Mario Kart LAN
« on: April 23, 2003, 06:52:37 AM »
I am not looking forward to the LAN feature of Mario Kart.  It is a cool option to have in a game, but that probably means no online feature.

Online, to me, is much better than LAN.  LAN is fun and all, but online lets you play against a braod userbase at any time.  Eight friends are hard to gather, especially during the school year.

This could have been the game that could launch Nintendo's online feature.  But, alas, the cost of setting up online is too much.  This game alone cannot pay off the cost of online.  Still, if Nintendo and a couple other third-parties has more promising multiplayer games lined up after Mario Kart, I do not see the harm in setting up online.  The games could pay off the cost of online and finally gve GCN owners who do not have a Xbox or PS2 the chance to go online.

I doubt we'd be seeing that anytime soon though...

I am in a LAN clan, we have around 12 usually, I can see fights breaking out over this, since we have GCNs, controllers and WILL get the adaport and MK.  Maybe one GCN will have TS2 and two will do MK.

I appologize for my ignorance, but can someone explain to me how this LAN gaming thing works?
Is it basically just connecting two or more Gamecube's over a phone-line? Is it limited to local areas or could you play against someone over a distance?

u basically need a broadband adaptor (modem) for each of ur gamecubes, then u connect each of them through the ethernet cable (plz correct me if i'm wrong, i'm pretty sure i'm not)

but for this Mario Kart game, u'll also need two copies of the game (one for each system), i also think two TVs (each system will be hooked up to a serperate TV)

having 8-player split screen on one TV is useless...heh

and no, u will not be able to play someone over a distance (that would be WAN [wide area network]) unless u get online through gamespy

Lan is a computer based system, which allows you to share a network. LAN = Local Area Network.

Most LAN's are used to sharing the internet, but they have also been used to connect computer to computer without the service cost of a internet.

All you need is a Broadband Adapter per console. Then you get ethernet cables (known as CAT 5 cables or RJ45 cables. You can clerify any mess at the store, when you go to purchase them.) Once that is done, you connect the cables to the adapter.

I'm note sure if the cables connect console to console, or you use a device to connect the consoles such as a Router or HUB. Maybe someone else can help us out with that.

This gamespy sounds interesting...if it supports Mario Kart, I'll definitely be looking into it.

Well I'm not sure how the GC is setup but to direclty connect two computers you would need a crossover CAT5 cable.   While if you hooked up em up through a hub or router, you can use standard CAT5 cables.  Regardless, the price is neglible (only a few bucks difference.)

I really do hope Gamepsy makes use of LAN tunneling software.   If not, I would think some person or another would set one of these up as long as Nintendo doesn't restrict it.

Exactly thats what I did with Halo.....I hooked up my cable modem to my router MAIN IN connection and provided anything else I plugged in with an internet connection (Xbox for Halo GAMESPY style).....

I don't care for online as long as the game has a LAN option cuase there are ways of playing online.

TV's?  Hah!

I hav ea 53" widescreen HDTV, and I can play splitscreen already -- TV, DVD, or whatever on one side, GC on the other.  So I'd just need another GC, set up the TV to have GC 1 on the left, GC 2 on the right, and tada!  8 player split screen, and each person has their own little 8" TV or so

Wouldn't it have been better for the LAN for each player to have his own screen?  That could be a huge marketing ploy for Nintendo's first party screen.

Can someone explain to me what the gamespy internet thing is and how it allows LAN to become online and how do you use the gamespy internet? Thanks.

As I understand it, the xbox LAN games are designed in such a way that they will work on a LAN, but not on the internet (I believe they use a proprietary Layer 3 protocol).  In order to play online you need some type of tunneling software to forward the data across the net.  Gamespy provides this "tunneling" feature.

You might not need Gamespy or other special software to play Gamecube LAN games over the net.  It may just work out of the box (like Phantasy Star Online).  It depends on how they're implemented.  We'll have to wait and see.

It's just wishful thinking, but i'd like it if Nintendo worked with GameSpy and touted their titles as having online play, and not just LAN play. Or at least a snippet in each LAN game's manual on how to play online.

Basically, you trick the gamecubes to think that a GC in, I don't know, Omaha, is a GC right next to the GC you have in your home.  It's just that the LAN cable to connect the two is REALLY LONG.

Gamespy provides software to do just that, using your computer, for other systems.

It's not a perfect system, obviously, but for those who don't have a lot of friends with days of freetime, it's a good way to get some competition.

Gamespy would be very valuable if Nintendo used them for online services.  But I doubt that any time soon.

Meanwhile, I hope you all know Mario Kart will probably use only one television.  Two people share the same mini-screen, since co-op seems to be the theme of the game.  The reason two GCNs are necessary are for eight controllers.

Didn't gamespy already say they were supporting the GC, or planning to?  There was a thread about it a month or 2 ago that had some info on this.   Does anyone remember?

Gamespy did say they were supporting the GCN.  I meant if Nintendo really helped them set up online services for the GCN, as in partial funding, extra programmers, and such.
