Extra Life #4: Dementium: The Ward
« on: May 19, 2010, 08:30:28 PM »

Extra Life is a weekly column focused on giving games a second chance. Each week, I'll look at one game that I missed. It could be a game that received universal appraisal, or one that seemingly nobody played.

This week's entry is Dementium: The Ward, which was developed by Renegade Kid. It originally came out on DS on October 31, 2007. Dementium II, its sequel, came out at the beginning of May 2010.

There isn't currently a link to Talkback within the special.

I haven't played Dementium, but I did play about an hour of Moon before sending the review copy to someone else. It was extremely smooth and seemed to have an effective atmosphere (no pun intended). However, I didn't like it enough to go pick up my own copy. The main complaint I remember is that the guns didn't feel satisfying to shoot. That's a nebulous criticism, but I don't know how to describe it any better.

I think you must've sent it to me, Jonny, 'cause I reviewed the game. I liked it, too. But I agree about the guns. None of them "felt" very powerful.
This would be my PSN Trophy Card, but I guess I can't post HTML in my Signature. I'm the pixel spaceship, and I have nine Gold trophies.

Thanks for the catch on the Talkback link, Jonny. I'll use the excuse that I graduated college today.

You're a lefty too? I can't stand any FPS on the DS because of it. The face buttons do not compare to an actual D-pad and my thumb gets quickly irritated.

So Dementium, Moon and Prime Hunters are all a no go for me.

Maybe that's why I never liked them either. I've honestly never found it to be that noticeable of a problem, but maybe it's just a little bit off that it makes it unenjoyable.

Being a lefty is rough in this Wii/DS world. Art Style Base 10 is made for right-handers only, and there's a handful of Wii game (No More Heroes comes to mind) that force you to either play the game backwards, or play with the Wii Remote in your right hand instead of your left.

I do enjoy the confused looks I get from people showing off games at events when I move the Wii Remote to my left hand. "No, put it in your righ-" "I'm a lefty." "Oh, ok."

Kinda like the Dualshock d-pad, eh?

I heard the European version of Dementium had some improvements to common issues.

Heh, I'm another left hander who played Dementium. I first tried it at PAX 07 and the DS was in a stand so you didn't have to hold it. The gameplay was much better with both hands fully available.

The game itself was impressive for the DS, but the level design is pretty repetitive. I got to the first big boss battle and Died several times and it sent me back half a level. After a few tries I gave up.

You must have missed the pistol, there is also a shotgun later on.

This was one game that I tried out long after its release, and I didn't get anything out of it.

I find that games of this sort are so tied to the visual experience that I would much rather play one on a console or my PC.
Bless you, my child.
Please turn the power OFF.
