Hayato Kaji's design best.  It looks like a character who actually works as a Digger in the game's setting, and the helmet reminds me of a metool's.

I thought it was interesting that Inafune's is the worst-ranked design.

Yes, they do.  Still, I think this is a good way to build up a positive buzz, and establish a built-in-audience for the game.

They were probably instructed to keep it in a style that matches the existing characters.

I don't think this is the best idea.  For every fan that has good ideas there are 100 that have stupid ones.  Seriously when people speculate about what they want in a sequel you get some of the most outrageous stupid ideas.  You get the fan that just wants everything from the previous games down to the same bosses, levels and power-ups.  You get the get the guy who is all story and never for a second thinks about how his fan fiction could work in a game.  You get the guy who seems to enjoy the game for entirely different reasons than everyone else and gets hung up on one little detail that no one else cares about ("where are the custom skins?")  And finally you have the guy with no concept of reality who suggests very ambitious unfeasible ideas.

Oh well. If the game scores poorly in the reviews fans will have to accept part of the blame at least.

I don't consider this letting fans co-develop the game. Asking fans to vote for the design they like best for the heroine is minor and something that is not new. Capcom has even done this before, having contests in Japan where they would let fans submit their own designs for Mega Man bosses and Capcom would pick the one they liked most and put it in the next game.
