Topic: Metroid: Other M Launches June 27

The next chapter in the Metroid saga hits early this summer.

 Metroid: Other M, the latest entry in the storied franchise, will launch in North America on June 27 2010.        

The game, which is being co-developed by Nintendo and Tecmo's Team Ninja, will focus on Samus' character.   At their Q1 Media Summit, Nintendo said, "When you finish playing this, you're going to feel like you know Samus in a way you've never known her before".    

The game is on display at the Media Summit for the press to sample.  Nintendo World Report will have impressions of this upcoming major release later this evening.

I'm still worried about how the game will end up, the Metroid Prime series set the standard for how console Metroid games should be.

I for one am looking forward to a more story driven Metroid but hopefully it will still be pretty open ended. Really though with the creator of Super Metroid in charge of the game's development I don't have too many worries.

I really liked Fusion so I'm eager to see how this game pans out. I know a forefront narrative isn't what Metroid was about, but maybe the developer will make something worthwhile out of the different direction.

These new screenshots just posted for this game are confusing.  I thought the general consensus was that this is a 2D Metroid with moments that go 3D, but in these screenshots that's really hard to tell in places (that 3D visor shot of the door, for instance).  I'm looking forward to reading the demo impressions that will hopefully sort this out.

The way I see it, the Metroid franchise needs to go new directions just like the Zelda franchise needs to now. The "alone and isolated" story has been done extremely well in the first two Metroid Prime games, Super Metroid, and Metroid: Zero Mission, it is time to go a slightly different path.

Storylines don't matter in Metroid so it doesn't matter if they have been done. The perception of a game is the mental process involved in playing it and Metroid's mental process never involved questions about the story. You can even replace Samus with a dude voiced by Nolan North, have him fight a thinly veiled Hitler while trying to rescue his girlfriend and it'll still feel like Metroid if the mental process remains intact.

I'm honestly not sure what to make of this game now. It is definitely breaking molds, and defying categorization. I applaud that experimentation. Its bold, and its different. Does this mean it's going to be good? That remains to be seen. It might be a huge failure, but even if it fails at least it was bold and experimantative. At the very least, it will be Meme worthy years from now, just like those Zelda CDi games.

Yes and that's why Metroid is good. Metroid on the NES sucked in so many ways with stuff like needing to grind for energy if you don't want to run around with 30 or so many rooms being copypasta except sometimes the exact same looking corridor leads to a dead end and other times it leads to somewhere interesting. Hell, even the vertical climbing felt tedious.

Now honestly, was anybody really anxious to know why the computer reminded Samus of some dude you've never seen before? Was anybody interested in where the plot in Metroid games goes next? I can say I cared more about where I'd go next than where the plot did. My thought process did not include the storyline at any point of the game, it was always about what can I do now, where should I be, how can I get there? I did not look for the baby metroid, I looked for the item I'd need to proceed.

I agree. I also thought it was cool when Samus was getting beat by that statue, but then the metroid comes back and saves her by turning the statue to dust.

But I think KDR was referring to the original Metroid on the NES, not Super Metroid.
