IMPRESSIONS: Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle

Layton and Luke hit 3D, though it's not too exciting since there isn't much to this demo.

At Nintendo's booth, there are two Professor Layton games. The third one, subtitled the Unwound Future, and a brand new 3DS title that was revealed at their press conference.

Called Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle, the new game looks beautiful in 3D. The excellent art style of the other games in the series translates well, and there is a sense of wonder when you look at the top screen, even if it's just Layton and Luke talking.

In the demo, you could use a magnifying glass to explore an area. You did this by using the stylus on the touch screen. You would notice points of interest, signified by red reticules, and they would reveal a thought by Layton or Luke, or in one case in the demo, a puzzle.

The puzzle, apparently the first in the game, shows a drawing of a robot on the top screen. On the bottom, you have four pieces of the robot (head, body, arms, and legs), and you have to put them into boxes, which dictate the order that they fall on the top screen. You can rotate the pieces to make them fit.

It wasn't the coolest puzzle I've ever seen, but it was neat to see the robot show up on the top screen and pop out of the screen in 3D. The puzzle didn't require 3D, but it was a visual improvement.

The title of the game is tentative, and a release date is unknown. It is very likely that North America won't see this game for a while, especially since there are still several other games in the series that haven't been released on DS here.

What type of stylus was used?  Is it just like the DS styluses or did it look new and made for the 3DS?   There's been a lot of speculation about what the new stylus might have but I haven't heard of anyone using it yet.
