Metroid Prime Graphics corruption
« on: April 28, 2003, 09:50:41 PM »
I bought a UK Metroid Prime GC pack yesterday, and have already done the rounds searching for info on the game freezing.

I thought i'd just have a quick blast before going to work, and after killing the big baddie after the first save point (it's a big grey blob that crawls down a column, you have to circle straff it shooting it's mouth), the gfx went haywire.  The game was still running, but all the colours went totally corrupt, looking like it was on acid.  The game was then totally unplayable, the corruption was that bad.

Anyone else had this, or has my new gc got to go back? (i played eternal darkness for 2 hours without problems yesterday, so i'm hoping the GC is ok...)

Yes. You should definitely contact Nintendo about that one. Could be that there is something wrong with the 3d hardware in your GC. If the texture ram is somehow damaged or similar so it outputs wrongly on certain amounts of data or effects... well.. you should get the unit replaced. All bugs reported from the US version of Metroid Prime have been ironed out for the PAL release. As far as has been reported the PAL version is bugfree. Software wouldn't do this either. It has to be hardware.

Call those gits at Nintendo!

PIAC, still only 11 hours through the game? I finished it after about 15 or 20 or something.. though with only 77%
I'll get 100% soon though!

My copy has never frozen once.  There must be a bad batch...call Nintendo, they're usually good about replacing items.

I agree with AgentDick. Sometimes games can do that on the PC if you have old/bad graphics drivers. It definitely sounds like a hardware issue.

Well, I just got back from work, played it for an hour and half to see how it was, and it played fine.  No freeze or corruption.  Then, in between saves, I needed to go out for some take away, so paused the game, and when I got back, it had frozen.  It was only on the pause screen!?!?!?

The corruption hasn't occured since.  I've hired super monkey ball, so i'll give that and eternal darkness a whirl tonight and see how they go.  I've got to get this sorted before I pick up Zelda on friday!!!!!

The only time i've seen anything like this before, is on my PC.  I'd overclocked the gpu too much, and it went mad.  That was probably down to heat, and the GC has got about 3 foot clear either side.  And it's brand new so that HSF isn't full of belly fluff.

Thnx for the replies.

OK.  Popped the SMB disc in, it got to the opening screen with the 3 charachters, and as the banana's were about to appear on the boards, it froze.  Restart didn't work, so powered down and back on again.  This time, managed to play through the 10 beginner levels, and got to the bonus level which is a long chequered floor, littered with banana's, and letters that drop down to block your way.

The screen started corrupting, gradually getting worse and worse until it was just a total mess.  I took a photo and video clip of the screen, and bodged up a little web page, so if you want them to see what a screwed up GC looks like, follow the link.

piccy & video

I'm not trying to slate the GC by posting the video, it's just for interest really, 'cos the GC itself is a great little piece of kit (WAY sweeter than my PS2), and Metroid Prime is a quality game.

Yikes. The last time I saw a game that glitched up was on my old NES! Ah, those were the days.
But yeah, your Cube is fried or something. Maybe there's something on the lens...

LMAO!

I've put another one up, unfortunately for SMB as well, this time playing the monkey target game.  I'd had the GC on for about 1 hour or so by this point (the longest it's been on for without incident is about 3 hours).  This one also shows the game freezing with the sound continuing.

The GC is being boxed up in about 2 seconds time, to go back to the shop...  I'm hoping (vainly?) that this will cure my Metroid Prime freezing problem too.

Incidentally, in Eternal Darkness, the disc seems to click.  Sometimes it whirrs, and sometimes it clicks.  Is this normal?

Well it makes a small whirring sound when it's moving the disc and reading it.

Yeah when you hear those clicks its normal.  It usually only happens when the game is loading something very big into the game.

Wow, you got a stinky unit =P
Hope you have no troubles returning it for a new one.

And yeah, it's normal for the GC to click and carry on. I've noticed sometimes in Metroid, it'll make a giant thump noise when loading something big..

I took it back to the shop, and they swapped it for a new pack.  I've played Metroid & SMB for about 6 hours on it without problem
